I am 43 and rode pro class, mostly locally and retired jus as the 4 strokes hit the seen.
So after a very long lay-off from the sport I found myself a kx144 for 2500.00 It was a good way to get back into things this year. I had oppurtunities to try friends 4 strokes all year but resisted...until I gave in yesterday. I hopped on an 2010 kx 250f. Before I even got it out of neutral and blipped the throttle I had a pretty good idea my 2t days were done! After a few laps my suspicion was confirmed. WOW!!!! Torque all the way through, so easy to ride, which translate to fun which is what its all about for me now.

From what little Ive heard, the KTM 350 sounds like the perfect bike for me. It would be a hard decision between a 250 and 450, so the 350 is appealing as long as it handles well etc. The maintanence, expense of a fixing a blown motor doesn't worry much as I am mechanically inclined and like to do preventitive maintainence. the only thing is, the 9 k or whatever it costs! But what can you do, gotta pay to play.

I don't want to start a 2 vs 4t debate, just my personal experience, the 4t blew my mind!! Gotta have one.

Nobody wants to hear this. Apparently you didn't get the memo 4 strokes are a conspiracy by the OEM's and GW Bush. Bush had Dick Cheney and Halliburton design, then build them and then they whacked whomever got in the way at the AMA. True story, google it.

Same thing happened to me back in 2002. I was a die hard two stroke fan, I remember saying when they stop making two strokes I'll buy a new one a keep it forever! Then I rode a YZ250F, bought that bike about a month later.

A very good story about the perfect bike/rider union.

I can totally understand how he was sold on the 4 stroke while he was still in neutral. 4 strokes do their best work in neutral.

You see, when people start getting older and can't keep up with the bike anymore it feels more comforting to have an engine that performs more like a mobility scooter, without those unpredictable power peaks that can send hip bone fragments clattering to the 4 winds.

Also older riders don't absorb calcium as well, so they sometimes need a supplement to go along with their 4 Stroke and Benny Goodman records.

Perhaps the KTM 4 strokes will be covered under Medicare part b and sold through "The Scooter Store."

For $9,000 maybe they even throw in a prescription for Boneva.

He won't take too bad of a hit if he decides to sell after 1 year since he's in Canada. Year old bikes are going for $6000+ around here.

CRs are 2 strokes, CRFs are four stroke.

Surely you should have known.

Four strokes prolonged my riding career. I was able to race without numb hands because of the vibration frequency. I could continue riding harder and longer because of how easy it was to go fast. My results immediately improved and I enjoyed riding again. The YZ400 made me feel like a kid again........well I could do everything I used to when I was in shape and had good reflexes. Looking back I took the easy way out. Content with working less and going faster. My training quickly became lifting lite beers faster and faster for many reps after the days racing. Practice went from ridng until dark to riding when the mood struck me. I was 35 going no where in the sport and content to ride around in the Vet Expert class and drink my winnings away. I was able to get by with less and that is what I did. At the ripe old age of 45 I threw a leg(which now weighs more than my whole body did at 21) over a 125 and discovered my soul again. I felt alive and wanting to push myself to make it do things that just didn't happen on my 4stroke. There is a drive that came back with riding the smoker again. I'm not content I want to work harder and make myself better. For me the four stroke is an automatic transmission , makes it easy for you to eat and go through drive throughs. While the manual makes things tougher yet rewards you with a spirited ride. Smelling 927 makes it much easier to head out running at 5 am.

welcome back even if it took a 4 stroke to get ya here...LOL... 4 strokes are fun for about a couple of years then you'll be yearning for that thrill that only a 2 smoke delivers....Evil

Yeah there is a reason people are buying 4 strokes, and it's not because that is what the big 4 are pushing. They are bettery bikes, expecially considering the difficulty of the modern track. I wanted so much to be a 2 stroke guy, and still ride an 06 yz125 alot, but the 4 strokes are so much easier to ride. I think the 250 2t is the death of the 2 stroke, because: A: most riders can't ride it hard on the pipe, on a track. Most decent riders can ring a 125 2t on a track without getting out of shape.

I guess its impossible to not start a debate about this issue, in my case when I was a 150 lb 20 year old pro I was in shape and skilled enuf to keep a 125 pinned all the way around the track and I loved it.
There is nothing sweeter than a 125 at full song. Unfortunately I am now 200lbs and rusty as hell, so I am going slow, which is no fun, especially in the sand which I used to love riding. For me I will be able to go faster on a 4t, and fast = more fun and thats all its about for me. and when I am having fun I am more inclined to ride and train harder, and my 2 stroke isn't going anywhere.

As for you Propogayda your and idiot. The 4t will be more dangerous cause I am gonna be hauling the mail on it. they are faster not slower Lets face it 125's are slow, which ironically, is no doubt a perfect match for you cause you don't have the balls to hang it out on a 350 or 450.
10/3/2010 8:34pm
I don't think one is faster or slower. More of one can acheive race speed easier on one than the other. If the playing field was even cc wise I think the last decade would have panned out much differently. If a guy trained hard and was in shape the Service Honda 500 would be bike of choice rip the holeshot and never look back. If you were fit enough to hang for the mini motos we are stuck riding these days get out front get wide and drag race to each corner game over.......

I think that the loss of the 125 class is the worst thing to ever happen to MX. 125 were the gateway drug to this sport. I know when I ride a 125 I feel like a kid again. They are pure fun tiring as hell no mistakes allowed but none the less pure fun. I would never spend 6 to 8 grand on a pitbike but I gladly have spent more than that building 125's purely for fun.

So your comparing a 10yr-old kx with a brand-new kxf? I would hope you would like the suspension better! I have a different experience. I ride an '06 yz125, and recently rode an '04 crf450. You guessed it, just 2 years and the yz has way better suspension. Yeah, I could go slow on the 4art-stroke, pin it on a jump face and clear whatever was there. But I promptly got off the fat pig because, like you say, a 2-stroke at full sing is pure beauty. But unlike you, I am only 41, and still in shape, for 41 that is. Sure I have to try way harder to go fast, but the 'fun' of passing all these 43 yr-olds with 4art machines is better than 'going fast' when the corner is over, and in a lazy-ass way. JMO

After nearly 8 years of riding i finaly road a 125 2 stroke today, at over 90Kg it was never going to be a great idea! Now have greater respect to people that can ride a 125 towey flat out, getting the thing in the meat of power is a work of art, holding it in the sweet spot is just genius, i couldnt work it out lol

First bike was a 250 towey, at least they can be ridden by average joe as they have a bigger power range than the 125, but neither compare to a four stroke, anyone can ride a fourstroke, power every where and you dont have to work for.

Well actually you still do on a 250F, but still a heck of a lot easier to ride than a 125.

Was lucky today, my CRF450 is out of action for a couple more days, so rode 4 different bikes today, all a massive contrast from each other.

2010 CRF250, great bike but after riding a 450 for two years, it took a bit of time to realise i had to change gears again hehe. great bike though.

2010 YZ450F, again great bike easy to ride, plenty of power and handle well.

2007 CRFX450, with full lights kit and number plate on it! around a MX track it was still great fun, did wear me out a little quicker, but really is just a MXer with lights.

Then the 05YZ125, IT was fun although i sucked on it, really is such a small window of power on these things, though gettting through a loamy corner right in the meat of the power did leave a big smile on my face.

For average joe like myself though, the Fourstrokes are easier to ride and a lot more enjoyable and can be ridden all day. I just pray every day mine does not go bang because that would be the end of riding for awhile.
