Regarding your last line, the only reason a rider qualifies through the LCQ is because they didn't get it done in the heats. So we give them a second chance (semis), with pared-down competition, then a third chance with competition pared even further. If a rider crashes or his bike fails, the LCQ says he's deserving of a second chance...
