Nice bike Sofiedog. Forgot to mention that when saw the picture of the base valves at the beginning of this link I wanted to find a used of the CR forks so I could use these valves when I modified my XR650L forks. Too much $$$ even on ebay so I machined my own gold valves and it took 2-3 attempts to get the shims right for me. The compression holes on the stock XRL base valves were only about the size of a wooden pencil lead and wouldn't pass much oil. That is why the stock forks rattled my...

Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge...I just rebuilt this '88...forks are stock and work pretty well for me with Honda HP 5wt oil...not, the recommended Honda ATF. I look forward to doing some of the tuning mods you guys are using to get the most out of these old school forks.

It says the Moose Racing Hardparts 0450-0269 fork seal and bushing kit is compatible with the '83 CR250...I think I'll order the kit and try them.

What are the bushings made of? Can you buy 4 of the ones that are too short, then split the difference and have a machine shop cut them, so you can stack the two in the fork on each side, so they are the proper height?

The powerband on my 79 YZ250 is a little peaky also. I did read that Yamaha lowered the ports in 79 to try and smooth it out, but it still comes on suddenly at about 3000-3500 RPM.

the '78 YZ250E has a peaky but fun power band in stock trim...I'm running the stock Mikuni carb with stock pipe and silencer....stock forks and shock...a trip back to 1978.

Well done! If I remember correctly the 88-89”s came with very rich jetting from factory, thinking you will end up in the 175 main range with pump gas, FmF & Pro Circuit still have jetting charts to these old bikes on their sites I believe. Not sure if you already checked but, on some models the spark plug did not thread deep enough into the combustion chamber & caused jetting issues.

I got her out a bit...just rode her around in a practice area. I'm going to start leaning out the main. Plug is black and wet...spooge around pipe...it has 30 min run time. I installed the stock 185 main in the stock 38mm PJ carb to start off...going to drop to #180. I'm running 32:1 SuperM and 91 Octane pump...
