Only real solution I’ve found is following a two rules. Quality vented decal, and draining all the gas from the tank when done for the day. My 78’ YZ400 build was completed in May 2018, and the decal has not had an issue yet. Back in 1977 and 78 my YZ factory decals were usually gone in the first 30 days.

10/29/2019 7:09am Thanks for the thorough reply. I drilled out the sides of the air box back in 1981, so that’s a done deal. I rebuilt this carb with new stock jets and set the float level, as well. The day I was riding was cooler than it has been, so maybe it’s running lean in the mid range. I’ll play around...

10/28/2019 6:56am Haven’t messed with it since the post, but from the reading I’ve done, I think starting with the air mixture screw would be good. I hope to get it out, soon, so I can ride it to get I warmed up and then do the adjustments.

10/7/2019 2:52pm Personally, I’d replace wheel bearings, clutch plates, fork seals and shims, swing arm pivot bearings, steering head bearings, all engine seals and what bearings in the cases, or crank that don’t meet spec. Also, check your cylinder and if still in tolerance, ball hone and install a new piston, rings and connecting rod bearing, etc. I did my 81 YZ125...

7/27/2019 9:54am Yes, the shift pawl and spring are the first thing I checked. I’m in the middle of the tear down now. I think it’s a shift fork that’s bent. Will know soon. Thanks!
