I imagine the first few years of running a national could be a loss or break even at best situation. Lots of infrastructure work needs to be done. Parking, traffic control, fencing, hospitality, line of sight for cameras and now even things like assuring clear flight paths for drones (Washougal had to do a bunch for this) all adds costs. At one point one of them says “You know if you don’t make it through here, you can still show up to the regional and try”. The way guys used to run over track markers riding the edge of the track and deegan completely avoiding an off camber section and using the edge of the track as a berm to make up 5 bike lengths are not the same. Its not even so much about the track markers as it is avoiding a part of the track to make up a bunch of time. Nobody would have cared if it wasnt such a blatant unfair advantage no one else had.
