Another vote for Yamaha. I raced and won in the +30 B class on several different YZ125s. Those things are bulletproof and fast enough to get the job done.

It hits a little harder in the midrange due to a couple of more HP's there compared to a 125 there. But not as hard that i would say that it is a problem. People should keep in mind that the sx150 is a purpose built 150 with exhaust, porting, stroke and ignition built for it. you get "stock bike" hours out of the piston etc and that nice stock bike powerband. My latest build is a Honda cr144 -07 built for race gas, custom mapped ignition, different exhausts tested etc on the dyno. It puts out more power and...

Someone mentioned above that if you can budget for a '21, then you can get a '22. Good point. But if you can't quite find one in your price range, I still think that prior-gen is just as good. As mentioned, I now have a different seat that is slightly taller/flatter. My only ergo complaint is how the rad shrouds poke out at the tip. But even that is very minor. I personally don't think the '22+ is perfect either. To me it feels too tall and like you sit too much above it. Just like how ppl rave about...

Yeah I moved up from a cr85 and the thing blew my mind with how fast it was, the engine can still hold its own for sure but like you say the rest of it not so good. What a beauty though.

4/17/2026 10:11pm From my understanding, I would need '22 airbox, sub frame, fuel tank, along with the seat to fully convert it. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought it was more than just plastic pieces.

144 kits are pretty cheap and by far the best bang for your buck mod you can make to any 125. Don’t let reliability be a concern either. I found my 144 top ends actually lasted much longer than the stock 125. Probably because I wasn’t wringing it out as often. Seems like such a minor bump in displacement wouldn’t make a difference, the butt dyno will surprise you though.

Have a 2019 SX 36 hrs Has vital jetting vented side plate. Bike rips, still has original plastics. 4 sale in so cal if you want to road trip it. LMK
