Talking Politics on Vital was one that I had to quit cold turkey recently.  I had to stop because I guess there were enough people that  lacked enough self control to not click thread, that hurt their feelings enough they felt the need to complain . I don't really miss it ,but  every so often I see something happen and I think about what could have been.......

But seriously,  MTB'ing is the hobby that I was the deepest into that did not turn into a job that I stopped doing . Painting helmets is another , but that had turned int oa job and that business is still going now , just taken a little different direction.    Many moons ago I was riding my MTB 100's of miles every week. And a handful of friends and I would ride together  we all had MX bikes as kids . A few raced and did decent.  And then when we all started working full time and having more money to play with  we all started to ride dirtbikes again and then I got into racing MX. I did ride my MTB to train ,but none of my friends that I rode with were riding their MTB's anymore. I kept mine so I could go on rides with my Dad . Even in his 60's he was somehow in good enough shape that he was able to hang with the quickest riders of the group. But I rode less and less on the MTB.  And got more and more into racing MX, then got hurt a few times before getting injured bad enough that it took close to 11 years and multiple surgeries to "fix".

After healing I was focused on growing the business I started while injured and then My parents needed me because of some health issues. During that time lots of people I met racing MX had started to get into MTB's and I started to read about them and ended up buying a Canyon EMTB that I am slowly getting back into riding more again. I missed MTB's so much, many memories  riding with my Dad, racing, and I never felt as comfortable riding a MX bike as I did on a MTB.  I'm hoping to get that comfort level back on the MTB and then start riding mt dirtbike more again if I can stay healthy.

And I've also recently found myself wanting to get back into painting some helmets again. But I need to setup an area I can paint before I can do that. Its in the works though.  I just want to do my own and see how it feels . See if its as fun as I remember  and see how the new paints are to work with. I had stopped right around the big shift towards more water based stuff. I hated how that stuff sprayed I hope its better now or that I can still find solvent based paints..

Gotta admit, it’s a welcome change not having politics anymore. Seeing everyone laughing and, getting along has been good for non-moto.

Surfing. Used to be daily, good, bad, flat, big, whatever. Get up, go surf. Then go about your day. Then came marriage, kids, injuries, more injuries, and life in general. That am time frame got harder and harder to justify. Then when I did surf I wasn't happy because I hadn't surfed in so long I was a kook again. Not right away, but like a slow fade into kookville.  Nothing better than paddling out into the lineup, out jockeying all the little future world champ rippers into position, turning around to takeoff and getting pitched over the falls like a goober because your hip gives out, or your knee won't bend far enough. Then you can get to where you only want to surf when it's good. That doesn't work either. To surf good enough to surf good waves good, you have to surf all the time. Once in awhile doesn't cut it, especially past 40 and into your 50's. In my 50's I figured out surfing long board and point waves are fun, but I like hollow high intensity barrels, and there was no way I could surf those. That's when I got more into bodysurfing and boogie boarding. Most people aren't interested in hollow semi closed out beach breaks, so the crowd wasn't an issue. I get a lot more "Yuck for my buck" getting rolled in the shorebreak 🤪

Surfing was one of my main sports from 10 to 25. When I could swim to the end of the pier and back my dad let me get a board. Some of my most memorable days were down in your neck of the woods at Trestles. I wasn’t the best in the lineup, but I was one of the best at getting out. 20 foot faces and nobody to talk to out there 😆. Once I got my first Ski boat , sitting and waiting for waves, and the slow speed associated with many of those waves made it less intriguing for me. Got into it a little when my daughters were teenagers, and I am sure that their daughters will be learning to surf when the time comes. They like wake surfing with mommy. That will get Papa back out there for sure.

Surfing was one I forgot to add. Same age range. I was more Huntington Cliffs and Bolsa. I did find out that you really cant lay off for 6 months and jump back in and paddle out in big swells. Arm pump only shoulders and biceps.

Keep this up and you’ll have to clip yourself 🤣. When we getting options other than the thumbs. Gets awkward when people post sad news or something that requires something other than an up or down. Does it cost more to have more options ?

I'm not a terribly strong swimmer and it really showed while trying to learn the past two days. Just paddling into waves was so much tougher than I expected. I can't maintain much power for very long between paddling out and trying to catch waves.

The "paddling out" is probably the healthiest and most "muscle building" part of surfing...it's SOOOO good for your upper body strength and core.

Stoked that you're "getting out there"!

Truly stoked to hear this!

I grew up being into ALL THINGS board-sports and add skiing to that, too. I was into all of it...from Santa Cruz to Tahoe...but, Moto took priority & I got older and started companies and a family and let it take a back seat...and my shitty knees made it easy to not want to get out there much...

But, new knees and a very tuned up ankle means...taking on snow season, again.

STOKED.

Playing guitar! Started playing on my 30th birthday…I love music & guitar but no musical skills or training it was a long painful process to get some basic chords and rhythm going, but I kept at it…I played with friends whom were much better than me, it helped me progress…used to play often whenever I had some down time…I was making really good progress, even had a small list of songs I could play & sing….then 1 of my main mentors/ friends that I used to play with,  passed away of a drug overdose…. I just stopped playing as much, I bring my guitar with me but still have not had the passion to put the time in….I will be sitting in a hotel room tonight, my guitar is in my van…I will play it tonight if it kills me…or the people in the room adjacent to mine😂

I haven’t touched drums since I was a kid. I picked it back up after over 35 years. I’m terrible. My neighbors hate me. It’s so much fun

Found another tune that's great for gettin' goin'...

Aerosmith - What It Takes

There goes my old girlfriend
There's another diamond ring
And all those late night promises?
I guess they don't mean a thing
So, baby, what's the story?
Did you find another man?
Is it easy to sleep in the bed that we made?
When you don't look back
I guess the feelings start to fade away

Racquetball

Dang I love that game.

Had a private court where my mom worked when I was in my late teens.

Then started going to a club and playing in a league.

Started traveling to work, got old, got fat.

Would still try and at least just go hit the ball around and practice my kills.

Knees got bad.

replaced them.

Shoulders are gone now and even if I had them replaced sounds like I am done.

Oh, and moto...... keep promising myself I am going to get my 1994 yz 250 out and lay out some grass track in one of our fields, horses be damned.

I do like how everybody is getting along better.  I  hate how divisive politics are, and I hate what it can do to people who normally get along great and thing positively of each other.

Thank you for doing what you do and congrats on getting married!

If you don't like the down votes then get rid of them or make them public. I thought you were suppose to be in charge. every six months or so you come in puffing your chest how now you are going to enforce the rules YOU have in place then you disappear for another six months and when you get called out then you make excuses. From now on I will make a big thumbs down but I will quote your post but im sure that will hurt your feeling too. I am sure you will ban me and that's fine But you asked.

Snowboarding, did 3 winters working in the Canadian rockies and if I never saw a snowboard or set of skis again i wouldn’t be bothered at all.

Also motocross, did it for 20 years and recently rode again after 3 years off and it did absolutely nothing for me. Ill probably just stick to tarmac.

Once you learn how to duck dive and go under the wave before it hits you , getting out becomes way easier. When you pop out the backside in the correct angle, you just start scrapping as hard as you can and then repeat until you get out. Of course, this is a short board suggestion. Tough to dive a long board. Have fun surfing, Michael. Once you get good at it and comfortable out there, your Moto instincts will take over and there won’t be waves that scare you. Damn , this makes me want to get out there again.

Hockey cards. Have a lot 50+ years old. Still have them but haven't looked at them for years now. I really should go digging for my Gretzky RC though.

Also sleds, as others. Still involved at the club level but haven't been on one the past 2 winters now.

This season of F1 has been rough for me to view...

The product has gone to shit , trying to appeal to the whole planet and fuck the loyal fans.

My daughter works the Silverstone event, but only goes on the friday , to set up and lets her crew have the race days, but will pay to go to Spa because it still feels like a proper race, not a sideshow.

As i already said , i stopped watching when it got political, and the prime culprit was on his high horse again, just this week.

Controversial take, he only got where he is and stayed , because  he always had better cars.  I love that he has had his ass handed to him on a plate by kids.

The guys i know at Red Bull who i worked with are over the whole thing now, just waiting for a time to get out.  The spirit of the sport has been destroyed, and MotoGP will be going the same way.

I live 35 mins from Silverstone, and would have climbed the fences as a kid, now it cant be free enough to deal with the traffic.

I Have had MXGP, MXoN , WEC,F1 , WSB , and MotoGP within 45 mins of where i live for as long as they have run, and all of them have lost their way from where they were in the 90's.

Once you get used to not watching, the time you get back is hard to give up.

Flying , racking up hours looking towards IFR , Twin Engine....$$$

Don't be so dramatic as Its only been the last week or so and I didnt know that down votes hurt your little feeling there pumpkin. I get the same down votes on all my posts but I just dont care and I didnt know you were so sensitive.

Yeah. It sounded a lot like the pot calling the kettle black.

I have retired from College Football beginning with the 2026 season.

As an alumni member, for many years we poured 10's of thousands of dollars into a major program each year and dedicated our fall months to it. We hosted huge catered tailgates with as many as 100 people there. I knew every player and every recruit's story and progression through their career. I supported and cheered for the kids that were at my school because they loved the school and culture there, just like I did. Our money went toward making better facilities and supporting the culture of building great young men to be better leaders, husbands and fathers.

NIL and the transfer portal has killed all of that and turned Saturdays into just another Pro Football day. Now there is no loyalty from the players to the schools and brands and private equity are the funding agents.

So not only am I not attending or supporting, I am not watching.

Clicked on to see what everyone had past interests in and watched a potential suicide.  I think I’ll switch over to the Talladega race and wait for the big one. 😂

I think he's the same dipshitiot who launched into a tirade in last year's F1 thread over something I said.

My daughter played the clarinet for a few years.

Funny how you went on your little tirade but, failed to answer a simple question from your high horse.

Haha, he seems lost, boy. A two paragraph reply to a simple question, without answering the simple question....Feels very, political.

For me it's moto. It ebbs and flows. I've always kept a bike but I get burned out, injured, or life gets busy and I am out of it for a while. Currently got the bug again and have been riding more.

Just got back from Perris. Dirt was great this AM. Track is pretty tight and busy but it is fun once you find your flow.

Cat juggling. Please don’t judge me. We would do it down in Mexico in the 80s. It’s just gratifying in a very weird way. No cats were truly harmed, but we all realize the error of our ways now.  I feel safe sharing this with you guys. Who amongst us  hasn’t juggled cats for gosh sakes?
