New Freeride arrived today. I’ve had a 2022 and loved it. This new one has a better battery with 5.5 KWh instead of the 3.9 KWh in prior models. It also charges with 120 volts so that’s handy, especially when camping and a generator.
Out of interest, what made you go with KTM again? Seems like there are a few options with better performance on the market. I guess road legal narrows those options down though
Curious, you must like them. Never really saw one. Range?
I’m picking up mine tomorrow. I went with a Ktm because I know Ktm is a quality build with brakes, wheels, suspension, etc vs the Chinese ones I’ve seen and ridden I know would just fall apart on me. It’s also street legal. In my eyes it’s a replacement for a xr250r. I’ll hop on it with minimal gear and go ride for an hour. Explore areas I wouldn’t go on gas. 10k is more then the Chinese stuff, less then a stark, and a stark I feel as though I would need full gear every time I got on it. I can’t wait to get it I haven’t been this excited about a dirtbike in a long time.
Did you drop the forks in the triples? Seems really low in the front.

I think it’s an optical illusion with the slant separate the black and orange and the shape of the plastics.
Was thinking that but zoom in on the upper tube. Also, seeing the older ones around here they all seem to stink bug a bit, which is weird, like they put 80cc forks on it.
I have really liked the quality of KTM’s and have great dealer support from KTM of North Texas. I feel the KTM has a “real dirtbike” feel as compared to some of the bicycle types.

As you can see in the pic, I beat every e-bike except the Starks at Biltwell this year. And, I’m 72 years old. 😎
The 2022 got about 25 miles of trail riding, The 2027 should get about 40 miles. We shall see.
Just to add to discussion about miles. I got a 701. Other day I went riding for 3 1/2 hrs. Stopped a few times for sights and liquids. 37 miles. I can do 120+ with tank full. You either want more or simply don't need more. A goldwing can do a certain amount of miles, but not more. Battery range is improving. Fuel will keep getting more expensive. Just things to think about.
NICE!
I'm surprised that npne of the Japanese brands have tried making their own mid sized electrics. The Surron sized market seems so big. I see a lot of aftermarket companies offering so many things for surron and talaria , and some of the others. I'm surprized that KTM has not been more popular. People spend crazy money on their Surrons and Talaria's so I don't think cost is the only factor that has made them not sell as well.
If they are similar to an XR250, that sounds like a super fun play bike to get out and explore on. Really makes me think about getting one! I used to scout riding spots on my MTB. Now I'm old and fat, so a near silent bike that is street legal would be a great bike for exploring. Strapping onto the back of my RV to have as a back up vehicle.
I've been thinking of building my own electric, I have a current generation RMZ that runs and has not problems. But I never ride it and think I would enjoy it more if it was electric. After riding a Stark Varg for 20 or so minutes I found out that I LOVE electric power and how I was able to put my feet where I wanted them instead of putting them so I could use the brakes and shift. So I was thinking of swapping the RMZ since I also like to make stuff myself. But maybe I'll look for a blown up CRF250/450X model that has a street title, or similar bike that has already been on the road legally and swap that to electric and have my own bike to explore with. I lived in the same town for the first 40 years of my life and knew all the local spots to trail ride. I moved and have property that I've made my own trails and track on now. But other than that I have no idea what local places are around. I've found areas that I see people have ridden at while looking on google earth. But its hard to know much from those images.
Congrats to the OP on the fresh bike, and hope you get out to ride it a ton! The comparison to an XR250 changed my perspective on the KTM freeride. It makes sense , but just seeing somebody else say it made me see it as more of a fun bike. As a teenager my friends and I had so many fun times with XR250's XL250's even XR200's.
How pricey are additional batteries so you could swap out while the other charges?
Charge time is about 8h. KTM has been talking about a faster charger forever but it's not available yet. Extra battery is not available either. No pricing on any of these 2 parts but previous gen battery was about 4k...
These seem ideal for those that live near a forest. Premium Singletrack, Stealth Impact.
I like the entire electric bike concept...but holy crap...that is one frigging horrible looking bike. The plastics make from the forks back look like a road runner. Just odd looking.
I think it’s sick, glad you found a bike that suits you! You got 8 years out of the last one? How many hours on it you figure? How much maintenance did it need?
I’ve often wondered why ktm doesn’t market this bike more aggressively or do I live under a rock?
So you raced this thing hard for over 3 hours?
Great job btw
Pit Row
We just got a handful of these at work. I rode one in the parking lot on map 3. It's surprisingly peppy for only being rated at 25.75hp and 27.73 ft-lbs. Compared to the Supermoto Stark that I recently rode, it won't take your breath away. However, it'd be a really fun around town commuter or trail bike for a less aggressive person. If I'm buying an electric dirt bike though, the $3,000 more for the Stark is more than worth it.
It’s really fun to ride in the desert. But the e-bike race is only one 25 mile lap so only a little over an hour.
Awesome. Was the race near Arlington? How much battery life did you have left?
My 2022 had about 76 hours on it, 1,200 miles. I never had any maintenance needs. It was totally bullet proof.
I would wash it and hit the chain with WD-40 and think to myself, “Isn’t there something I need to work on?”
Another thing I really like about the e-bike is how easy it is to ride on the balls of your feet and maintain good body position. No shifter or foot brake to reach for.
The Biltwell is across the Mojave Desert near Ridgecrest, CA. I had about 30% of my battery charge left at the finish. But, that was on the 2022 e-Freeride with 3.9 KwH.
The new 2027 e-Freeride I picked up today has a 5.5 KwH battery. It should go well over 40 miles.
Here are photos of the bike now that I have it home.
My cameras broken, otherwise I’d take some pictures of my freeride out in the wild. I took it for its first real ride today. It’s a really nice bike. Completely different than gas. I went for a few miles and went from 85% to 78%. Battery should last a few rides for what I’m using it for (quick less then 10 mile rides around my property/ neighbors.) I like having both brakes on bars and not shifting. It feels like a mountain bike almost. When you screw up you feel the weight though. I did some technical hills, and it’s all about throttle control on an electric bike. If you just twist it like a gas bike it spins tires. For 10,000 I wasn’t skeptical but after taking it for a real ride this bike is a good bike to have in the fleet.
