A Craigslist/Marketplace ‘deal’, a particular burger/food item, a vehicle that looked a whole lot better in the pictures, or something else…..
What were you chasing, how far did you go, and did you come home happy or just too invested to admit it was a bad idea? 😉
Honest question bud.
Do you sit around each night doing bong rips and asking AI for obtuse thread topics because yer getting out of hand lately?
“Ever driven too far for something that wasn’t worth it?” didn’t seem like a particularly difficult question, bud. But you came all the way into this thread and left disappointed, so I guess that counts. 😉
Have a better night!!!
I arrived in Tampa from South Africa and was handed keys to a Monaco Diplomat motor home. I left Tampa on a Tuesday evening and arrived at the Hangtown track on Friday evening at 21h00. That was a long drive all by myself.
It rained on Saturday, and Barcia took my rider out of the race in the 1st moto..
Everything was covered in mud and a trashed race bike.
2 hours the wrong direction trying to get hay during a drought.
Shit looked like someone bailed the shit the highway guys cut from bar ditches. They wanted $120.00/bale.
4 hours pulling an empty trailer.
The Shop
DeCal Works Huge Plastic Inventory of UFO and Polisport kits.
Luxon 4-Post Bar Mounts
$189.95 - $239.95
I see where people saying that they drove several 100 miles each way to “save $ buying a new dirt bike from a different MC dealer” to save a couple hundred $ and some were even so far that they had to stay at a hotel.
2 days driving back and forth and several fill ups so what did they really save???
During Covid, my family and I were going stir crazy, so we decided to make a road trip. We had no particular destination because most things were closed anyway. My son said something about wanting beef jerky, so I loaded everyone up in the family mobile and we went to Daniel's in Quartzsite, AZ. 3 hours in each direction just for beef jerky. Definitely not worth it, but then again... worth it!
I have driven 8 hours round trip for a MX track that was not worth the haul. I always say some riding is better than no riding, but this was not worth 8 hours and all the fuel.
Drove to Ironman one year for the GNCC from Warren., OH and camped overnight Saturday. Got sick as a dog overnight, and Between that and 26 degree temps I barely slept. Was puking and feeling horrible so I packed up my tent and went home. Never even unloaded the bike. Definitely not worth it....
My 90 year old grandfather lent a rickety old single axel 6X5 trailer (with 12 inch wheels) out to a friend who was driving from Utah to Michigan...they got as far as Laramie WY and the wheels came off (well, 1 wheel literally came off). As much as we tried to convince grandpa to just leave in Laramie and forget about it...he absolutely insisted on going to get it, and was going to go by himself...so I was nominated to drive him to Laramie to get it...8 hours one way...That headwind eastbound on I80 across Wyoming was brutal...the trailer was an absolute pile...totally not worth the trip. It's still sitting on the side of his house exactly where I left it (still missing a wheel)...he's 96 years old now. (still driving himself, still goes fishing a few times a week...but stubborn as a mule).
yep.
One winter I wanted to get a race in so i drove 6 hours one way across Washington to Greys Harbor AX. Stupid tired from getting up at 2am, I raced 2 classes and maybe burned a 1/4 tank of gas in my bike. I think they were 6 or 7 lap motos on a 25 second track! It was indoors but outside it was grey, damp and cold.
Was it colder inside than outside? I swear that back during the older Monroe AX days it was 10-20 degrees colder in the arena. They ran the fans non-stop to keep the exhaust from overpowering everyone, and it felt like wherever you happened to be in the building had a 10-20 mph breeze at all times!
We didn’t make the entire trip just for this, but it definitely took time we could have been doing something better!
During our cruise at the end of June with my wife’s twin sister and her husband, they were adamant that we had to go to to Puka Dog for one of their wrapped hotdog type thing. Not impressed. I would have rather had a frozen corn dog made in the oven than one of those!
I think they got offended when I didn’t finish mine, but I was able to blame it on the tirzepatide……
They are the type of people who either have the ‘best meal ever’ or ‘worst meal ever’ every day.
A couple years ago I was supposed to fly home from DC to Mississippi. There was a huge hack/data breach that shut down Dulles. I knew it was going to be bad, so I ran to the bus to get to the rental car lot. Had to go to 3 different vendors before one of them would let me take a car 1-way to Mississippi because everyone had the same idea. 2 days of driving in a brand new Subaru Crosstrek, and I was home. BTW, the Subaru was a slow POS, I felt like a lesbian, but I had free satellite radio, so it did the job.
Definitely not worth the trip.
Drove from CA to UT for a multiday dual sport ride. Found out midway through day one that the starter button was an intermittantly operating function. After using up all the repair options we could come up with in the motel parking lot, it was decided to head the 100 miles back tobthe truck and go back to CA.
Lucas starter button?
Wife and I drove about an hour one way to look at a car. The dealers internet people made it look amazing. In reality it was far from it lol
Looked at a few other cars on the lot and left. Didn't even talk to anyone
Last year drove two hours to go riding at Dyracuse off-road park. Turns out it was closed that day for a “members only” ride (and I am not a member).
Drinking age was 18 in Wisconsin, sooo 60 miles up to the border !
( Sadly many couldn't handle it and after many Horrible situations
MADD " Mother's against Drunk Drivers " went after this disaster and soon enough the Drinking age was 21 Nation Wide.
Pit Row
When I was in college the drinking age in WA was 21, but it was 19 in Idaho. The 8 mile stretch between Pullman WA (WSU) and Moscow ID was like a turkey shoot for officers 7 nights a week, even worse on weekends.
ID adopted a 21 drinking age right after I turned 21, but anyone who was legal to drink the day before the change was grandfathered in for the next 2 years.
Your grandpa is my new hero, that's an awesome story.
Buffalo Park , Ottawa Illinois back in the day a wooden sign propped up on the locked gate " No staff today "
You learned to call the gun range and ask them before the drive
As I look back on it...the trip for the trailer wasn't worth it...but 16 hours in the truck with my grandpa will be a memory I'll treasure forever...and that was worth it...so maybe my story doesn't fit in this thread?
lol
Drove 4.5 hours each way to but a Boat (29' Baja Outlaw SST)
I got there to see this "Mint Condition, pictures don't do it justice" boat, and the "Original Paint" was actually a wrap and not paint at all. The power steering didn't work, 3 or 4 of the switches on the dash didn't work, the bilge pump worked but wasn't hooked up to the outlet hose so it was pumping the water right back into the boat. The cabin vent hatches were siliconed in place so they couldn't be opened, and that's just off the top of my head that I can remember. The boat was a project to say the lease so I passed on it and drove home empty handed.
I drove 10 hours to Buds Creek to bring a rider to race the national. When we got there he told me he had a broken collarbone but was still going to try to ride. He went out and was just scrubbing Henry hill every lap and rolling around the rest of the track. He told me after practice that he wasn't going to try to ride again and that he just wanted to go so he could have me take some photos of him scrubbing Henry Hill. They were some sick scrubs and I have a poster hanging in my toy hauler. Mostly so I can share the story of how that photo was to taken.
We stuck around and watched the moto's. It was super hot and humid and as I was going back to my Toy Hauler I saw Paul Buckley walking to his rental car and he was dripping sweat. I asked him if he wanted to come back to my toy hauler and cool off and have a cold drink before he left. When we got to the toy hauler I opened the door and smoke poured out....... The rider had been inside smoking weed and it was like a movie how much smoke there was. Paul decided that he was gonna just head to his rental car after that.
His Dad drove a small 4 cylinder Toyota pickup and he felt bad that I drove all that way for his kid to be hurt. So he gave me some gas money. I thanked him and then headed back home, another 45 minute drive. Stopped to fuel up and saw that he had given me $40 . I think I had spent around $800 or so on fuel for the weekend.
It wasn’t worth it. In fact, it’s affectionately known as “my last Chevy”.
The trip was a blast. Picked up the truck from a friend’s family dealership…drove to Albertsville MN for a few days. Drove to Millville for the National…& had a great time.
Then drove it home thru Iowa, Nebraska…plenty of corn-field dirt roads…county gravel roads…even made my way thru the fun stuff of Utah…
But, it wasn’t worth it…the truck…that is. 😎
It ain’t a Raptor. 🤣
wow, I am the first one to tell a tale involving a woman?
About 30 years ago I had just gone through a divorce.
The internet was fairly new and I started talking to women I meant online.
This included one from Boston that I had a good number of conversations with.
I had to drive from where I lived near Charlotte up to Wildwood, New Jersey to meet with the promoters of the thunder on the beach motocross race about building their track on the beach the following season.
While I was there, I decided I would just run up to Boston and surprise this woman.
I knew she worked at the administration office on the UMass campus so I found it and upon walking in I saw her nameplate at one of the windows. I waited behind several people until it was my turn. I walked up to the window and she recognized me about the same instant I noticed something about her.
Now, I like to think I am not a shallow person and have no problem with a few extra pounds. She had misrepresented the truth by about 100 pounds.
It was close to her quitting time and I agreed to wait outside for her to go get dinner.
On the way I discovered that the reputation Boston has of having the worst drivers in the country is well earned. A taxi ran a red light and clipped my tailgate. It was down and they stripped a chrome strip of the top edge and left a deep scratch. They never even slowed down.
We went to a seafood restaurant. The conversation was like the food and service, slow, stale and of little substance.
I took her back to her car at umass and headed out of town until I found a motel 6.
The next morning I got up and drove.
edit:
Memory is not what it once was.
I actually went from Boston to upstate New York. My Maternal Grandparents lived about an hour southwest of Albany in Fort Plain, and my Paternal grandmother lived near Cornell in Dryden. I spent a day with each. It was the final time I would see them before they passed. So not a completely wasted trip.
I had even more driving time to contemplate having any future prospects send me a picture with a current newspaper like a proof-of-life picture in a kidnapping.
^ *Proof of fitness. 😄
I went all the way to China to get a new liver. I heard they were plentiful and that you could even schedule a transplant. Not sure how that is possible but whatever....
To make a long story short there were some protests and the liver I was supposed to get, from what they told me, was damaged somehow.
Drove 2,5 hours each way to see Nirvana. They sucked. More specifically Cobain sucked. Def not worth it.
Okay, I’m LOL’ing! That’s gotta be from a movie, right? If not, still hilarious.
Post a reply to: What’s the furthest you’ve driven for something that probably wasn’t worth the trip?
