So why is this country left to clean up industries mess

Once an industry finds a location no longer profitable, they leave. The pit, the empty buildings, the waste, the empty towns are no longer needed. Companies chase profits. The government allows limited restoration. Yes I have seen coal mines restored to grassy knolls, but there are ghost towns in the East created from industries that vanished. There is housing out west that is too expensive for the service worker to afford. There are wind turbine farms sitting idle, after their product was deemed too expensive. There are pit mines that create environmental conditions for the country to deal with. Is this corporate greed or lack of government control. This is not new, but has been happening through out time. Who is the real bad guy or who is derelict in their duty?

There is no way to discuss this without crossing the political line......

Maybe it is because an industry once existed because of government funding or a policy ....then somewhere down the road the government decides it no longer wants to fund it or they change policy so it no longer becomes profitable .

Subsidies, trade agreements, mandates, EPA regulations, etc etc.

The old unreclaimed mines make the best riding spots, as long as you donn't get caught, robbed, or shot

Yeah, why should we care about a toxic superfund site?

Honest question, what would happen if the government stopped subsidizing anything other than mandatory things like defense and infrastructure?

Not disagreeing with you, but this could turn polical quickly.

I guess government is political in nature but I have no concern which side is doing what, just was a genuine question. Like randomly they decide rehab halfway houses gets funding, or solar panels, or, or, or, and this has knock on effects and costs mega tax dollars, I don’t care which side it came from so keep it non political just was a genuine question.

I am sure they subsidize things that I don’t even think of and has effects I couldn’t picture, so really just curious what you folks think would happen if overnight, no more subsidy.

I agree, and I would like to hear some answers about that myself.

I think it's because too many projects would never be realized if you forced them to put up full deconstruction/remediation costs upfront. The people creating these regulation have two opposing forces, one being revenue/jobs/etc., the other being how to deal with the toxic/dangerous junk sometime down the road, and they value one of those things a lot more than the other. It's just the same old greed-fueled shortsightedness that you get when someone dangles something shiny. The pile of buffalo skulls is as prevalent as it ever was, it just changes shape over time.

I live near love canal, probably one of the biggest news stories in history about industry doing exactly what the OP is talking about . I was going to add Walmart buildings ,as soon as the town says no more zero taxes ,they pack up and move to the town next door and leave all their trash behind.

Sucks but We have all seen booming malls and shopping centers with big name businesses close down and vacant till eventually being torn down and building something else there.

l grew up in the shadow of the Santa Susana nuclear meltdown, albeit 20 years after it happened, and they are still fighting over who is responsible for remediating that shit. 67 fucking years later.

Non political answer because it doesn’t matter if it’s Blue or Red they all do it, here’s what happens- Lobbyists buy political backing to destroy a town, preserve, valley, national fricking park, and they do so at incredible profits. When they are done and the resources are used up, they either reclaim or they vacate and let lawyers fight it out. If they vacate, the government comes in and mediates the problem (with tax payer dollars) for justification of their existence. Create a problem, generate money to fix said problem, lie about using those funds and then repeat. That’s the general run down.
