And at that race in Spain in 1996, I think that one was pretty easy for us. In the first moto, I had the lead, and Lamson and Sebastian Tortelli were behind me. I remember talking to Lamson before the race, and I told him he needed to beat Tortelli and show the world that he was the best 125 rider in the world. So I let them go by. I didn’t care what I did as long as I was the first 500. So I got a front row seat to this amazing battle between Lamson and Tortelli, and I was proud of Steve, he won it.

As a ten year old I remembered thinking those helmets were the coolest. It was the first design I tried to paint. I might try to redo it one day.

The AMA of course didn't have an open class by that time . I think they used the same KX 500 for a few years . It was like they broke it out of the shed and cleaned it up for the race. Smile

Truth. If that jump was at some local track nowadays half of the C class and likely even a few in the beginner class would hit it without thinking. Only thing is they would throw a super-sick whip-scrub while doing it.

If the euro pros weren't clearing it there's no way even the intermediates in the USA would jump it. A beginner lol

First, I'd like to say I am honored you chose to comment on a post I made 7 years ago as your first ever Vital post!  Welcome! Cheerful

I was obviously being facetious, sort of.  My comment was more a statement about the progression of bikes since 1996 and the sand baggers in the C and D classes nowadays.  The Beginner part was heavy use of poetic license! Sideways

But seriously, the pics of the Jerez jump make it look quite spectacular, but the videos make it look much less impressive.   Any jump that guys on 125's were throwing heel clickers and other tricks over would certainly be handled by sand bagging C riders on pimped out 45+HP 250F's nowadays, not to mention 60HP stock 450's.  Have you seen some of the jumps these kids do in their sleep anymore?

Emig knows the Biggest thing in Mx is who is the fastest 125 rider in the world. Lamson showed the World that he was. Perfect display of manualing riding with the rear wheel threw hills and switch backs. The jump is more impressive than laroccos leap. 96 was the last best USA ride at the mxdn. MC was pointing to the crowd off the jump.

Brought this topic back to life as Jerez 1996 is a day to remember.

Just finished reading it all. Those Euro fans must have been blown away when the first US rider launched the quad.

I've been looking for some vids on the net but nothing found so far.

Just to revive this awesome thread (the pics are great) yet again. I have yet to find a track map of how the track looked like because I cannot find any info on that. Also any more pics on the bikes would be fantastic. Especially the CR125s (Everts rode one as well). To see what kind of trick parts they had on.

@ruy  tienes mas fotos del día? a lo mejor te has quedado con una tarjeta o un folleto del circuito?

What would I give to ride a track like this...

The whole race is on youtube now.  Its great.

Those three were the best outdoor riders in the world that year.

For historians,  did Emig have to ride the 500?  He would have been faster on the 250.
