Steve brought up on his podcast that its weird how the guy who gets the most points and stays healthy across sx and mx doesnt get anything, but apparently ama has been approached by the teams about this and is considering it. It would have to be grand national champion right? Thats what it used to be. They dont need the blue plate or anything smx already does that, but what do u guys think, bring it back?

I don't mind it. Manufactures probably like since it gives them another chance at having a "champion" for selling bikes.

They should call it the SMX World Championship and they can run a special Purple background.

To me, it would be more of an "Iron man" award. The guy who has accumulated the most points in each series at the end of the combined season has been riding the longest at the tip of the spear without missing much time due to illness or injury. These guys are incredible athletes, I think recognizing that athletisism would be well deserved. It's not an easy feat.

Imagine Hunter, who almost retired due to persistent injuries, perservering and winning the SMX Iron Man (and maybe a title too). Thats a great story.

True that may be better so theres not so many god damn championships.

One of the pods also mentioned something like a hard charger award or something for a guy like mumford who climbed all the way back up the mountain from the bottom all the way back to the top over the year… then unfortunately fell back down, but something for a guy like that might be cool too idk.

Maybe you've seen it , but I've never met anyone who's bought a new bike because pro rider x is on it.

So like a Gold Star on JCoop's number plate, most points in a season, but no championships won? (for 2026)

This is a dumb idea

I know a guy that paid $200 more for a Husky instead of the GasGas he wanted, because Justin Barcia (on GasGas at the time) was a dick to him at a restaurant.

I love it, fuck off the SMX crap, give the riders the option to rest.

Give the Grand National purple plate to the 450 rider with the most points.

Unless it comes with another big fat check, I don't think riders will care much.

David Bailey won the Grand National Championship both years it existed, 1983 and 1984. Then it went away.

Wouldn't it be Hunter this year?

Damn near won SX, and might win MX.

Get rid of SMX. Work together for an overall champ with less money for each individual championship with the bulk of the money on a combined title.  Let’s force the softer guys that don’t want to do MX into racing all year or take a pay cut.

There definitely should be money and a trophy for a Grand National Champ!!

I don't get this narrative of forcing guys to ride outdoors.

Everyone complains the season is too long, but then they race off season races in the UK and around the world...

The guys that want to take a break from MX, well they get labeled as soft.

Kenny takes off MX to race WSX and nobody complains OR they say just for the paycheck.

Cooper hates racing in the summer and gets flak for it every year, but still shows up (even if its just for a round or 3, like previous years)

They all have their own schedules for a multiple of reasons, can't we just leave it at that?

Rant off.

Ever hear of a CR selling because of a guy named MC, the King or sometimes Jeremy McGrath?

The SMX "championship" is basically 1 race, thanks to the most ill conceived points structure in the history of sports.  The entire "championship" is 99% based on the outcome of the final race.  I watch it, because, well......it's moto and I love moto.  But, in terms of rider accomplishments, winning an SMX championship means nothing.   It's a tragedy that the payout for winning is so huge.  I'd rather see that money distributed during the regular SX and moto seasons.

All of which is a roundabout way of saying that I support the concept of a Grand National championship determined by points earned in supercross and motocross, but adjusted so SX and moto are given equal weight.

In my opinion, the more the better. Why? Because it provides the riders something to latch on to for confidence. In the dark ages we had 125 250 500 MX and 250 and 500 SX. 5 legit national champions with confidence. We had some great battles, and I suspect the high confidence can be attributed to part of that.

No, Honda,s were selling very well before MC hit puberty.

Probably the best selling mx bike, from mid 80,s onto the late 90,s.

What about:

125 futures mx/sx, run emx style.

250sx/mx (250 2 strokes legal) grand natl champ for most points combined at the end. Full schedules both sx and mx, no coasts.

450sx/mx same thing GNC for combined points.

SMX is one open class, two motos. 250 riders vs 450 riders, 500cc 2 strokes legal if you want, top 10 mxgp riders automatically qualify.

That would be fun.

Nope. Either you won a series championship or you didn’t. Most points but didn’t win either title? I don’t mind giving that person some recognition, but don’t call it a championship. You could do the obvious and call it Most Points Award, or come up with something more marketable, but championship ain’t it.

Buddy,

Davey sold motocross off to Feld at the end of the 2022 season. You're 4 years too late.
