Enough about split screens................The important issue is, how soon can they tell me, "Points as they run"?

What I don't understand, they have a pre-recorded interview with Barcia, and an important battles materializes on screen... Just stop the interview and call the racing! I don't understand how racing isn't the top priority.

I swear yeeeeears ago supercross used to do a good Picture in Picture where one was a main screen and the other was smaller but could follow stew ripping through the pack after a crash or something.

Anyway the issue which Weege seems oblivious to is all that blue around the screens, I get they can’t make it too big or they will get cut off, but we don’t need a blue border

But I feel like the sentiment some of these guys show sometimes toward fans online (on Vital, social media, etc) can be so dismissive... it's like they're writing off the biggest, most tuned-in focus group they could ask for, that's literally at their fingertips, all because of the 10% of trolls and assholes that just talk shit. But that's not exclusive to moto, that's for any niche hobby or sport, that's just how the internet works.

Anyway, the split screens suck. On a 65 inch 4K TV, I can't make out the rider's numbers in either box. There is room for improvement with the split screen, without a doubt.

The top industry people constantly look down on regular fans and it's one of those things that has annoyed me for a long, long time. Sure, many moto fans are uneducated buffoons. And there are loud minority trolls that are a pain in the ass online. But many are people with actual real life success and many are highly educated.

The Racer X guys are the worst bunch regarding this topic.

I have obviously no actual proof of this but my gut feeling is that a larger % of the fan base has proper degrees and careers compared to the industry insiders. There aren't many industry insiders/media people with MSc. degrees, that is for sure.

Yes, the majority of them attended this school (see below) and yet shit on the fans all the time. What is most galling is that they...

Yes, the majority of them attended this school (see below) and yet shit on the fans all the time. What is most galling is that they scoff at some of the speculation the fans are forced to entertain, forgetting this is because they - the moto 'media' - won't actually report on anything and like to hold on to their insider information.

As JT$ says, there is so much you simply dont know.

Split screen works as it does so the aspect ratio of each feed is retained, thats really easy (relatively) to do, the height is what it is , and that sets the width as well.   The rest is what it is, the timing tower stays the same.

This is live, on the fly broadcasting, the big problem is that they have to shoehorn other stuff in , when it isnt needed.  We missed a pass for the lead because we were listening to Barcia, when Weege and JS7 should have been going crazy .   The background stuff should never be done 'in race'.

Some of you never watched on a 24in TV and it shows.

Life hack, buy a smaller TV and just sit closer.

Have to disagree with that last statement. We all haven’t worked our butts off to afford the best tv we can to settle for watching this broadcast on an iPad for clarity.

This issue is magnified because really this split screen nonsense is just that. Nonsense most of the time.

The point was more about the fact that while people are moaning about the quality of the broadcast, and how it is edited,  the quality of the picture is an entirely separate issue, which is made worse by people trying to watch it on huge screens.

i just like that fact i can watch it live, for $1.50 a race.

You're saying a big screen far away looks worse than a smaller screen that's closer to you? If they're the same resolution, picture quality is going to be the same.

That’s better and shows they are listening.

But why does the blue background still need to be not covered up completely? Like an amateur production.

Vurb/Goat Kreations etc had better production skills in 2006 than what we watch today.

They’ve always used PIP at times usually for replays but they usually go split screen for live racing

The original post making a good, well spoken and articulated counterpoint. Then at least half the replies are making Weege and JT's point.

Much improved. But seeing this makes me wonder, is the aspect ratio impossible to crop/adjust in real time? Broadcast live, is a custom cropped ratio to maximize both boxes impossible? That's the real question. Or would cropping the sides off remove too much action and result in a poor shot?

Think of these logistics before you just hit the "the broadcasters are so dumb!" button, resulting in them dismissing most complaints, because they know the logistics they have to work with. Ask questions first, don't just say they all suck at their jobs and are nothing but paid shills.

If they expand the main screen to cover all the blue background, the small picture will be blocking too much of the main view. If they make the small picture smaller to compensate, then it will be too tiny to be able to see anything.

The only way to put multiple pictures on the screen and cover the whole area is to crop at least one of the pictures (like old school TV aspect ratio), which I doubt would go over well.

Big box full, if the small box gets bigger then so be it.  Better than what looks like a 6th grader threw up on their desktop.
