Can someone help me to understand the obsession with tats? I'm obviously clueless as I do not have a single one, nor do I care to.

I'm old enough to remember when having tats was not a normal thing. It was mostly Hardly Davidson wanna be badasses or convicts.

But when I see beautiful women with them covering their bodies, I shake my head.

But this one takes the cake! 🤢🤮

Click on the link more weirdness.  People got a tat in jail , bikers & military.  Punk rockers 79-88 didn’t hv tats , colored there hair though but that grows out. Crazy hair cuts & Mohawks wore mechanics shirts that said Mike.  And where labeled the worst in society.  I,m all for hv your own unique style.  But this tat craze is the norm now & your much more unique Not having one.

I guess this’ll be us, G-Man…I just don’t get the whole tattoo thing either! 🤔 🥵

I often think of an old supervisor I had all the way back in High school ( in early 80’s!) who used to say “Not everyone that has a tattoo is a turd, but EVERY turd, has a tattoo!” 🫪 👍❗️

I like tattoos and have quite a few, but that picture at the top is nothing more than a mental disorder and an artist that enables them.

Completely agree. For reference I'm 34 and I'm one of the few in my friends groups and work groups that have 0 tattoo's.

They have now become such a common off the shelf item that the whole idea around tattoo's has changed for me. Like mentioned it used to be a bad ass, Harley, Rock/Metal-head style piece. Now some of the wettest people in society have off the shelf Rose/Clock/Roman Numeral/Stars/Koy Fish/Swallow tattoo's.

In my teens and 20's I originally thought I would get a tattoo. I went to a few tattoo conventions etc, but in the end would always rather spend the massive chunk of cash on bikes! It's not something I would entertain now.

WWII Navy veterans, biker gangs, convicts, and crazy people...
...and now your run of the mill attention whore...
...I am sure there are a few one-off tattoos (and only one) that are a memorial to a loved one that is lost.

...groups that have tattoos...  ...only two of these groups I respect for their tattoos...
...WWII Navy vets and the one-off memorial...
...for the rest, they squander their money in my opinion...
...that money should be spent on their children or getting by or dirt bikes...

...downvote away Vitards!

Right on the money JB...

Like most here, dirt bikes, DH bikes, and generally living a life of, high speed/low drag, has me sporting my fair share of decent scars.

Those are my tats. Each one with a, "no shit there i was, thought I was going to die" story to go along with it.

Lots of ink on the legs is more common than not in HI.

I just went through a pretzel like conversation with AI about extreme body art. When AI finally got tired of me shooting down all of the psycho babble it was spitting up, it came to a more realistic explanation. It is easy to herd AI in the direction you want though. Meaning it can be almost useless in many situations.

No ink on me and no desire to. It's rare to see one I like. One of those was a wheat head tattoo on a young woman's forearm. It was her only visible tattoo as I stood behind her in line at the grocery store. This was up in the Palouse region in Washington where thats the crop that is farmed. So it represented how her family makes a living. I can get behind that.

I have an idea for a chest tat but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I want a front view of a big African elephant with the trunk going down below the belt line.

That looks more like a dude!!!!! I have never had even the smallest inkling of desire to get a tatoo. Never been able to figure those things out. But if I ever did it would be a butterfly on the chest like Papillion.

Always thought about it, never made the move, in 1983 I was in line for one in Sturgis, got close to the front and bailed - I didn't have a reason other than I was in line and everyone was doing it, I felt silly - so if it was silly then, it's really silly now at 67.

I race MTB out west at least once a year, and I see most of the guys from California have calf tats , nearly every one - must have been a trend for a year or two out there

My brother passed away almost 14 years ago.  He and his kids all have ink.  I thought it would be a way to honor him getting some ink in his memory on me.  It took a long time to kind of come up with an idea.  I found an old check with his signature on it and blew it up.  My plan was to put some kind of a cross on my left side with his signature on it.  I still have not done it.  At this point, I probably won't now it has been so long.

I see many ladies with lots of ink that look good, but I have never seen a lady without ink that I thought would look better with.

Yep, exactly. You see a lot of homeless people or people that aren't really well off, but their covered with tats 🙄. I don't have any idea how expensive they are but i've heard that they're not cheap.

So it's their choice, spend countless dollars to ink up your body for LIFE or maybe a couple new tires for your motorcycle and other assorted goodies.

To me it's a no brainer.

I only have one tattoo… you can’t see it when I’m clothed.

Most of the time you’d just see a W and y.

Other times it says “ Welcome to the Bahamas, I hope you enjoy your stay!”

I almost asked, but I think I'm glad I didn't.  🤣

When my oldest was young, she said that she was going to get a tattoo when she turned 18. A couple weeks before her 18th birthday I sat her down and went through some old family pictures, asking her what she thought about the clothes and hairstyles. She thought they looked pretty stupid today, of course.

I asked her what she’d think if those clothes and hairstyles were permanent and they had to stay forever…..

She’s 33 and no tattoos so far.

Never been a fan of Tats.  Or nose rings, or pierced noses, or pierced area right under the lower lip.  Ear lobes are OK but not those big hole in the ear lobe things.

I knew a girl that had a tattoo of a conch shell on her inner thigh, when you put your ear up to it you could smell the ocean.

As someone that is tattooed it’s hypocritical to judge others but there was a time not too long ago where tattoo artists would refuse to do the tats the OP posted. They wouldn’t do hands or necks never mind your face.

Like most things in life, broad judgements are not smart. I got some pretty harsh judgement at a dinner party once by a religious woman who was later caught cheating on her husband. Made me very self conscience about them even though I’ve never harmed anyone and think I’m a stand up individual. Part of me wishes I’d never got a single one but we don’t get to go back in time. Plus I’m old and ugly anyway, might as well keep at it.

I go in for bloodwork every three months. I dread even that needle jab.

No frikkin' way I'd be able to sit there and have that done.

Heard a comedian say once, "that cute little butterfly above your butt, will turn into a hideous dragon once you get old"

I wasn't judging others. I was trying to understand the obsession with getting them. I understand why veterans and people who have lost loved ones would.

Remember it VERY well!

(Think of ALL the tramp-stamps Profesh has prolly seen over the years!? 🤪)

Ironically, my wife has a REALLY good friend that is a few years younger than her, who has ONE tattoo…(you guessed it, a tramp-stamp!) and she has ONE regret…getting a tramp-stamp in college! She is a pretty, athletic, gainfully employed gal that REFUSES to wear ANY attire that would reveal the tattoo, and has told my wife her gift to herself for her upcoming 50th birthday is having the abomination she branded herself with in college laser’d off before the end of the year!

I’ve heard her with my own two ears, routinely counseling any young folk that will listen…do NOT have some random/moronic image permanently drawn onto your body!
It WILL eventually “not be cool” & You WILL live to regret it…telling them if it’s not a memorial tattoo or something that is REALLY important or means something to you, you better think HARD about it because…it IS for LIFE!

My brother lost his wife & high school sweetheart in a fatality car accident in 2001…he went and got his only tattoo, a small memorial to her…I can see & understand something like that!
But these days I see MANY pointless/random tattoos that look like a poorly executed art project drawn on by a drunken 8th grader…those just leave me shaking my head! 🫨 ❗️

My daughter is in her mid 30s and has a fair amount of tats. Well, I shouldn't say tats as it's more of a one big ongoing piece of art work. Would I want that for her? Not so much, do I judge her for it? Nope, her body her life. She invested a lot of time in the design, (think years) before she ever got her first dot. Not a random fleeting thought. She loves it, who am I to tell her that it's not great if it brings her joy. Apparently this is some design that the tattoo artist really likes and wants to use in his adverts. She's like, I don't really think so, I did this for me not everyone else. What I do tell her is, my preference is no tats, because the tats take away attention from the natural beauty. Your eyes will focus on the tats vs some subtle features that make an individual beautiful. Beyond that, if she were to get face tats, then we would be having a talk.
