They have two free weekends on August 1 and 8. They are more than welcome in Lommel on August 1-2.

I'm not sure why this is causing so much drama. MX2 has a more consistent and deep top 5-6 than AMA 250 this season, especially with Jo's season of injuries. Pick any of the previous few years and Deegan, Jett etc were the best 250 riders around.

These things go in cycles, and right now the US 250 class is the weakest and most inconsstent it's been in a long time. Malin was ruffling some feathers but he's not wrong. I'd take Sacha, Farres, Valin, McClellan, Langenfelder all to win a moto and/or the overall at Southwick this season. Last season, I'd have said Deegan could beat Kay and Langenfelder on most hardpack tracks if he came to the GPs, because he was head and shoulders above the AMA 250 guys everyone's scrambling to defend right now. A fit and fully healthy 2025 version of Jo is the only guy I think could beat Sacha and co at Southwick, but of course he wouldn't be allowed to race MX2 in Europe and nor would Levi, Hammaker, or most of the others who were favourites coming into the season. The biggest thing with the AMA 250s right now is they're massively inconsistent - saw a stat in another thread that Levi has only led 6 laps so far this season and has the red plate. His top end speed honestly might be higher than a Farres or Coenen but he spends a lot of time making up for bad starts, making silly mistakes, or generally just having head scratcher rides

In the Sand sure... but Davies was there enough with Coenen I don't think i'd just flat say that on normal track conditions.

Funny, because all the MXGP riders want to come to the States, but Zero U.S. riders want to go race in Europe.

Why is that?

More money, better (on average) tracks, easier lifestyle with less international travel, more publicity, and the chance to race supercross. Why wouldn't people want to give that a try? And what has that got to do with how good they are?

Americans rarely make the switch because there's less money (on average), it's a huge culture shock, and, to be blunt most of the riders who would be willing to do it aren't good enough. Anyone good enough to get a factory MX2 or MXGP ride could get a factory ride in the states where the quality of life is better and they don't need to uproot their lives or families. Plus let's be honest, most of these American kids grow up with a silver spoon in facilities and riding perfect conditions every day even if they're never going to score points - there aren't many out there who would actually bet on themselves and go race GPs like Osborne did

The USA has practice track riders, not racers. I don't know how many times during the Spring Creek broadcast of the 250 race Weege went off about Bennick and Cochran being faster than JuJu during the week. As if it is relevant. Every MXGP race is a three-day event. The USA races are only a day, then it is back to practice. The Coombs family controls upper level amateur and pro racing in this country, and we have seen a slip in the competitiveness of young riders and our team in the MXoN more and more every year as their policies on track design, race day track maintenance, starting procedures, race day schedules and the like have been implemented. The upper echelons of our sport are now the place of USA riders in their 30s or foreign riders because the upcoming young riders cannot make the jump (save for Haiden). Does anyone really think a rider like DiFrancesco, Kitchen, Hymas, or Drew Adams could top 5 an MX2 GP? Or even top 10?  Or ever make the jump into 450s here and win against the likes of Lawrences, Coenens, Prados and whoever the hell else is coming over? As far as MX2 top 5 winning an overall here, of course they would, they race - the USA riders practice riding and bicycle. In his last race here, Sacha gave a pounding the likes of which I haven't seen since the Pam Anderson/Tommy Lee video. When you listen to the USA's best and brightest young riders interviews they know more about golf, fishing, and "gaming" then the motorcycles they race. Big difference between competing and practicing. Fairly or not, young USA racers are show ponies, the Euro and Australasian riders are draft horses.

Mailin said today in the MX2 qualifying race that every rider in the top 5 in MX2 class could have gone 1-1 in the states and their 6th place rider could have won a moto. I thought that was a bit much. Especially since only 3 guys win in MX2 for the most part. What does Vital say?

When a GP rider has to go through the SX meat grinder first, then get 2 weeks to find a bike set up, learn a new track prob carrying a injury or two it no doubt levels the playing field somewhat.

End of discussion Mr Malin.

Pro tennis players can't win a pro ping pong tournament either, what's your point? That the USA doesn't have motocross? Pretty sure there is more motocross tracks in New York or Florida and more motocross bikes sold in those separate states than in the entire nations of Belgium, or France.

7 of the last 16 regional titles were won by European riders or Australian riders who grew up racing in Europe and EMX/mx2

Vialle was here not along ago and aside from one guy that decimated everyone else, he got the best over most of our guys, SX & MX. Sadly I think it says more about our 250 series than theirs.

The US 250 class isn’t slow, it is very inconsistent. Compare lap times to the 450 class and they’re just a second or two slower across the board (which is understandable with the smaller displacement). With that said Sacha did an amazing job laying the wood to them at Southwick. That shouldn’t be expected from him every week, and it certainly wouldn’t be expected by an entire group of other guys coming over.

Paul was just stirring the pot at a pretty crappy time. He knows that the top of the class isn’t doing MXdN for any country so he can hide behind his comment without getting shown up in October.

I really don't think Paul was thinking that deep about an offhand comment about the relative strength of the two smaller classes on one specific track in one very specific season where nobody seems to want to fill Deegan's shoes in the pro nationals

It's just a dumb argument...... no different than saying RJ could go win an mxgp because Jett dominates mxgp guys every time he races them.

Both series are pretty good but the talent only ever moves one direction, so.....

It's impossible to take any comment serious whenever someone starts comparing 250 to 450 lap times. Have people not learned over the years that this isn't a good indicator (or never was)?

Imagine how high the GP level would be if they didn't lose all of their top riders to the US all the time

Who gives a shit Malin has always been pro mxgp. Coming from a guy who doesn't have a great win record of his own.  And seems bitter about it and back in his prime would have struggled if would have came to the states.

The GPs should improve rider pay, add purse money, and get rid of Luongo to keep some of them 😁😁 but most of the guys that come to the US want to race SX, so not much they can do with that.

Why is that?

The depth of field in MXGP doesn't change the fact that they have greedy promoters and race on some awful venues. On top of that the schedule is absolutely horrendous. Also way more money in the US for specially non championship riders (they are making more while only racing the nationals vs the full MXGP calendar).

Also despite the fact that most of us fans prefer MX over SX.. Most riders actually want to race SX these days and you need to go in to the US for that.

Is that so hard to understand?

What’s “impossible” is comparing two different 250 classes on two different continents. I’m not expecting the 250 and 450 times to be the same. Just using 450 as a baseline since it is understood that the top of the 450 class is strong. The 250 class lap times are 1-2 seconds slower pretty uniformly from 1st through 25th. I would assume the same in MXGP. Just trying to make the point that the US 250 isn’t slow, but they are very inconsistent in where they finish. Just because there isn’t an established “winning guy” week in and week out doesn’t mean the class is slow.

Yeah, it's definately an advantage for a GP rider to stop mid-season, travel to the other side of the world, jump on an unfamiliar bike on an unfamiliar track, jet-lagged, racing a one-day series instead of two, against guys who've ridden the track for years, riding their own bikes on home turf... 🙄

I totally get your point on the travel, but it should be pointed out that not a ton of US riders in the 250 class have much if any experience riding at Southwick.

Kitchen and Ryder D were our only top riders who had raced there more than once in the past. Loads of our guys were racing there for their first time as well.
