Motocross starts are ruining the sport

Sending million dollar athletes to wreck themselves playing a game of chicken for no reason. It's the dumbest design in all of modern sports.

Ruining the sport? It’s how it was started. What’s a suitable alternative that’s safer?

Same for us amateurs too. It’s a kamikaze inbred cock fight for no reason.

My preference would be no grate, no holeshot device. Let them fix their spot behind the gate for sure, maybe even for the first 10 feet to deal with when someone digs a trench going sideways.

It will create more space between riders in the first turn.

They should let Haiden do his own start, separate from everyone else, then safely insert him into the field based on his time through the start segment of the track. Who’s with me fellas?

Maybe we should get pace bikes too.  Whenever there’s a yellow flag the fastest local pro comes out to pace the pack and get them all bunched up again.

What would be your idea on how to start 40 riders at the same time? The current MX first turn is one of the most exciting things of an entire moto.

That's the game.  You may not like it.  Its not for everyone.    Try watching timed rally or something else?

I suppose at this level the grates don't have the same impact. In amateur without grates, the best gate is the best gate, until it isn't. Everyone uses the best one(s) and after all the motos it's worn out and some other gates are the best. It then becomes a guessing game in which gate really is the best one, it's part of the race strategy. Grates eliminate a big part of that, but I suppose with only 4 motos it wasn't such a differentiator. Still, letting skill and HP offer some separation isn't bad in my book. First turns are brutal, boot buckles get ripped off, fingers broken, swingarms gashed up, and levers ruined without even crashing or making a mistake.

I partially agree with op. Starts are probably the most exciting part of motocross and the most dangerous as well, even at the local level. Knowing this, I don't know why they start on grates with a holeshot device so low the bike looks like a dragster. For sure we would still see first turn pile-up without these two things, but the guys would be coming 5-10mph slower into the first turn and a little further appart so for sure the risk of injury would be lower. It wouldn't be as exciting for tv tho, so we probably won't see any changes.

I know this is sarcasm, but it would be kinda interesting to see that. Say instead of a red flag you do a rolling caution with a pace rider wheels must stay on the ground then when the green flag flies back to racing.

Exactly the mindset that's wrong. Needless traditionalism holding the sport back. Both 250 and 450 moto 1 were over before they even started and million dollar athletes injured for no reason. Dumbest business practice I could imagine.

More exciting than seeing the top riders battle every single moto? That's what you're trading in for traditional starts, every single moto we could see Deegan vs Lawrences. But we never get to see anything because of the starting method.

Line up Q1-40 from inside gate to outside gate. Drop each gate in .25 second intervals. Safe and offers racers a chance every single moto and the fans get to see the top riders battle every single moto. Problem solved.

MX starting method is the equivalent to the NFL's kickoff problem. The NFL realized that destroying million dollar athletes for one play of the game is dumb as hell so they made adjustments.

It’s so obvious too but you’ll never get this crowd there.
