Two reasons: he’s not Deegan and he’s not an American. The first is self explanatory and the second, well, I think people don’t want others to think they are xenophobic so they overcompensate when it comes to foreign based riders.
Humble guy who comes off likable in interviews and soundbites. Also people like different thing sin this world, it's cool you still wear TapOut gear but some of us have different tastes.
People like Jo because he comes off as authentic in a sport that's severely lacking in human personalities. He's laid back, combatted Deegan's bullshit with silliness, and he's very honest about his performances. When he got his first podium he said he didn't deserve it because people crashed, whereas most people would say, "yeah, no, we've been working hard, can't thank my team."
Yeah, I don't see why he'd be anything else than humble.

Of course, watching for years guys like McAdoo, Hammaker or Hampshire, I guess Shimoda looks like a very solid rider.

I don't understand how it would even be possible to race at a championship level without loving it. It seems like you would need more than just financial motivation to put in the training required and then be able to put in the effort on race day. I could see a guy who is not really pushing it and finishing in 10th place just doing it for the money. But competing for wins?

Sounds like you should call HRC and set them straight on how to deal with their riders.
It’s pretty well known that RV disliked racing for a large period of his career and was just in it for the money. He’s even stated that he had a $$ figure in mind and when he reached it he pulled the pin.

Agreed. He has the speed, talent and potential, but there’s really not many accolades to back up that he has been a factor as far as wins. He’s been a runner-up guy..then the champs move up so we expect to see guys like him and Levi win the next year - but a new kid ends up stepping in and getting it done instead. He’s had 3 SX wins and 6-7 MX wins in a long 250 career being considered a top guy. I’m glad he won SMX though
