Marchbanks has never been a dirty racer. He's racing for his livelihood next year. He's not just going to lay up for a position.early in the race.
There's no way he thought during that fraction of a second that he would have crashed with Eli.
Since you called these guys hacks, I’m gonna call you out.
T bone?
Never said he was a dirty racer...but that was a very dumb move. If you are racing for your 'livelihood next year' you have to be smarter than that!
95% of the racers out there (or more) would not have done what he did. You have to be aware of your situation. He hurt himself, too.
Eli took the inside line in the previous corner that led to the outside line in the following corner. He decided to take the inside line in the following corner instead, but Marchbanks was already there.
At the same time, Marchbanks was railing the outside line in the previous turn, and accelerated quickly coming out of the turn, then naturally was going to take the inside line, but Eli was there. It seems both riders saw each other too late to back off.
The track builders should've kept the 2 lanes separate like they've done many times at Daytona. Of course the fastest path is taking the inside line in both turns, but we saw what that leads to.
I blame this first on the track builders. They know better. Second, on Tomac. It was his responsibility to make sure he could cross over safely or he should've taken inside, then outside. I believe he did look over, but he was already moving to his left and into Marchbanks' path. Marchbanks was flying out of that turn. I don't see anything he did that another rider in same conditions wouldn't have done.

You can downvote him all you want but this is about as solid of an analysis as you are gonna find. Good take here @Radical.
With respect to Yamaboy, I suck at making chops, so I asked GPT to turn the crash into Eli breakdancing, and this is all I could get it to do.
If Marchbanks had 1/2 a bike on Tomac and Tomac hit Marchbanks in the side of his bike I would be calling ET3 a dumbass for pulling a rooking move.
Tomac had 1/2 a bike on 36 . Did you watch the start of each 450 moto? Prado had 1/2 a bike on Jett and Jett didn't keep it pinned, instead he backed down and ceded the line to Prado. What did marchbanks gain by swinging his dick on the 2nd turn of the 1st moto of the 1st race of the series
so you want to debate semantics and subjectiveness. what do you call it when one rider collides with another rider and hits him in between his front and back wheel. Marchbanks hit Tomacs bike dead center so hard they both went flying
I don’t call it an extra capital T.
Garrett had more speed, cuz he came from the outside and was on the gas sooner. Tomac turned to avoid contact but was on the gas, meaning understeer, while accelerating forward and rotating to the right on his rear wheel at the same exact time G’s front wheel drove through Tomac’s.
G’s line wasn’t the very edge as he was moving to the right a bit to set up for the next corner.
He did make an effort to move left and avoid contact. Both of them steering away from each other probably made it worse because it changed the front wheel angles at contact and both riders/bikes were not centered and balanced.
Sometimes more T is better. Plenty of examples of that and guys don’t even crash. (Those examples are why I’m baffled by your claim at the egregiousness of the “T bone”)
I wanted to blame the track design initially because G might have not seen Eli until the last second. This angle makes me not believe that was the case.
Very hard to swallow racing incident and I feel compassion for anyone who is in either of these guys’ boots.
I can understand the emotions of the incident so I get wanting to blame G. And I am willing to give you a pass on calling these guys hacks because I appreciate the opportunity to say all of the following…
Freddie moved into 3rd all time in pro motocross starts, and is a couple races from 2nd. He built himself into a SX main event guy (who cares how he qualified) from scratch. He rode for Factory Honda. He’s made a living racing professional MX/SX in the US for like 13 years, in the 450 class. He has done it as the ultimate privateer, from another country no less. He has built things for the next chapter in life. And he is a family man through and through.
Freddie is a fucking badass.
Agreed. I think our posts fill in each other’s gaps.
I don’t agree on the track design making a split section necessarily, as it’s up to the riders to find the fast way around and do it while anticipating racers others’ actions (which is, they are gonna likely take the fast way around and likely err on the side of not letting off).
When I saw him on the mule on the backboard, I wanted to cry. I didn't, but I have cried since. Ever since daytona, everything has gone down hill. I really hope he takes time off to heal. It sucks when he isn't on the gate, but the legend needs his rest. Also, I am surprised the visor hung on for dear life when it normally comes right off for much more minor classes.
I think it's pretty obvious at this point that it's clearly not a magnetic visor
I don’t see how your analysis on Tomac is correct. Tomac held his line exactly where that corner leads you out. He still had right lean to his bike he came out so fast, so merging to his left like your saying, I just don’t see it.
Secondly, Marchbanks even admits in his post race that he wanted to get Tomac back, so clearly he was motivated. I don’t think the consensus is Marchbanks did this purposely, but I do think he lacked race awareness in that moment.
Situational awareness was certainly lacking for Marchbanks. He admitted that Eli passed him and he wanted to pass him right back on the first lap. It's not a racing incident. It's an average pro rider forcing the issue at the wrong place at the wrong moment with an all time legend of the sport. Tomac does NOT let off and was clearly ahead of the #36 coming out of the corner. He floated outside WTFO and blasted Tomac....
Marchbanks qualified almost 4 seconds faster than Eli and was clearly at a better pace all morning. He had every right to think he had the pass made. Good luck telling any racer to let off the gas so they can get passed in the first few turns of the season opener. Time to get off the internet and go spin a few laps with others to remember what it feels like.
Hit the nail on the head…first few turns of the season opener.
Any new updates on his condition out there?
He had every right to think he had the pass made, except for his own admission that Tomac had just made the pass on him. He was aware. This is majority blame pie to Marchbanks. And if he clearly has the better pace then why is he getting passed.
