Washougal National

After decades of watching I'm finally planning to attend a Pro National... Washougal is close, so it's the one. A couple of questions for people that know, is the VIP experience worth it in your opinion? Also, I will be in my camper van staying for 4 nights at the track, appreciate any recommendations on what camp area would suit a 50yo, something not too close to the track, or the hard core party... Ill be enjoying some beers, but not looking for chaos...

One of the best nationals to attend. Camping is a OK as there is no real party zone. Camp as cloe to the track as you can and prepare to have to level up as most spots require leveling. If you can afford it, the VIP is great, gives you a place to sit and take a break, get some food and snacks all day and TV's to watch the race. During the moto's you can roam around and see different spots as it is hard to see much from one spot. The VIP area is about as good as it gets for viewing.

I went almost 10 years ago and they weren’t allowing outside alcohol in. So be sure to check on that prior to loading up. They performed the most thorough search that I have ever seen for alcohol. I still snuck two cases in by hiding it various places in my motorhome that required tools to access.

We’ve been there the last couple of years. Get there as early as possible to get a shady spot. By Thursday, they will be parking campers in the overflow grass field. I think the coolest area is right past the ticket booth, turn left down the hill, over the bridge, up to a cool meadow with trees.

When you come onto the property, they will do a pretty thorough search of your vehicle for any alcohol or marijuana. And if you leave the property, you will be re-searched on your way back in.

The venue is great! They have bands and all kinds of entertainment in the evenings.  Just down the road is a great swimming hole on the Washougal River. It’s a must in the evenings for a cool down.

Have fun!  I’m jealous we won’t be making it this year.

Traffic sucks, but if you make the right friends trackside, they'll give you the route that'll shave like 2 hours off the exit.

Also, hell on the exit. Get there early, set up camp, and stay late.

Not the best "see the whole race" venue, but as a motocross-intensive four-day camping trip? Ambiance of the trees in the mountains above the Columbia River. It's pretty good man.

Color me jealous.

Between Hangtown, GH, Budds Creek and Washougal, Washougal is my favorite national I’ve ever been to. I haven’t been since 2003 if I remember correctly, but I can’t wait to go back there eventually.

We went in 24'. We got there on Thursday morning and the shady camp spots in the trees were full so we wound up in the field. Like HBS said bring stuff to get level. If you have a mtb it makes exploring the track on thursday and friday a lot easier, race day it'll be too busy. If you have a dual sport bring it too. We rode ours to the swimming spot in the river and rode around the traffic to get back into the track. It was hot as balls that year, shade on the hill was at a premium ! Check the crowd picture, people were squeezing into the shady spots like vampires trying to avoid the sun 😄You're going to have a great time !

I did the VIP thing when I went back in 2016. Absolutely worth every penny!  Great views, unlimited food, snacks, drinks (non-alcoholic), covered tens with tables and chairs, porta-pottys, etc

It more or less sits in the middle of the track, so excellent views. Here are some pics I took that will give you an idea

My pops took my brother and I back in ‘03 and still I remember it to this day. We were down by the S corner and horsepower hill. Our local national was Glen Helen, so seeing washougal was cool and different. Ohh ya and K-Dub won that day!!!

Shougal is awesome! Definitely bring beer but be very good at hiding it. Also bring ear plugs so you can sleep.

That's what happens when people roll over cop cars. Also, pro tip here... if you bring chairs and plan to sit on the hill, bring a tire iron to dig out holes for the chair legs on the uphill side. Oh, and show up Thursday and head to PIR, its a good time.

They will be showing up as early as Monday and Tuesday. Amateur day sign up is on Wednesday with a late afternoon till evening practice. By Thursday most of the good spots will be taken.

Great pics m8 washougal & surrounding area looks amazing. Would love to make it to a national one day. Big old trek from NZ, would be well worth it I’m sure, I’ll hold off until Cole D is kickn ass and taking names is the big boys class.

I wrapped a case of beer in a white t shirt and put it next to the AC on the roof of the camper with bungees. Kind of a pain but I heard they were pretty thorough with their searches. We don't even drink that much but I was like "Challenge accepted" 😄 They missed the Tequilla in the water bottles too. And Captain Morgan is remarkably similar in color to iced tea...  maybe we do drink a lot come to think of it lol.

We were thinking of doing it again this year but the price of diesel & 12 mpg in the camper was a deal breaker. That year we took 2 weeks off and took the dog and the cat because we couldn't find a pet sitter. The cat was remarkably easy compared to what I was expecting. By the end of the trip he was cruising in the truck and hanging out in the camper just like the dog.
