I went from 6 years on a 450 to a 150sx and my riding improved, I had more fun, and I could ride longer.  Later added a 250sx to make woods riding easier.

It was a good move for me.

It is funny how many of them are anti electric too, when that's exactly how they want to ride 😂

And that's what I love about my 450. 3rd gear most of the time.

I went from CRF450 - CRF250 - CR500AF custom - 2003 CR250. I'm happiest on the two stroke 250 - easiest to ride - starts good enough for a Vet. Never limits me. I've ridden a beta RX350 two stroke and while it's better in alot of ways, I'm happy where I'm at.

On my first ride on a 250F, I stalled it. Then it took me a half hour to kickstart it. Just when I thought I was getting used to it, I endoed because of the engine braking. I lay there in the dirt, listening to the ticking sound of cooling metal and far-off dirtbikes and began to think I should stay on two strokes.

Man, that is accurate!!!! After all the years of not owning a MX bike, and having only ridden 2 strokes, I got a YZ250F. The engine braking was flat insane!!! I would have sold that damn thing in a couple weeks had i not found out about a Rekluse X clutch. That salvaged that bike for me, as engine braking sucks!!!!! Now though, I finally got smart and have a KTM 150SX and 250SX. It was meant to be . The sound, the smell, the instant blast of the powerband, sounding fast even though im not. It is the best of the best for me.

Got out of "racing" right when the 350's were coming out, and back then it felt a little more love/hate on them when to talking to guys who had them.

Fast forward to last year, it just slipped my mind that I should of been considering a 350. No regrets on the 450, as now these days more of a causal rider that just want to have fun than race again.

I just enjoy 250s, 2 stroke and 4 stroke.  Anything bigger and it sucks the fun for me, anything smaller and I realise I’m not 15 any more!

Lack of CC’s exposes lack of talent for the average Joe and that’s a tough pill to swallow for most.

I could never go back to a stock 250f. However, if i could ride a star 250 daily, id probably give up my stock 450.

Kyle, i feel like you have to be more fit to go fast on a 250f. Constant work to go fast, like the old 125 days. Now ill agree if you mean really man handle a 450. Lol. 450 lets me be smoother.

On your first ride out on your new 250 after you downgraded from a 450 and you clicked third on an open straightaway, did you immediately regret your decision or realize I can manhandle this bike way better and now have more fun each weekend?.... and then after that, did you ever think to yourself maybe this would be even more fun if I was on a two-stroke?

I think my ego is shrinking

My most recent experience (as in last week), was to downgrade from a 450 to a 250F. I have had a 350, many 450's, 250 2 strokes, and previous 250F's as well. I hadn't ridden in 2 years (longest break in 20 years), and decided to sell my 2021 Husky 450, which I really enjoyed, BUT..riding a 450 these days is just too much for me. I'm 63, pretty dang fit for my age and came to the conclusion that a 450 is one whisky throttle way from something going badly and would rather feel like I am riding a slower bike faster (perception vs reality), than a fast bike slow. I purchased a 2025 Honda CRF250 and it is a beautiful bike to ride. Just hop on and go and I'm not scared of it. Just really fun. And at this point, that is the point isn't it? My 450 days are over. A Honda just fits and I felt comfy straight away. This is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Bikes - of all types - are Fun!

But, don't think you're a 'Hero' for riding any specific type of one.

Just ride the bloody thing(s)!

Agreed.  Except for Roczen.  He’s a hero.

Funny you say that about whiskey throttle. I'm 69, very fit but I'm 5'6" 150 lbs. I've been on 250f's for many years. In 2019 I rode my buddies 450 and really liked it, so I bought a new Kawi 450.

All was good, but it always felt like it was going to jump out from under me. One day I whiiskey throttled it in some rollers and almost wiped out bad. I decided I didn't have the skill reequired to handle a 450.

Been on a 250F ever since. I'm on a 25 Kawi 250 now and loving life

I rode a 450 for years, recently went back to a 250f, 25 crf 250. Ive been having more fun riding this year than I can even remember. For me, its being able to hold it wide open and bang gears. What a blast. The 250's handle so much better, easier to turn, easier to change direction. Nothing scares me on this bike, it doesnt try to get away from me, and i always feel in control. I cant say that about a 450. My 450's also always felt heavy, like they were being pulled back to the ground by extra gravity, the 250 feels light and playful amd i can put it anywhere. I dont know, maybe the fun will wear off, but for now I couldnt be happier with my decision and I am still 235 pounds. Another 20 pounds from now and I just dont see how I could get sick of it

ill go one step further, and this is based on myself. The extra power of the 450 really seemed to make the areas where i lack skill shine through just a little more. The bigger bike really made all of my mistakes worse.

I bought my first 4 stroke this year (CRF250).  As others have said, it is a ton of fun and easy to ride.  I still have my 2 strokes (250s) and love them too, but there's no denying that the CRF is easier to ride (especially for a vet who's been racing since 1975)!  E start is a significant part of the equation.

I feel like I'm faster on the 4 stroke on a "modern" MX track, but probably a bit faster on a more open, flowing natural terrain track on my two stroke.

Both are fun (as are all MX bikes), but I'm glad my eyes were opened to the fun and easy properties that are the modern 250F.

I still ride my 450 but the Stark is another level.
2 stroke, 4 stroke , electric I love them all, but when I want to lazily blow my buddies doors off I jump on the Stark.

I suggest Stark Varg for every "Which bike should I get?" post.

Nothing against Stark, it just seems like the perfect bike for people that outsource their decision making to strangers on the internet.
