"Heads up parents. It’s about to get real This case is exploding—and people are taking sides. An Orange County mother is now facing MANSLAUGHT*R charges after prosecutors say her 14-year-old son—riding a high-powered electric motorcycle and allegedly popping wheelies—plowed into and killed an 81-year-old Vietnam veteran walking home from school. The victim, Ed Ashman, wasn’t just anyone. He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps captain who flew combat missions in Vietnam… and was working as a substitute teacher when his life was cut short. Investigators say the teen was riding a Surron Ultra Bee—basically a dirt bike disguised as an e-bike—IN THE STREET… UNLICENSED… and doing tricks… when he slammed into Ashman. And here’s where it gets even more shocking: 💥 Prosecutors say the teen RAN from the scene💥 The mother is accused of letting him ride illegally💥 She’s also accused of covering things up afterward Now the charges have been upgraded to felony involuntary manslaughter. She could be looking at over 7 YEARS in prison. So let’s talk about it— 👉 Is this a tragic accident… or criminal parenting?👉 Should a parent go to prison for what their kid did?👉 Or is this exactly the kind of accountability we need with these powerful “e-bikes” on our streets? A war hero is dead. A teenager’s future is on the line. And now a mother could lose her freedom. What is Justice in this Case?"
What say you all? I personally don't like the sheer #s of kids on these things (disclaimer: doing what I probably would have been doing) with total non situational awareness or consequences of what their group causes. Every day I'll see several groups consuming several lanes of a major road having fun blocking traffic.

We have a bigger problem with those electric scooters around me . The damn things will do 29 mph. I see kids all day long fly by with no helmet on ,blow through stop signs and just weave backend forth depending on where traffic is. I've seen kids riding 2 and even 3 up before . Im really suprised we dont see ore accidents .
TM, you are right I would have a blast on of those Surrons, the difference is that I (we?) would have kept it on the trails and not in the streets, well a little on the side streets and off to the side to get to the dirt trails... ...but not in traffic... ...this current crop of Surron'ers just want to be a nuisance and mess with adults on their daily pathways to work/errands.
...just my 2 cents...
As far as justice goes, a parent is responsible for a 14 year old's actions... ...tough pill to swallow. The local PD needs to crack down and start confiscating Surrons style e-bikes from teens.
It's become the normal around here. Where I see the difference is, when we were kids, we did not walk out in front of cars thinking WE had the right of way. The cars would kill us. We looked for cars before crossing the street, that carried over to a lot of other activities. I see so many kids with their nose in their phone and just walk out into the street expecting the CARS to stop for them. Many times they have ear buds in also and never even know/knew that a car stopped for them. The attitude has changed that whoever is in a car is responsible for everything. So no matter what you do, it's not your fault. How will this change?
TM
Where I grew up, till 16, pretty much your only option was the streets. But, we had respect for cars, they always had the right of way as they could kill us. Who here does not know of a friend or second friend that didn't get maimed or killed by a car? That had a lot of impact on us.

News report I watched this morning said she had been told numerous times what her kid was doing and that it was dangerous and she did nothing about it. News report also said the bike could go 60mph.
I'm not a fan in holding parents criminally liable for their kids actions as my step son was a handful to raise and did lots of stupid shit despite his mother and i disciplining consistently and doing our damndest to anticipate his next bad decision. But in this case if she provided him the bike and was told he was breaking the law on it....I dont know man... because I could see where this would go with school shootings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaBKm_cTRYE
The mom had been warned in the past. Guessing there's more to the back story on this kid and mom with the way they're coming after her.

We recently moved into a new house and the kid next door has a brand new suron. I walked over to check it out and he asked me if I wanted to try it out ,of course it was only in the street . I was impressed with the speed ,it would be wild to take one out in the dirt for a spin.
Surron & Talaria make 95% full sized bikes now. The Ultra Bee this kid had has roughly 28hp(21kw) and weighs about 190 lbs and that's stock. You can mod them to be as fast as a Stark.
I bought a Talaria Komodo to ride with my son offroad and it rips.
There does need to be regulation on them and the first step should be classifying them properly and adding the ability to plate them if for street use. That would solve most of the problems.
License to ride, plated, and insurance policy for them too. And a policy that ANY infraction, they get impounded! That would solve a lot of problems.
The ones I don't like is the little lawnmower engine bikes. They are so low to the ground that they get hidden behind cars. I always worry about running one of these sucker's over when they come out of nowhere
I say you should just take one for the team and run them over so they're not in my way next week.
That's sarcasm folks for those that can't tell!

I'm not "generally" a fan of holding parents responsible but to me it's the same thing as a person who lets their dog run free and it hurts someone or kills somebody elses dog. They are to blame. If she was warned about this then she deserves some kind of punishment. DA's love to overcharge though. It's one thing to ride these electric bikes in the street but these little fuckers ride em on the sidewalk around here. Same with the motorized scooters.
On the subject of electric bikes, I just had this pop up on Facebook. It’s phucking crazy! Looks like it happened somewhere in Spokane

I think some of these parents get lost on what's considered an E-bike and what's considered an E-motorcycle. California does have a name for them which is OCEV's Out of Class Electric Vehicles if they meet certain requirements. California also has a signed bill (California Bill No. 1271 (SEC.2312.5(d)), that specifically excludes OCEV's from being considered E-bikes.
So actually, this kid is no different from the wheelie boys riding on the streets with that Surron Ultra Bee. Might as well been riding 450 mx bike on the streets.
Edit: And if you modify your E-bike so it can go faster than 28mph it's no longer considered an E-Bike it's now an OCEV.
I started a thread about this very thing a month ago. ( Losing Control) It’s out of control and the police are not doing much about it. These kids have no business on any public roadway.
There’s a guy that rides my bus all the time and gets on with his scooter, he told me it weighs about 75 pounds. It has a huge battery. It’s actually really nice. I asked him how fast will it go. He told me it does 55 mph top speed and that they make some that do 85mph.
could handle it like this lady 😶

Spokane motherfucker...it's how we roll in the PNW bitch. 🙃
Pit Row
I’m sure she wishes she hadn’t done that. Holy cannoli!!!😳
No shit! I was there for the first time a few weeks ago for a wedding. Freaking beautiful area though the wedding was actually in Coeur d’Alene Idaho. Some of the nicest people I’ve ever spoken with.
Us Drysiders and Northern Idaho types are pretty chill, yes....unless we feel the need to do you a favor and run your punk ass kid over in a Ford Fiesta. 🙃
😂😂
There is a kid in our neighborhood who can wheelie his ebike like nobody’s business. I’m a little jealous!
A lot of these emoto manufacturers do make a street legal version that can be plated, but these punks all prefer the dirt bike models. They not only ride them out in the street , but also on bicycle paths and walking trails, sidewalks, etc. And then they get gangs of 50 or more and have these street takeovers just like the wheelie boyz.
I'm not either, but reportedly she was warned by the police (with bodycam footage) that the e-bile the kid was on is considered a motorcycle and it was illegal for the kid to be riding it on the street. She then apparently proceeded to do nothing whatsoever about it. She deserves the charges.
In Europe maybe. Chinese motorcycles do not come with a title or a standard 17 digit VIN which are required. Even if they have all of the "street legal" components you can't just register them and get a plate. In some states there are ways around it but not many.
What's in Utah's new e-bike law? – Deseret News
Looks like Utah just implemented a new law to address this.
This is a start, but imo it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Imo if you do not have a driver license you should not be on a public roadway period. No matter how fast a vehicle goes, if it’s powered by a battery or a 50cc or under motor, no one without a drivers license should be on the road. And no one should be on the roads without a helmet no matter your age. Jm2c
There are no helmet laws over 18 where I’m at.
That’s crazy, where are you from?
