Cole made a comment (forgot what podcast) that he was coming after the #17, but he also acknowledged Joey has it. If he choose 37, is he stuck with it or can he switch to 17 if Joey were to retire it?

Yes, he could switch if Joey gave it up.

Cole Davies did win a regional 250 sx championship and he will get to pick a career number.

I don’t know why you are getting downvoted. I have no idea who Cole Davis is

My Prop Market bet: he calls up Jeremy Martin and gets #6 for 2027.

He can’t do that unless he wins an outdoor 250 title of a 450 title, excluding SMX.

Cole won't get a permanent number unless he: wins 250 outdoors OR scores top 10 in combined 450/250 points overall. Rules are still the same, 250 regional gets you the 1E or W - and a lot of the time that rider scores top 10 in points over the whole season to get their two digit number - like Tom Vialle 2025

A regional title gets you a permanent two digit number like Mookie and Christian Craig have, same with Justin hill and the 46.

Townley ran the 101 when he was on the PC team.

What ya think Cole will choose?

He doesn’t need one yet does he? Yeah he won this Championship, but he’s still relatively new.

Joey was career #37 too, while Webb had career #17. Then after Webb won outdoors Joey switched.

The lack of three-digit career numbers is so stupid. They changed that rule ostensibly because they wanted people to have to run their earned numbers, like Hanny, but that's just for people who didn't score enough points. People who score enough should be able to go back to three. Those numbers look good on bikes and are way more unique.

I really hope he doesn’t. Nothing against Chizz but I have so many fond memories of that number running up front on the Emig and Lusk bikes in the 90s and early 00’.  I miss seeing it at the front of the field. Give it up Chizz. Let it go

Brayton did the same thing—held it an extra year for “McAdoo”, but that didn’t work out. I can’t remember who wanted it, but they chose something else.

If I’m not mistaken, a triple digit number is not allowed anymore as a permanent number, which is total BS

Yea thatd be a simple change they could make that would be awesome. Itd be bringing back an old school system too not changing what has always been.

As far as coles number id say stick with 37. Won his first championship with it.

Not this!👆

People argue/get confused on this rule every year! If he has a good outdoor series, those points combined with the ton of points he already has for winning the East coast SX title should easily put him inside the top 10 overall (both classes combined). If/when that happens he will get to choose a permanent two digit number (NOT a single digit - unless he wins the 250 MX title) But as of right now, he gets nothing.

BTW to be clear, all the guys like Nichols, Hill, Bogle, etc who keep getting mentioned did NOT get their permanent two digit # for winning their respective regional SX title that year. But again, the massive points they accumulated in order to win that, along with their outdoor points, got them inside the top 10 overall at the end of the season.

Saying it with confidence doesn’t make you correct. From the AMA Rulebook (note the circled part)…

Well that's embarrassing lol I stand corrected! Apologies.

IDK when they changed it, but for as long as there's been the permanent numbering system, that's been the rule (I.E. only top 10 overall combined, not east or west champs) But again, it's right there in black and white so apparently I missed that one somewhere along the way (that's what happens when you're out of the loop for a while I guess)

The rule I believe you are talking about is how Marchbanks received his career number. Top 10 in points.

Why can't he choose 17 if he is in the 250 class?

Also, as a kiwi with strong memories of Ben, I hope he petitions the AMA to run 101 as Cole has strong Townly ties too.

3 digit numbers always seemed to be assigned to foreign born riders which also ties in.

He can’t choose 17 because Savatgy already has it. 250 or 450 doesn’t matter, that's why you don't see redundant numbers between the classes (except #1 obviously).

Wasn't 101, and a couple of other 10*'s reserved for riders coming in from overseas?

I believe 100-109 are reserved for international riders competing for the first time in AMA competition.
