Feld is running a business not a charity. They shouldn’t give free entry to riders. Also, the phrase “way too expensive” is relative. If riders can’t afford it, don’t race. I don’t see the issue here.

In 1978, there were over 1000 AMA pros.  They ran out of numbers and had to add letters. Only one class in SX and three in outdoors.  One license for everything.  Picture is 1981, guess the venue. 508650472 30971580622441432 2749229718409761960 n

Without facts and data, you’re just another person with an opinion.

Boly is right, Feld is running a business. That’s a fact. How you support that business as a consumer is up to you.

I had a hunch it would dwindle when you had to be selected to race futures. I know a ton of pros who’ve applied to race futures, and the only one who got approved was a team owners son who didn’t make the cut in timed qualifying for the 20 man gate.

So you qualify for your first ever outdoor national in the 450 class and want to race futures to get your license? Tough crap. Your entry isn’t accepted. Battle with guys who race the 450 sx night show in one of the three Arenacross championships and want to race futures? Kick rocks. I’m told they ask the OEM’s and teams racing that class and 250’s who to allow in. No clue if that’s the case or just hearsay but it certainly seems to hold water.

Those are two VERY real circumstances that I’ve witnessed this year. I have no idea how to get a rider into futures without telling a parent to spend 100k to get them on a team that gets to race it. I think it’s by design, I can only think Feld wanted to thin the herd in groups B and C to limit track prep and damage, but that’s just a theory.

Let’s say you ARE a quick enough pro and want to try your hand at supercross, you are left with the random outdoor races to earn sx points, so drive to mini O’s, race a little backyard track with 40 training facility kids in a short sprint race, then load up and drive across the country to the AZ open and hope you can get the rest of your points. Oudman did just that this year and it was such a crazy story to travel and get it done he got a pulp mx interview in a podcast over it.  It’s a flawed system, but it feels intentional. If they want more entries (it doesn’t seem like they do) they should let one or all of the three legitimate AX series earn their riders points if they finish well enough. Same as they did for several years when Feld owned AX.

Dangit, don’t lump me in with him! 🤣

But in all seriousness, it’s affecting the entries, but based on them cutting free practice to save the track and track crew, maybe that was a goal of theirs? The kids who become household names are still getting in though, so please don’t think I have a tin foil hat on.

Only 13 XC1 racers and 10 XC2 entries at the Talledaga GNCC today… that’s a total joke.

Only 37 450 entries in Indy.

In 2025 there were 52!! (It wasn’t a triple crown)

There should be a rule that if you do not make a main within 3 years of racing, you get your supercross license pulled. Anybody who can't cut it should go race arenacross. Arenacross could be a viable way for a lot of this guys to make a living.

I will never understand why, at the highest level of SX and MX, privateers are even allowed to race.

Because "privateer" means different things to different people. In the purest sense, it means without factory support. Should Club hang it up? Tedder? Quad Lock is just now getting some factory parts at least partly due to Jett being out, should they fuck off as well?

Pure privateers have zero business at the highest level. I don't watch the NFL to have one team basically be local walk ons because by some miracle of miracle they happen to have a "pro" license. Now, I am talking a true privateer. Like when the local pro's get involved. But, overall, I am not a huge fan of any team that is not factory supported.

what about QBs in the NFL being "walk ons" as you call it.

Look up Kurt Warner.

Warner is kind of an anomoly. He played for pro teams...arena ball and overseas I think. He was not just just dude who walked off the street. He simply was un-drafted in the 90's. He played college ball. He got hurt from my memory during his pro career B4 the NFL. But, he played in the NFL for a PRO team. He wasn't on some funky team that happened to play against an NFL team.

Almost like those local pros and privateers raced amateur nationals and regional pro races and didn’t just walk off the street onto a SX track…

No but half of them shouldn't be there. Some of these guys have been at it for 10 years and never made a main. Nobody is showing up to watch guys ride around and roll the track after 2 laps of a heat race. The tracks will last longer and the racing will be better with less guys out there.

At what point do you have to prioritize what actually makes money and keeps the machine going and its not the 15th-22nd place battles.

When you walk around the pits and see the people spending a lot of money to go to the races they are wearing Tomac, Roczen and Cooper Webb shirts, they aren't wearing Moranz, Harlan and Harrison shirts....No Offense.

No different than comparing the Yankees utility infielder that spends half his year in the minors to Aaron Judge.

All sports are very top heavy. Supercross is no exception. It doesn’t change the fact that these privateers are still better than 99.99% of the other riders in the world.

10 man gates are the solution. Implement it now. If you have to crowd fund or utilize go fund me to go racing you have failed. Time to get a job and try something new. Nobody cares about anyone getting 14th.

There’s a race and you’re not in it.

10 man gates at A1 will be a 5 man gate (if we are lucky) by SLC. Sounds like a great idea.

What do you suggest for the nationals? Cutting the track in half and running 1 60 minute moto?

Or, base it on a % of the fastest qualifier in order to make the night show (heat races). People (pro's) shouldn't be getting lapped in a 15 lap race. That's not racing...that's riding where you don't belong and getting in the way of those that do. Just because you have a pro license, that doesn't mean you should race at the pinnacle of the sport.

We could just overlay the LitPro of their fast laps, then we won't have any lappers or Prado blocking to contend with. Is that what you guys want?

So what does the term "growing the sport" really mean?  Gettinf rid of privateteers seems the opposite. And seems pretty often a privateer does beat a factory rider.

Maybe the fix is in qualifying, limit it to 3 seconds off the fastet time.  So everybody had an opportunity to qualify and keeps the speed competitive in the nite show, smaller gates for sure.
