Obviously getting into the "_ is the modern equivalent of _" is an overdone conversation but I just can't help seeing it.
Both guys have that blue-collar, workmanlike approach to racing. Show up, put in the laps, let the results talk. Both were top names in their era without necessarily being the flashiest personalities in the pits. Stanton's three 250 titles in the early 90s came from just being so consistently fast and gnarly, and Tomac's career has followed a similar pattern. Both feel like they bulldog the bike into keeping forward momentum. Plus there's something about the Colorado/Michigan roots that feels really similar.
I've recently gone down a youtube rabbit-hole watching McGrath's professional career from start to finish and the Stanton/McGrath transition is a little bittersweet. I'm stoked that we have Eli out still putting a hurtin' on the premier class frequently because he coulda just as easily packed it up and called it a career well spent years ago now.

Not arguing with that, but in 2017 I wrote an article for the Huffington Post about why Tomac was almost exactly like Damon Bradshaw and how that season almost directly mimicked the 1992 SX season with Bradshaw vs. Stanton with a Frenchman sprinkled in there (Bayle). Only it was Tomac vs. Dungey with a different Frenchman sprinkled in there (Musquin).

But Tomac's impressively long career has allowed him to reinvent himself more than once. In my view, he's definitely been Stanton-eque at times, but also MC, RC, Stew, Bradshaw, Hannah, Larocco...
John Tomac is from Michigan also.

Not saying you already do, but when/if you get a Lawrence tattoo where you thinking? Small of back or forearm? (Joking of course - sort of 😁)
Ok. Gotta ask... what are you trying to say with your pictures of hunter lawrence cumming champagne on his mechanic?
Stanton never had the top end speed that Tomac has and Tomac took a long time to become as mentally tough as Stanton and he probably still isn't there. Once Jeff got on Factory Honda he was instantly a champion without ever being the fastest guy. Until Eli won his first SX Championship he was known for having "Weirdo Eli Races" and no one ever said that about Jeff.
The better comparison is the competition between two riders of each era.
Stanton/Bradshaw

I always saw Dungy and Stanton as being similar.
Something I've noticed about Stanton is he doesn't get much respect from the average moto fan. If someone talks about great 80's racers, it's RJ and the 90's are owned by MC. Most average fans don't realize what a gnarly accomplishment 6 titles in 4 years is. That being said when you see Stanton in a group of other great racers they really respect what he did. Even guys that are pretty outgoing like Villo shuts up when 6-Time talks.
I never thought of Stanton having blazing speed.
Wife said Ernest T Bass. Once you see it you can’t unsee it. Ugh…sorry Eli.
Jeff Stanton does not remind me of Eli Tomac at all.
Probably in part because his era was kind of that transition from RJ to MC. Stanton was the man for a couple years, but it was the end of the 80s into the early 90s so he doesn't come to mind as having dominated for as long of a period as either of them.
I have always been a fan. I liked his workmanlike approach, and he seemed down to earth. The battles with Bradshaw were great years.
Stanton was boring as hell.
Tomac, definitely not.
I think 6 time's top end speed is underrated. Yes, in SX he was not as top end fast as Bradshaw and Bayle, but outdoors he was as fast as anyone at that time. And some of his MXDN rides are legendary for his speed. He was gnarly no doubt.
Stanton hugely benefited from getting an HRC ride at the time. Eli has been pretty much the same guy his entire career, minus his weirdo races which he has now publicly attributed to arm pump from getting bike setup wrong. To me, Eli has proven that he can be on any bike and win.
Their demeanor definitely is similar though, so I agree with you there.
Hahaahahahahahahahahaha

Big fan of both of these guys. I’m 41, so a lot of my moto memories come just after Stanton was in the spotlight, but being a student of the sport, he ranks very high regardless.
I also live on the Michigan state line, and was a huge LaRocco fan, and Stanton admirer too.
Cool story, a couple years ago at a Log Road non current race, my class had first drop, and the class Stanton ran was second drop. He was on an older CR125. He caught and blew past me on the last lap, narrowly missing sawing my front wheel off in a left hander. He looked back as he was passing to be sure he missed me by an inch, was almost like slow motion- so cool. We were parked by him that day and he comes over for a high five and a few minutes of bench racing just like the normal dude that he is.
I am willing to bet in the years down the road after Eli is retired we’d see the same normal guy attitude from him too. Legends. And good dudes.
hunter is stanton. tomac is the first of his name.
