Yup, 'Swervin Mervin'.

In the 80s / the early 90s, he was quite infamous for his way of riding.

From what I'd read in TMX / Dirt Bike Rider and other Brit mags, he was not that popular with quite a few fellow riders.

Here's a ( Jack Burnicle ?) pic of Merv and Thorpe at the 1985 Farleigh GP. Featured in robgvx's fantastic book. Dave did an epic recovery from this, by the way.

Rob could perhaps, shed some light on if Merv really was the 'villain' I recall him being reputed to be .

I recall also Merv creating quite  few kerfluffles during Max's younger years, both in Britain and the USA.

Max did a lot of travelling / racing as a youngster, and, he's been doing so for many years now. Good on him, I say.

Max has not lived up to Mervs 'legend'.

Kid has been racking up bad Karma for years. It will catch up with him. Always does. I used to despise J law and his unsportsmanlike like attitude and still get the warm and fuzzies when I think about how his career went vs Dungeys.

I’d never wish an injury on any rider.  Don’t want to see any of them get hurt ever.

That being said I’m really surprised that with Deegans riding style and the number of bonehead moves he’s made on other riders that he’s only had 1 broken collar bone in his 4(?) years as a pro.  He has taken out numerous riders without much consequence other than Levi?? And escaped injury multiple seasons with a few hard crashes

Eli was in the same position with Roczen. Eli checked and rode smart. Deegs was coming and Max knew it or should have. That's racing. Deegs didn't do anything wrong. Max needs to be more aware and adjust.

if mcadoo had been taken out of the series once again, action would have been taken to curtail deegs antics. that's undeniable. too many teams with too much invested. its going to take someone getting seriously hurt for something to get done. for the people that say this is soft or we're karens or whatever, you're ok with street justice instead then right?

several years ago, i used to think barcia deserved karma, but i felt horrible for him last week regardless and clearly he's grown a prefrontal cortex sometime in the last couple years. im not so sure deegs will ever get there and im not entirely certain i would (will?) feel the least bit bad when he gets broke off (to use his dad's phrase) by someone he's alienated in the past.

I think his dad and mechanic encourage his punk ass mentality that there’s no balance.  Most people get back to the truck and at least a couple people are like “cmon bro”.  The kid is applauded for it and plans it meticulously.

I REALLY  hope Max returns the treatment and punts Deegan over a berm causing him to lose a ton of positions.

I don't want to see anyone get injured though.

Max will be a legend if he snaps a tib/fib on DangerDouche. I'll start a GoFundMe for him if he does it.

Max will be a legend if he finds a little extra speed, smokes him straight up and snatches the title away

I was stood on a van roof behind the fence where that happened, to be fair, it was just a first turn deal, Merv got a good jump and wanted to make the best of it, was one of the most awesome moments in GP racing , and being there to see and hear it was something i wont forget.

I raced Merv as a kid ( well lined up with) and he always gave everything , right up to when he retired. I was lucky enough to catch up with him at a British MX Champs race this year, and had a nice chat, he is coaching some 125 guys, and enjoying the odd outing on a KTM500 in Vets races, where he still kicks my arse.

No doubt Deegan will do worse if he continues to go unchecked. He already broke Schock's collarbone, tried to injure Kitchen and Shimoda at SMX, and his crossjump last week on McAdoo could've been much worse.

I find it interesting that everyone accepts motocross is a dangerous sport with these inherent risks, and Deegan can go out there and cause injury, but anyone who says he deserves it back is going too far.

You forgot landing on Ryder while cutting a corner of the track

The amount of hypocrisy in this thread is off the charts.
This place needs a big dose of testosterone and for somebody to take the tampon dispenser out of the men’s room.

Not a Deegan fan, but I think he came in a little hotter than he expected and rode up high on the berm; Anstie was yielding the position but there wasn’t enough room. What was dumber was there was plenty of time and Deegan had him covered. Kitchen, however, didn’t have time and looked more deliberate, but still OK because racing. After listening to Max’s awkward podium speech as he watched the Jumbotron and struggled to avoid directly saying he’d retaliate, I don’t think this will happen again.

That was totally unnecessary. Max conceded the spot knowing Deegs had more pace and maybe he was hoping for a tow to find a way back around him, or taking the 2nd which he would have easily, but no, Deegan had to be a douche about it. And a supposed teammate too. SMH. If Max didn't know where he stood with Deegan, he knows now. As George Bush Junior famously once said, "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...well you aren't going to fool me again" or something close to that!

How many on track incidents has deegan been involved with???

Don't know how many, but sliding his rear wheel into someone's front to take them out seems to be his signature move. More subtle than a blantant t-bone, and safer for him. He had the inside line and plenty of room to pass Anstie clean. Even Diffey mentioned it on the broadcast when he did it. RC had no comment at all.

Unnecessary by Haiden. Max only has 3-4 good races in him before he starts looking for a way out. He's not a championship threat.

Yep. Only Friese is actually a nice guy behind the scenes, Doucheboy is an ass on and off the track.

Have you seen the Irish Blokes ( I've gone blank on the sites name - I've been up for near on 48 hours, trying to finish off  a Ducati Swingarm I'm modifying - I get overly obsessed with jobs, at times )  - interview with Max?

During it, Max mentioned something along the lines that his Dad wanted to get riding with him ( Max) , and  rough him up...... 🤣

PS - with your background, would you know what happened with  Jarred Smith - he was a privateer in GPs and Brit series that did pretty well for some years. Injuries? Well, Old Age of course by now, if he's still with us, as that happens to all of us. Was he the rider that had Thorpes Ex Works engines in his bike(s) that got stolen out of his van when on The Continent?

Yes, that '85 GP prang was just racing, but I read, so many times, "Merv The Swerv" / "Swervin' Mervin Anstie", that there had to be something behind  those monikers ........ 😁

Max has his mother's temperament.  Not a criticism, an observation.

That happens sometimes in life.  The father is a firebrand and marries a more passive person.  The children will usually have the temperament of one of the parents.

gtfo no one hates Deegan more than me, but Jesus fucking christ don't put Friese on his level.

Friese makes a god damn living racing dirtbikes and getting results and wearing eyeliner. He knows he's not fast but god damn start upfront blend in.

Guys also has 3 250SX podiums most recent being 2nd in 22

Friese has no choice but to be a tool bag as its how makes a living, Deegan has a choice. But this Max incident, wasn't anything to bitch about.
