The Cost of Jerseys and Pants in 2025

I have always been someone who has bought last season's closeout or sale gear. I've also used some of the MSR gear for a bit now as well. However, I have never been cheap with anything else like a helmet, goggles, and boots.  As I am looking for some early Black Friday deals, I am in disbelief on the costs of some sets now. Over $300 for one set of One Industries, Fox, or Alpinestars now!? I am fine with the gear I have now, I am curious if anyone has these expensive sets of gear, and if they can give feedback. I want to know if there is something special about them, or if they are just expensive for the brand name.

Closeout gear deals usually hit around July or August. That's when I buy. New prices are crazy.

Inflation is real and moto gear is definitely way overpriced. If I didn’t have connections for deep discounts, I would have a tough time justifying the current cost to purchase new gear.

Part of this problem, is the gear companies paying out millions to the riders to wear their gear. While I’m happy for the riders to be pulling in 7 figures, it has really taken a toll on the average Joe, purchasing gear for him and his kids. I can’t imagine how Alpinestars or Fox can turn a profit, with the money they put out in rider salaries.
Deegan just signed a $10,000,000.00 deal, how much gear has to be sold at full retail in order to recover just his salary ? Add on Roczen and all the other Fox athletes and it’s crazy they can turn a profit.
Alpinestars has to be the absolute king of salaries… with so many different Motorsports athletes being paid BIG money and the hundreds, maybe thousands, of athletes that they pay to wear their gear, I can’t imagine that they are profitable.
Have you priced a new high end helmet lately ? They are now in the $1000 range after tax and shipping even with a discount, it’s expensive !

The more expensive gear is certainly better quality, but I find it's mostly in terms of fitment and not durability. I race primarily off-road and I destroy pants and jerseys. No chance I'm spending that kind of coin on gear. If you're primarily on the track and don't have to worry about rogue pine tree limbs and 5 hours of race wear on the knees I would maybe go that direction.

I bought Carhartt overalls to ride in this summer. Durable cotton duck and they only cost $90. I’m sure I will get 15+ years out of them.

Cost of doing business has gone up, whether that's paying the design team, sourcing overseas, or paying athletes. I will say, grabbing a brand's high-end pant/jersey and comparing it to their entry level, there is a massive difference in technical features and fit. I have experience in all the brands you mentioned. Gear has never vented better and fit better than today. Looks are subjective. If you can snag a deal on the previous year's generation, go for it! The gear companies are not having any issues moving through product though. You can see the latest kits any given weekend at the track.

Fox and Alpinestars each pull in over $200mil a year in revenue. Plus, people are buying their products all over the world. They wouldn't pay those athlete salaries if they weren't turning a profit, but then again I'm not combing over their financial reports either.

MX gear is expensive.  I can’t make myself pay full boat for current Fox or Alpinestars.  I buy closeout gear, year or two old.  Nobody cares or knows in most cases how current your pants and Jerseys are.  I can typically find Moose Sahara for a decent price and it’s good gear for hot and humid Houston Texas area.  For cool weather gear I can find O’Neal Element or Fly F16 for cheap.  The O’Neal stuff I bought for cheap Walmart.com is 3 years old and looks good enough for this old slow guy.

I even go cheap on helmets, not cheap quality but I buy last years or later models on closeout.  I have a Fly Racing Formula S scheduled to be delivered today, paid $439 before tax with free shipping.  It was last years model marked down from just south of 900.  Lots of places now have Formula S helmets marked down to around 450 or so.

About the only thing I didn’t get for cheap were knee braces I bought last year to replace my old ones.  I had to pay a tick north of 800 for the best EVS braces.  Bought them direct from EVS, marked down from a 1000.  Not a screaming deal but a decent price.

I have a never worn pair of Leatt 5.5 boots, black bottoms with white tops on the shelf in the garage.  Good looking quality boots I bought a couple years back for 169 bucks direct from Leatt.  Also bought a Leatt Helmet for a back up last year direct from Leatt last year for cheap.  It’s a 3.5 or 4.5 can’t recall and it’s Dot and ECE .06 rated.  It came with a really good set of Leatt googles to boot.  I think I paid 140 for helmet and googles.  I’d guess it’s as good as the Bell 9 MIPS I’ve been wearing the last few years.

I have way too bikes in the garage and way too much MX gear lol.  But I retired and trying to have fun while I can.

Hell I guess I’d buy a freight train if it was on sale, maybe a bridge too!

I am a big harescramble guy so I am in the same boat as you. Pants blow apart regardless of what brand I am wearing.

Fly and Leatt have great deals most definitely. I picked up a Leatt 9.5 helmet around last Christmas for over half off. I have trashed knees so I run custom CTI knee braces. I will pay full price for every piece of protective gear besides jerseys and pants. I just don't get it haha

It costs a lot of money for an AI design subscription and freight from Taiwan to bring it from the sweatshops.

Add in money to the sponsored riders and other marketing expenses, and there's barely enough left for the CEO's. Next year they'll have to choose between a Yacht or that 3rd house, the wife isn't going to like being told no to one of those; and she's already banging the pool guy and the general contractor doing the kitchen renovation, so the ice is thin.

I was looking at the moose racing overalls yesterday and they seem identical to the carhartt ones. I ride in carhartt overalls in the winters when its snowing to stay dry, people think its crazy but it's a really good concept.

I'm in the same boat, I ride desert and mesquite bushes and thorny branches destroy gear. I ran tried Klim Dakar gear and it was good. But not great with knee braces, super tight and restrictive for me. Fly Patrol gear has worked better for me, but it seems off road gear is an afterthought for everyone.

Also nothing is more frustrating than grazing your nice new pants on a hot exhaust pipe and melting them.

I use to love my fly f16 stuff. Affordable and durable. Over the years they have tried to make the pants lighter and this has hurt the durability. I don’t need light breathable pants, just jersey.  I just ordered a set of O’Neal. Curious to see the durability of the cheap O’Neal stuff I bought.

A "value meal" at McDonald's is $20...a car battery is $300...a mid cut of steak is $12.99 a pound at the grocery store...Dollar Tree has nothing in their stores for $1....and....moto gear is ridiculously expensive....

After taking 15 years off to start a family, ect.. looking at the cost of gear, I'm glad the last O'neal set I had still fits. A little mousey smelling from being in the shed, but I'll run it! Does anyone still use leather for knee abrasion resistance?

Surprising, the Thor set was starting to fall apart, almost bio-degrading LOL

I’ll check the TLD site for gear on sale quite often. Usually for friends that’re getting into moto/just starting out. I’m often getting them “head to toe” for less than $500 often more like $300.

Helmet (SE5 composite to SE poly $387-$180)   $180

Pant -  (GP to SE…$75-$120)                              $  75

Jersey (GP)                                                          $  25

Gloves (Flow)                                                       $  18

Total                                                                     $298 (all black…head to toe…looks pretty cool, too!)

Got a friend in gear for his 1st race…SE5 composite helmet w/ red-wht-blue SE Honda gear…air glove…$583 all in…that’s $100 less than what the helmet originally sold for…JUST the helmet! 🤣

We find great goggles on sale for $30-50 and often including tear-offs or a spare lens. Boots…$200-400…all on sale and all great values. This time of year you can find all sorts of deals if you go lookin’.

Good luck!

Intrinsic value.

But honestly as soon as I start my bike I never think about what I'm wearing, only thing on my mind is keeping the rubber side down.

Crazy how so many riders have stockholm syndrome. Lotta you guys would stick up for this industry if it wanted your firstborns.

I purchased a set of the techstar stuff last year on a sale and its okay. Honestly the best gear I have is my fox 180 kit that I got for less than $100 shipped. Pants fit great, dont move around. The prices in this sport are nuts.

Best I can tell the O’Neal Element holds up really good.  It’s kinda thick and hot as hell but it can be bought cheap.  What I ride in the during winter here in Southeast Texas……what little winter we have.  As soon as I say it we’ll be down to 14 degrees come January like a couple years back and I’ll be planing trees again in the spring LOL.

3-4 years back I caught some MSR sets on sale for cheap.  Like 30-40 bucks, pants, jersey and gloves on closeout.  I bought 36, maybe a few 38’s pants and XL jerseys.  I bet I bought 4-5 sets.  Then cause of the Beer and BBQ diet I was on, bulked up to over 240.  Then lost down to 205 last year.  Between the gym and putting a few pounds back on I’m at 215.  I’m wearing 34’s now,

I need to get that box out with all the MSR sets I bought and see if any fit.  I’m not sure I ever wore any of them, bet they are all still new.

Klim is really the only thing I've used in the desert that lasts. Expensive and you definitely look "off road" and not moto, but worth it for how long it lasts. XC Lite pants are heavy in a good way, the materials remind me of gear from like 2005 that just seems to hold up better.

I started my small company Asagiwear and have kept, in my opinion, a low retail on a full set of lightweight gear with sublimated name and number and includes gloves for $199 retail, plus I have all sizes.

I have seen lot of other smaller companies like me ( probably bigger then me still ) charging 300-400 dollars for a set of gear, but then they offer anyone and there brother 30-50% off, so I think they get mor sales from " sponsoring " people, but those people don't realize there paying my retail even after there discount LOL.

But yeah gear can be crazy, especially boots and helmets and even goggles.

I am currently trying to see if I can find another supplier to make me a more basic set of pants and jersey for a lower cost so I can have a cheap option, but so far havent found that for the small quantities I would order.

I usually buy 1 (low end) kit each year (120€ max). Maybe 2 or 3 jerseys during the year mainly from Aliexpress (7-9€ each).

I have a couple kits that i use when condition sucks/i'm riding in dirt that stains the gears. This kits have been needleworked from my mom many times, LOL. I mainly break them around knees or butt checks.
