This is the biggest misconception in motocross, that the top Euros don't make money. You’re high AF if you think Kay is making less than a 15 place supercross rider. He’s in the same neighborhood as some of the top 250 guys here.

I know that Prado took a cut to come here. I know that when Herlings was in his prime, he was the highest paid mx rider at KTM, including Dungey and Webb.

The top GP guys are in the range as most of the top American guys. The drop happens after the top 5. The big advantage is the Americans have three titles that pay big money, the Euros have one.

Figured in 15' when dungey won both titles, would have been more than that with bonuses and salary.

His salary was higher than Dungeys. Dungey won 2 mill in bonus alone.

I remember somewhere back in 2017-2018 there was an interview with Pit Beirer on Herlings contract extension where he said that Herlings is now in a range with Cairoli and Dungey, but I've never seen any interview or numbers where someone said he's making more than them.

Last year Herlings said this though: “The MXGP bonus for the teams are way lower…you could make easily 6 or 7 million a year I guess (winning everything in AMA), I don’t see any MXGP rider making up to 6/7/8 million. (In 2018) I think I made 4.5 million, that’s everything included.” And I think in 2018 he won every race but two.

There is money for the absolute top guys in MXGP, yes. They don't go to the US just for money, they want to ride supercross and live the american dream though I think. I don't think Prado for example makes more in the US in his first year with some podiums than winning the MXGP title this year.

He'll get there , guys used to have to actually learn whoops, but now that the tracks are easier than A1 year 2000, less of a curve.

Dont forget who Kay has in his corner helping him. Ruben who used to be the one who help Herlings win all his races and championships. Ruben was also around when townley moved to the USA and learned SX at Rickys. Ruben doesn’t get the credit he deserves for all he does behind the scenes for his riders.

From a track perspective, this is unfortunate.  Even the riders dislike the current tracks…

But yes, Kay will get better over time.  However, just like almost all rookies in SX, the whoops will be an an adventure in year 1.

Wonder if he's going back to the US now. A flight over 10 hours could be from Amsterdam to LAX:

Well, with JuJu out, I think Kay can fill in nicely. Not sure how how it works with Husky and KTM, maybe move Ryder D over to KTM and let Kay stay on the white bike?

It’s a tough career move. Granted, he’s only 21 years old, but changing continents is no joke. It’s a whole new way of life. That in itself is just as much of a challenge as racing. If there’s more money to be made, then it might be worth it, but if there’s not, why do it? There’s also a bigger risk of injury with Supercross and racing here in the US in general.

I dont think he is making the move permanently just yet. JuJu will likely be back for outdoors. I can see Kay coming over, doing most of the West Coast rounds then head back home and get that title back ala Roczen.

He's moving up to the 450 next season, so I'd be really surprised if he raced a 250 in SX when he should be testing his 450 for the upcoming GP season. Especially because the GPs start earlier than usual this year.

I think he will do what he did last year. Just ride some SX for a couple of weeks.

Watched de Wolfe at the MXON and I have to say he has style and speed.  I think with some additional SX work he could do well in the US.  (But you'd think whoever is picking up the tab for him to come here for the winter could put him in biz class for a 10 hour flight)!

Prado was there as well. Looked really, really good today. There was one pass through the whoops where he looked fully out of control and just wheel-tapped his way out of it. Pretty cool. De Wolf wasn’t hitting the whoops and looked like he was just easing back into it.
