Thoughts on tomac getting a cable at KTM?

What’s the chances tomac gets a factory cable clutch for his KTM in 2026? If sexton can get KYB’s, and In 2003 MXGP’s, smets ran a factory cable clutch on his 450 and 550. So it wouldn’t be the first time and I don’t think it would breach any US production rules.

All he needs is a throttle cable.

I have no idea what they can or will or won’t do…. But I’d suggest they will work on the hyd clutch to get him more of the feel he wants first.  What all can be done there??

I’m pretty sure it was a demand he had before signing that they do in fact intend to meet.

Just like when McGrath went to Suzuki , he got upside down forks which the other factory suzuki riders had been wanting and could not get

MC’s forks on his Zuk were off his Honda in his garage. He would carry them from race to race. ET ran hydraulic on the 19 plus Kaw. KTM has all sorts of pieces and parts for their hydraulic clutch setup. The Enduro and off road teams customize the clutch for the riders. Until his new bike is seen in the pits. Hard to say what the system will have.

I look at Reeds privateer 22 success and wonder why Tomac doesn’t do that on a Yamaha. I can’t believe that it is about money this late in his career. The KTM must really be everything he wants and the best bike choice anyways. That would make sense.

KTM was the last factory choice for Tomac, I doubt it is everything he wants, especially after seeing Chase on it this year. The 22 route is wayyy too expensive for Tomac who’s just trying to race for another 2 years imo.

Building your own team from the ground up is a huge endeavor, so I’m not surprised Tomac would rather go with an experienced, operating team, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

At the end of SX no one ever looked better on an SX bike then Chase did.

The end of outdoors and SMX made me forget about how he looked in sx 🤣🤣 and no one’s ever looked better then James on a sx track, let’s be real.

IF Tomac wants a cable clutch, I don’t think it’d be a big deal for KTM to give it to him. This isn’t 1999 when hydraulic clutches were an exotic KTM thing.

Yes, Webb will vouch to that.

Is a cable clutch cheaper? If so, I'm sure KTM will have no issues, easier on the budget 😁

I think he’ll adapt to the KTM hydraulic clutch. End of story.

Also I don’t believe Tomac has the same burning desire to make people eat crow as Chad Reed does. CR22 had an innate ability to shove it up people’s ass by proving them wrong, and he enjoyed doing so.

In an issue of racer x a few months ago, the little section where they ask several riders the same question, tomac’s response to “what is the most gimmicky item in motocross” was “hydraulic clutches.” Thought it was ironic based off where we knew he was headed, but who knows when they actually asked the question versus published it.

Well Chase obviously didn't share that feeling. If he was confident of that, plus the memories of outdoors '24, then '26 could have potential to win both? Chase obviously wasn't as confident in his KTM as you thought he looked.

Can they give him a cable clutch? Yes, absolutely. The way KTM has their salve cylinder laid out, they could easily give him a cable actuated clutch. Will they give it to him? No one knows. We will soon find out but i think hell be just fine on a hydraulic clutch. For example, see 2019 Kawi.

Having ridden with cable clutches forever and now having a KTM hydro, other than a lighter pull it sure feels like a cable clutch. I think Eli will be fine.

Will they let Tomac pull wire?

The thing with hydraulic clutches is that if you’re a clutch abuser, (enter Eli), it doesn’t give you the same warning that it’s on the way out, or adjustability to respond, that a cable clutch does. That’s why this is a subject of discussion.
