This idea developed while watching these guys ride at MXdN. If you pay attention to each of these riders style on the bike its a perfect image of two complete opposite sides of the spectrum, yet they both find a way to be incredibly fast.
Jett is very playful on the bike and when I watch him it looks "fun" like damn it makes me want to ride. Eli on the other hand, looks like its just a grind. He looks like a dude who just punched the clock and is going to just grind out the next 30 mins, but do it VERY well. Hammers through everything, on the clutch, puts his full weight into the ruts, etc.
I just have never seen a visual representation of two COMPLETELY different ways to ride a dirtbike extremely well on the track at once.
Agreed, but I wouldn't say they are opposite extremes. Neither rider represents the extreme opposite of the discipline.
Earlier in the summer someone posted a video demonstrating their different approaches on corner entry at Hangtown, it was pretty eye opening
Windham vs RC washougal 2001 is a masterclass of styles.

RV2 and RD5 always comes to mind when this comes up. Dungey was so smoothy and calculated on the bike and then you had RV out there with the weekend warrior riding technique. The two different styles worked out pretty darn good for those two also.

Except…. One way of skinning the cat is better than the other, no? (There is only one winner)
Jett = Gazelle
Eli = Bulldog
Eli looks intense while Jett looks more relaxed. Eli looks fast - insanely fast. Jett is deceptively fast. The closer you look at Jett’s technique the more impressive it is.
One is skinning the cat at age 22 while the other is 32
Everts and RC…
RV and Dungey were total opposites as well, and both absolute badass styles
what a cool fuckin' sport we get to be a part of
Yeah, but one cat gets finished being skinned first (and comes out cleaner).
Bailey and Johnson
Pourcel and Barcia..
Hannah and Smith
JMB vs Stanton
All I know is I never want this noise behind me in a moto haha
That’s fair..
Lmaooo bro I literally knew you would come in here and mention how old Eli is unprovoked😂😂
Pit Row
Just as I knew you would reply with your “aGe is jUsT a nUmBeR” bs
Jo looking back as if to say “wtf is that?!” Is cracking me up.
To me, Eli is fun to watch ride...Jett isn't.
To each his own. Especially in person, Jett is mind blowing. I could watch him ride alone all day and be endlessly entertained
"Where the fuck is he? How does it sound everywhere?" haha
Jo hearing Tomac behind him revving the bejeezus out of the Yamaha: “you mad bro?”
He'd have to be paid by the agents for athletes reaching retirement age to post that, or unable to process information. It's pretty well established that starting around the age of 25 you have a decline in cardiac output leading to less oxygen to the muscles. It just gets worse from there. Normal people may not notice because they aren't maxed out like to level athletes until much later, but in MX? Yeah Tom Brady got wiser which helped extend his career, but that doesn't mean his body was as capable.
Who does? Always these "facts" but never any athletes chime in or do the details get revealed. Where are these professionals that start declining? Kipchoge is 40, your last TDF winners were upper 20's.
I've never met anyone that persisted in hardcore lifestyle training that hit a wall at 30. As I say every thread, just because you may have washed up with kids and a job doesn't mean Eli Tomac is walking in your shoes.
Feel free to review these studies and debunk the findings.
Brandt et al. (1951) - Changes in Cardiac Output with Age
Hawkins et al. (2021) - Age effects on exercise tolerance
Fleg et al. (2005) - Cardiovascular aging and heart failure
McPhee et al. (2017) - Skeletal muscle mitochondria and aging
Your citation of the Hawkins study compared geriatric patients with young adults.
This is embarrassing. I’ll keep working through these and update this post as I go.
Studies need funding, age related illness is one of the largest areas of concern so of course that demographic will be of concern.
They divided 71 people up in two groups. One group had 43 people age 20 to 32, the other had 28 participants 58 to 72. It then cited work by Fleg to justify this. Fleg's work shows the non linear decline starting early. This study quantified the difference in the extremes, and cited other works for the starting point.
Two totally different bike setups, mentality, and overall both are just awesome to watch. I called into pulp a month or so ago and asked Keefer about Jett’s settings and what it allows him to do on the track. Keefer’s thoughts on his bike setup having ridden it were interesting as it is a softer setup that ramps up ⬆️ in the stroke where Eli is more initial firmness on the rear and softer front end. Cool stuff.
