Mike was always better on a big bore, even when he was very young. Whoevers idea it was to use him to debut the 350f made a mistake. It would be nice to see him back on a 450, which he rides well, for 2011 since they now have other top level riders to ride the 350.

Why is it that Mike has a problem?

As sad as it is, there is only one winner in this sport we all love. That doesn't make those who finish behind the winner, some type of loser.

Mike is doing fine.
Well said! Amazing how often both Mike & KTM get ragged on here. People seem to forget the solid season in the 450 Outdoor Nationals. Yeah, maybe he or the 350 were off the pace a bit plus some top contenders (mainly Reed & RV) were missing, but still very competitive.

450 Class Final Championship Standings for 2010

1. Ryan Dungey, Belle Plaine, Minn., Suzuki, 543 (2010 450 MX Champion)
2. Brett Metcalfe, Australia, Honda, 398
3. Andrew Short, Smithville, Texas, Honda, 393
4. Ben Townley, New Zealand, Honda, 321
5. Mike Alessi, Victorville, Calif., KTM, 314
6. Kyle Chisholm, Valrico, Fla., Yamaha, 266
7. Josh Grant, Riverside, Calif., Yamaha, 260
8. Ryan Sipes, Vine Grove, Ky., Yamaha, 234
9. Kyle Regal, Kemp, Texas, Honda, 224
10. Nick Wey, Dewitt, Mich., Kawasaki, 223

Mike's doing fine, if he wasn't so freaking dominant his whole life.
But Mike grew up winning, just like RC and JS7. Ricky and James were able to transfer that success, Mike hasn't. Yet again, Few have.

Ya it may just be Mike AND the 350 rather than one or the other. Some people just don't work well with certain bikes. I mean nobody is talking about how it's Kawasaki's fault that Reed had the worst season of his career this year. The KXF works well for RV but as soon as Reed leaves the Suzuki and rides the green bike, he goes without one single SX win, 1 outdoor moto win (ironically in the same race where Mike got his only moto win), and didn't even race either full series. Is it that the KXF killed his season? No, the bike and team around him just didn't work out for him. I think it may be the same kind of deal for Alessi. KTM has been in a sort of transition phase here in the US and while I don't know all the ins and outs of what was going on with the team and how that effected Alessi's mentality, I think it's a little premature to say that the bike is his problem. Look at it this way. 2 riders where debuting the 350, one got a championship and the other got a top 5 finish. That's not too bad and there's entirely too many possible factors to say for sure that there's a problem with the bike. Give it another year or 2.

I don't think KTM can take the risk and let Mike ride the 450. It would be a disaster for their 350 campaign, if he beats Shorty on it.

Tony needs to step up his training game. He needs to start riding more jet skis and ordering his kid to do more kayaking. Once Tony gets things sorted out, everything will fall into place and he will be champion of the world.

I'm going to go with what a few others have said about it being the combination of Mike and the bike. They just don't jive and it really isn't a shocker. Mike has never ridden the smaller bikes as well as the 450's. He made his debut on a 450 and should have stayed on one IMO.

but reed was on the podium w/ the uncomfortable kawasaki.800 is 5th overall in series but not in the pace of top 5. just consistant for 5th in points for the full series. im not ragging on him, just wondering what the hell happened.if he was up front at the races for the 1st lap then faded to the rear ok, but this is not the case for him in 2010.

I think outdoors it is the bike a little. He needs a 450 outdoors. Heck, they weigh the same, just the 350 has less power.

The bike is not a 450! It doesnt have 450 HP! But on the track lap times are 450 worthy. Even when he doesnt get starts now, he is still starting around the top 5. I really feel it is Mike. The Red Bud crash and knee issues ruined him. I agree he needs to take some time and re-group. Like mentioned too, he has never rode the 250's well and the 350 rides a lot like the 250. Watch him ride. He is slamming into corners and always looking back. He is not comfortable and I think riding a little timid due to his injuries. Why is it that nobody wants to bash Shorty for saying the 350 is awesome in all his interviews? Yes Mikey burnt his bridges a while ago, but everyone needs to stop bitching about the bike and KTM and even Mike. Look at his results, still 5 O/A in the Nationals. Not to bad, especially on a first year bike and coming back from some big crashes.

The KTM 350 is junk! Of course Mike won't bag on the bike in interviews, that would effect bike sales if he says the bike is junk. Plus ktm would probably fire him.

It's not junk but he was coming off possibly the best team with the best bike in Factory Suzuki so of course it was a step down.

Are you sure 450 has 450 HP? I mean I believe you, but are you sure?

At least he beat newly signed Factory Honda rider and Mike`s biggest rival - Josh Grant - on that "junk".

mike's 350 isnt the same as Raviolis 350. everyone there at mxon said that antonios bike sounded different and performed different than mikes ama bike, because of the production rule..Its all about the start for 800, he has been starting out front since he was on PW's and has never had to come thru traffic. and doing it on a bike he is not comfortable on , has to make it harder...the boy needs some confidence. He has lost his holeshot mojo

Confidence. Or lack there of. Do you really think he, or especially Andrew Short coming off a factory honda 450 would pick the 350 if they didnt feel it was an advantage, let alone competitive? Well, actually contract dollars do play a large roll in that decision, but as prideful as moto guys are and as badass as Short is, I can't see them taking money to knowingly ride a crappy bike.

for mikey it's all between the ears, he's a product of his environment and unfortunately, the constant pressure and grind of what he's been going through has eaten away at his desire and drive. mike should leave the scene for a awhile and stay off the bike. stay out of the gym and off the road bike. mike IS alessi racing and many people rely on him and his ability to generate income for their own survival. if mike quit for a spell he'd find out who his real friends are.

mike has a talent that few possess...he was born with it, but even "god given" talent succumbs to extreme and constant pressure. i hope he can sort it out, not just in mx but in life also. mike's as good guy and deserves better imho.

as for "the comp is better" and the "it isn't the bike" and "he's doing well...he got a 5th" shit some of you are saying are full of horseshit up to yer fucking eyeballs. no fucking way mike should be in 5th...no fucking way mike doesn't holeshot AT LEAST ONE MOTO per race...no FUCKING WAY team suzuki and the people there didn't make a difference...BIG difference.

yup bomars of moto...mike just got slower and everybody got faster and the bike kicks ass because a european on a european scooter racing in europe kicks ass on the same exact scooter...identical from the ground up...uh huh.

afuckingmazing....

get mike out back watering the lawn or something and i bet you'll hear otherwise. the bike mike raced this year is not what it could have been. rememeber too that ktm pulled mikes factory practice bike because of rumors of taking the thing apart and bp'ing it and verifying "skunk werks" status. so no practice bike that mike could ride all the time...casey lytle said "sorry tony".

Mike's problem, and most do not know this, is he loves dance. He wants to be a dancer, not a mx rider. He wishes he could just stop and get on a tour and just dance dance dance

I think Mike's real problem is that added weight of BobbyM attached to his nuts. If he dropped that weight he might get the starts he needs.

Just an opinion...
When Alessi was younger, winning all his amateur championships, he almost always had the very best of equipment. The competition was there, but not like it is now.

Better equipment, less competition= a dominant force.

Now, everyone is currently running equal equipment and the depth of talent is very, very deep making it harder and harder for him to compete, let alone dominate like he did in his amateur days.
