If we could simply agree that all politicians are liars, and that there are too many people who get most of their current events knowledge from headlines written specifically to enrage, I think we'd be a lot better off. That and not engaging in insulting, labelling, dehumanizing, or any other name calling of people we disagree with.....

One thing I would suggest for anyone, no matter where you are on the political spectrum, is to avoid any sort of video or link with words like "destroys", "annihilates", "embarrasses", or something similar in the title. When you see that, you are not digesting news you are almost always clicking on a piece of propaganda that will offer you come more confirmation bias.

I do my own clean up. If I make a comment and it leads to members coming back at me with swearing and vulgarity. I go back a delete my original comment which deletes the comments they quoted me on ,and I move on. I don’t come here to get nasty, I like to poke a little fun and have people do the same. Nothing wrong with discussions where you don’t agree. Just show respect and 98% of the time it’s shown back. Every now and then ,if someone makes a great comment give um the thumbs up ,but also quote them and tell them you like their thoughts. People like a pat on the back every now and then.

Here’s a simple litmus test: would you be okay if your friends and family read your posts? If not, then maybe it’s time to rethink your approach. It is possible to engage in debates without resorting to insults and derogatory language.

Some come to argue, others want to debate. Two very different things and the ones that come to argue always seem to devolve the conversation into an argument.
Modern politics is not a rational enterprise and borders on the absurd. I like to debate, but I also realize that to think we’re all going to come to some neatly packaged resolution is, well absurd. You can’t rationalize what is inherently irrational. This struggle is where many start to become unhinged, myself included at times.

Believe it or not, I've learned quite a few things (other than some people are just ass hOles, I already knew that) Most of the people here are much older and wiser and have a lot to offer. Yes the incessant agitators get very annoying but I guess we have to put up with that. However it devolves pretty fast when someone gets backed into a corner with no good supporting information and they start name calling and getting just pissy. Then they get called out and down hill it goes. I didn't see the thread that this was about but I've a pretty good belief that's how it went down. I personally have had good conversation with people that are about as far opposite my opinion as you can get. Oh well, another day, another click. Maybe, ML could let someone help him moderate and it wouldn't get so absurd before the mod steps in.

I usually try to stay out of the controversial threads, and when I don't and do jump in half the time my posts disappear anyway. I jumped into the they them one and poof, posts disappeared. The good news is I really don't give a shit, there was a comment that pissed me off and I was looking for an argument, so it actually did me a favor. Pups, memes, word association, recipes and shit that looks fun or entertaining I'm opening. Anything that looks remotely political I'm passing over from now on. I've had some curveballs in real life lately and it's made me second guess where and what I want to spend my time and energy on. Arguing online didn't make my list.
