He never won a title, but I would say Mike Alessi is up there.

Trampas, Bobby, Donny, and Mike Healey don't get their due by Americans IMO. While Pomeroy, Lackey, and LaPorte paved the way, those guys represented us well in Europe

Adding Rodney Smith. He isn't known for this, but did quite well.

It’s crazy to think of how close Mike got to a championship in the big bike class multiple times, that would be a crazy name for the history books

Ducati made a "Believe the Hypermotard" shirt in 2008.  Mike graciously signed mine at an SX race.  (He did seem a little annoyed.)

AC is definitely the craziest one that comes to mind.

Gary Jones?

He went in 72 according to a list I found. He was actually the first guy I thought of.

Gary Jones?

I thought Gary was on one of the teams in the early 70s? For some reason I’m thinking he was on the team with Pomeroy one year?

In the last 30 years, I can only think of two national champs who've never been - Mike Brown and AC. Brown would've gone in 2001 and 2002 but '01 was after 9/11 and we didn't send a team and I think 02 was the year we tried to build a track or something for it and it fell through, so neither were totally the fault of the selection committee.

I can't remember why AC didn't go in '19 when he was national champ. What he hurt?

On Brown, you forgot the massive drama of 2005 when, supposedly, someone with a lot of pull convinced PC to give him slow engines and cause him to drop in the 125 outdoor standings and also influenced him right off the MXDN team in favor of a friend.

What???? You're saying someone talked Mitch into giving his rider a slower bike? "supposedly"..... Did you hear that from your cousin's friend's sister in law's yoga instructor who met a guy at pickle ball who used to race with Mike "back in the day..... supposedly"???

Brown wasn’t on the P..C. Team in 2005. He was riding Hondas and had Pro Circuit doing the engines. He was leading the points and then his results started going down. He switched engine builders mid season. There were rumors that he didn’t think he was getting the same engines he was at the beginning of the year. I don’t know if any of that is true but it was on the message boards back then .

Agreed. I think the most egregious omissions in order have been:

Marty Smith (1974 and 1975 125, 1977 500)

Bell (1980 SX champ)

Ellis (1975 SX champ)

Bobby Moore (1994 125 World Champ)

Adam Cianciarulo (2019 250 Champ)

How is it that you have Michael Byrne on the U.S. team in 2004 ? He is Australian.

Looks like the AI that compiled the list made an error.

Edit: The US wasn't at the event in 2004.

It will be cool when the Lawrences are US citizens in about 2 years.  🇺🇸  Then we can have them and Kenny as a team with Reed as the team manager.  Only downvote if you are Australian.  😁

How is it that you have Michael Byrne on the U.S. team in 2004 ? He is Australian.

I found a few other errors I fixed, god only knows how many still exist. I did have AI search try and argue with me it was still only June 2024 last week, and wouldn't acknowledge current events.

On Brown, you forgot the massive drama of 2005 when, supposedly, someone with a lot of pull convinced PC to give him slow engines and cause him to drop in the 125 outdoor standings and also influenced him right off the MXDN team in favor of a friend.

No... Brown was on Hondas that year. He was beating the pants off of Mitch's riders.

pc was still doing brown's engines. and the rumor he was getting shafted on hp was pretty rampant in NE TN at the time.

Marty Smith should definitely have gone, but after Honda had him running 125 nationals and the gps in the same season it is not surprising he had little interest in returning to Europe.

Alessi? please........

Erik Kehoe should have gone.

Darrell Schultz,'82 500 mx champ, should have gone in but his knee was so trashed he had to use crutches to get to the bike the last few races.

Bump for an answer on AC. As I type this I just realized why. Kawi wouldn't send him. Mfer

Same reason we missed out on peak Tomac multiple times. Thanks Kawi.

AC was moving up to the 450 class and I think that was the reason AC said he couldn’t/wouldn’t go when he won the 250 title in ‘19. Kawi also could’ve told them to use that as a reason because they weren’t supporting it. AC did go win 100k at Monster cup that year tho.

Yaa I remember reading that PC was letting valves or something internal in his engines go for longer than they should’ve been. And Yaa he had PC doing his engines on his Honda. I think PC was even doing the FC Honda motors at the time too lol

Kenny Roberts, Jay Springsteen, Dick Mann or Mert Lawwill never got to go.

I would have liked to see Guy Cooper go in 90 after winning the 125 title. Same with Dymond after 87 title.
