Showa/kayaba works suspension? Didn’t he run the Showa bfrc shock? And the forks are Showa.

Did they build the bike with used parts?

"Brand new: never raced, only 7 minutes of runtime"

The frame/engine and most pieces will be new, but a lot of times suspension is just rebuilt. They only have so many sets each year.

And that was late enough in the Suzuki era that it may be works stuff from the Yoshimura/Suzuki era a couple years before.

The shock that blew apart on Roczen was several years old if I heard correctly.

That lockwire is horrendous to a aircraft engineer eye… does do the job though! 😅

I've met the guy at Barber vintage fest and he was nice enough to not bid me up, he's cool in my book.

It was built for a customer of mine. He sold it to the museum, it was not a race bike of Reeds, but it was built to the same specs as the last bike that Reed raced for JGR.  Built by Lee McCullum and JGR, some parts were harder to find than others so some have time on them and some were 0 hours.   It was built like he was building a new race bike for Reed.  Some of the parts did come from the bike Reed raced last time, some were fresh. I'm pretty sure anything with visible wear was a part that was used by Reed.  My customer had bought a ton of stuff from JGR  before he had them build the bike. So some of the parts were stuff he had that he brought back to them for them to use.

He never rode it until he sold it to Kaplan. They let him ride it after they shot the video .  The only ride time the bike has on it was the video shot location .  I didn't think he would ever sell that bike! He has a few other RMZ's and had a couple race engines and suspension he was trying to get me to buy for my RMZ.  He has an amazing collection of bikes, I was going to make a video highlighting all of them. But I'm unable to be away from my house and shop now that I am taking care of my mom.  The bike is legit.

Thanks for the background information! I have no intention or funds of buying it but do you know why it says kyb/showa works suspension?

I don't know. Maybe they made a mistake writing that in the description for the listing?  I'll ask my customer and see , but I remember him telling me that the suspension was one of the harder parts to source when they were building the bike. As far as I know its all Showa stuff. Legit works forks and shock, setup the same as the last race Reed rode for them.  My customer is super anal and wanted everything exact, right down to clicker position.

I built CH47 engines for 10yrs. My job for almost 3yrs was lock wiring the entire engine . I learned a lot, and when I see how these bikes are lock wired, it really catches my attention

You would be surprised at some of the stuff on true factory bikes. Most of the bike will be flawless, but then there are some little things like that , that make You wonder.

I had thought about putting a video or series of photos together that showed all of the average guy level work I spotted on Factory race bikes . But I was worried it may bring more grief  than it was worth.  Nothing that impacts the safety or function ( that I saw) cosmetic stuff.  Sometimes they are tearing a bike apart with not much time before the next moto .

Not that I’m gonna buy it but when I read the description it just sounded unprofessional as I thought and remember it was Showa on that bike.. guess I’m super anal wanting to get an answer to this 😂

There is couple misprints from the person writing the description.. It’s true  works showa forks and shocks straight from Japan, and was the one of last 3 sets available to the race team. Everything on the bike is legit jgr and  the buyer will also get the complete build sheet straight from Renee Zapata.

I’ve heard the same about f1 cars. They look immaculate from far away but get close enough and you’ll see some pretty rudimentary stuff.

I just dont see the price being worth it. If it was raced by chad then ya I get it. Its a replica. An unrideable bike built to the specs of 22 .
