Kudos on considering something other than a 450. Do it.
I get a kick out of the fat vet macho men who dismiss the thought of riding anything but a built 450. It's hilarious.
pshh
my mom didn't raise no bitch
I’m typing this in a cervical collar after breaking my C6. I just got my first 450 and I’m pretty fast but the power is just different. When you crack the throttle on a 450 there is zero delay. My YZ250 and MC350 would have enough of a differential between throttle and launch to provide some margin. The RMZ450 so sharp and pointed that it feels like you’re defying physics the way it moves. I know that sounds maybe dramatic but I’ve never experienced anything like it in the dirt.
I would do anything for an RMZ325.
I rode a 25 KX250f the week before breaking it back to back with the 450. Maybe some people are different but that bike truly did not have enough power. I was laughing while riding it. I do so closely resonate with your story and share the same feelings.
Does anyone know the best way to add some mellow back to a 450? Bigger countershaft sprocket? I haven’t even removed my backfire screen and have the bike tuned down mellow😂
I'm 63, and usually ride a Yz125.
When Yamaha had a demo day, I tried the 250 2 stroke, and the 450.
The 450 was more rideable to me. I'm sure I could get used to it, but the 250 2 stroke scared the crap out of me! It was simply explosive, where the 450 was super fast but controllable.
If you're trying to tame it down a bit, give a 125 a good chance. They're incredibly fun, and plenty fast, for me anyway.
That said, I may give a 250F a try for my next bike.

Try out a Stark Varg before you buy anything. Fully customizable power. Don’t forget to get a referral before you buy. You will thank me later.
Your yz125 modded is Real quick & strong. I agree a 2st 250 can be a violent burst upsetting the chassis hitting deep holes etc. You get away with swamps on a 125 a 250 will punish you. I stopped riding 250 2-st because of my back you sit more . 91 cr250 has a great feel handling & the motor is amazing. If your into old bikes that’s a good one. 250f,s are too hvy the op has injuries not a good bike unless he gets healed up .
The 250 2t needs a flywheel weight to smooth it out.
As I have got older, I am thinking of a 250F also. I rode my friends YZ250 2-stroke and it's a blast, but wears me out quickly. I've dropped 44 lbs, but still a bit over 200 lbs (still losing weight though) and think a 250F would pull me now just fine. I love a 450 in the right place, but they are a handful. This is coming from a former CR500 and KX500 rider.
I,m the opposite reg wt 172 down to 148-150. Fight with insurance for a month to get injections. I did pt on my own a ton of stretching , epson salt baths hot& cold , speed sit-ups at 7pm . I pig out before bed & still lost wt. super busy doing stuff too. I think it sped my metabolism up. I,m eating like a horse I only got up to 155. The lt wt Really made a difference on the bike the little riding I did. Same gate drop 30,50+ I think I ran down & passed most of the 30+ guys on new 250f& 450 on a clay track. 50+ is real fast. And I skipped practice I didn’t even look at the track. Haha . I,m sticking with a 125
