I've been using a Harbor Freight carrier on a couple vehicles no problem (thousands of miles logged). Bought it for $100. This one is my latest. It's been sturdy and I haven't had any issues. Like others have said, if you have the option to take pins out so the tires sit in the carrier, do it. I usually just use two front tiedowns.PXL 20240427 150827053.MP PXL 20240427 150834221.MP image-20240528090520-1

This makes me want to pull the trigger on a hitch carrier for my 110 on my Tiguan. Class 3 hitch but the tongue weight limits always scare me.

I got a class 3 hitch which is rated for a 500 lb tongue weight. So I don't even hit half the limit. I used a class 1 hitch on my other vehicle for years and didn't have an issue lol.

I'm in OR. We don't have inspections but we do have to get tested for emissions every two years. Seems like they don't care about the front plate also, don't really enforce it.

Nice. I hated with dealing with emissions when we lived in Georgia for a few years.

Luckily Florida got ride of emissions in the late 90’s!

Those hitch carriers have brought a lot of new riders into the sport.  They seem to work great…..I haven’t heard any horror stories.  Just remember that those following might not be able to see the turn lights so keep that in mind when driving.  Also….don’t light up a bowl because you could get pulled over for blocking the license plate.    Minor things.

In NY State they will give you a ticket if taillights are blocked, pretty cool, imagine it just plugs in to your trailer connector.

Yeah, just plugs in the trailer lights. I see them every day here in Queensland, no worries at all!

I did this ONE time and I got rear ended, my biggest concern came true before I even made it to my destination.

Moving to Florida this week. I decided to buy the motoTote after a lot of research. A bit expensive but looks to be very well made. There are other good carriers available that I considered.

I'll be hauling my Husky 125 about 800 miles with my Tacoma, so that will be a good test. I got the free tail light kit as well.

For anyone with the Harbor Freight 600lb, can the truck tailgate open fully without hitting the front wheel chock?

In the pic of mine early in this thread I have my pegs tied down with ratchet straps.  Since then I’ve been using large turnbuckles from Amazon the tie the pegs down.  Once you tie the pegs down it’s way more secure.  I pull mine for long distances all the time.

I hauled one once with a hitch carrier about 3500 miles round trip. Multiple occasions someone about hit the bike while in traffic. Have avoided using it again and try to fit everything in the truck bed. Found with our bike combinations, we can fit 4 bikes in the bed of our trucks negating the need to the hitch carrier.

I ran fork straps, peg straps, straps on both wheels to the carrier, a strap to the truck so it couldn't fall backwards. Way over secured but was extremely rigid and stable the whole trip.

I would check the hitch rating on the RV. I was surprised to find out my inlaws had a rating of something ridiculous on theirs. 100 lbs or something completely useless. They had 2 bicycles off the back and it all failed dragging the bikes behind.

So after using a couple times the Facebook group I follow with this type of RV had some post about hitch carriers (for storage) failing. Even though the Curt hitch is rated for 500 lbs, the way they mount it derates it to around 300. It’s mounted to the bumper, basically through 3/16” sheet metal…Curt makes a heavier hitch but it’s not made for the extended pro masters which our RV is built on. I purchased anyhow, and they were right, it doesn’t fit…with a little grinding and a couple new holes was able to fit it. Not sure why Curt doesn’t update their design, wouldn’t take much more than some CAD revisions and it would open their hitch to more customers. Anyhow, feel better using it this way, but sometimes throw the bike in the van or if taking 2 bikes use both.

My biggest concern with hitch carriers. I've been rear-ended three times in the last 10 years. Thankfully, never had a hitch carrier - I keep my bike in the truck bed.

How did your bike turn out?

I backed into a post with my carrier hitch.  Bent the main tube a little.  When I get to my lake house what has big trees, I think I’ll back into the other end and try to bend it back lol.

Easiest way I've found is to empty the truck bed and put it in there.

Spent the day watching son in law help son add a receiver to the back of his travel trailer. Luckily the bumper is solid and basically part of the frame. They cut a square hole through it and the welded it to the frame as well as the bumper. It’s solid. I wanted to check this thread for carrier options and ideas. Phase one done. Get a solid receiver.

Everyone I’ve used has a crazy amount of flex and I’ve put them all through the wringer. But, somehow never had any failures. Feel like they just look sketchier than they are.

Did a 1200 mile trip with mine last week to South Dakota. Super handy and stable.

I thought my suv got slightly better mileage with the bike on the receiver hitch than with no bike.

I totally agree with you. I swear that my Dodge 1500 gets better gas mileage with the bike on the hitch  carrier  then when there’s nothing back there. I don’t know if it has something to do with that negative pressure area behind a vehicle while in motion or what ,but it always seemed like the truck got an extra 25 miles out of a tank. i’ve said it to a few guys through the years and they always look at me like I’m crazy. I’m glad someone else noticed it.

Thanks ! Yeah he did a good job the things solid as a rock. The only downside was he can't store his long shitter hose in the bumper anymore as that space is now cut in half. But we learned an RV hack for that. It might come in handy for other things too. He bought a 4" piece of vinyl fencing material from Home Depot and is going to hose clamp it on top of the bumper. They even come with end caps. Kind of a neat trick if you're looking for a way to store a long or extra dump hose 👍
