We just got back from the Trials World Championship in Rhode Island and pleasantly suprised to see Honda team manager Lars Lindstrom and AMAs Jeremy Albrecht there. True fans of motorcycling.

Grew up with a guy named, Marlon Whaley.

He was a trials rider for factory Montessa.

The stuff, even back then, we'd watch him do on his bike were unbelievable.

He went on to be a national trials champion.

Does anyone know if Pat Smage was possibly there? Not sure if he is riding this series.

Fun fact, on the same road from where the trials is held was the one and only RI AMA MX race.  1978 Pine Top national.  I was there, but again missed the trials.  Everyone said its just incredible.

Pat was not there as he is in limbo with the current Sherco US importer change. I think they are pooling resources for the last US national. The rider he has been battling with, Jorge Casales, was running near the front at times. US rider Josh Roper had a strong ride in Trial 2. Toni Bou is incredible. As said above... if you ever get the chance to see a world round or US national Trial... DO IT! It’s an amazing sight to see.

Sherco was there, as was the new distributor, I met him or at least a rep, not certain. Casales borrowed my wife's phone during the event, prettt cool.

I’m lucky enough to belong to a MC club that holds trials events inAMA D6. Those guys are pretty amazing. I got to see Ryan Young back in the day and the Myers brothers (ama trials des nations team members) these days.

The things trials riders can do is amazing skill .

I learned a lot about body positioning and bike control by plonking around riding trials and riding a couple of the trials events.

My going through MX turns leaned over with both feet on the pegs was something I learned from riding trials.

Ben a long time friend in MD that is also a Vital member 1st introduced me to trials anf he had one of the teams come by his auto shop on their way to this event and do some work on their sprinter.

Marland Whaley.

I knew of him on Montesas after '78 but, first, and, primarily (for me) as a Honda (Works) Trials rider, on the RTL305 and 306s., before that.

And those Hondas were Trick! They were not the "bials" production bikes, that's for sure!

5 times US Trials champion, did The Scottish 6 Days Trial a few times . He was a  major rival  in the US scene to Bernie Schreiber, 1979 World Champion. Those two really pushed each other.

I think I first saw 'floating turns' and other near balletic moves done by both Marland and Bernie in magazine pictures in the mid 70s - it was quite incredible.

He had the   Blond Hair Surfer look - I've no idea if he was, but, know he came from San Diego / Santee California, but moved to Montana . He raced MTBs in later years, becoming Champion in Ultra Endurance  age class a few years before his passing.

Sadly, he died in 2019, of a heart attack, at 60 years of age.

One of Motorcycling's Greats, as far as I'm concerned.

I was there too! That was a fun track, up and down the small ski slopes.

It's magic what a world round rioder can do. I ride trials ocaasionally, it's fun and even the lower class lines are challenging.

Grew up in Santee.

Foothills at the end of strathmore dr were our stomping grounds.

As were the sandpits off of carlton hills dr.

Tripes, and other local pros rode those sand pit trails every week.

Crazy how many top riders we'd see out there during our after school sessions.

They did do a local NESC race there that year.

I'm almost certain he's the most successful sportsperson ever (as in world titles). He's a phenomenon.

Video footage doesn't do him justice (or the other guys and girls for that matter). You have to seem them in person, when you're up close and can see their throttle control, balance and the size of the sections, it's something else.

I’m sure. The competition videos on YouTube are great,

I missed the RI round this year. Back in, I believe it was 1985, I competed in the NATC National in Williamsport, PA. The National was held on Saturday with a World round on Sunday. At the time Jordi Tarrés was at the top of the sport. Watching the top European riders was incredible! Tony Bou has elevated the sport even higher, to a truly amazing level.

Yep, he's the most dominating athlete ever, in my opinion. And also super cool, down to earth guy.

Everts swore by trials as an outstanding way to improve your overall riding capabilities for MX.

I did it as a kid and won a few regional championships and anytime it was a muddy MX race (often in England) I’d slay and it didn’t even feel like I was trying.

Highly recommended!
