Yeah, I know - Non-Moto.

Anyhoo, my son is wanting to get started in BMX, so naturally I wanna race too. I'm 28 and have never raced BMX, but I rode alot of street in high school and college on a 24" and also an mtb dirt jumper. Any tips for getting started? I really have no idea where to start in regards to bikes, classes, etc. I still have my old 24" free agent, but I like toys so I figure I may end up getting something else. I'm as green as it gets when it comes to BMX racing so any advice for a newb would be greatly appreciated.
Long time lurker here first time posting... thought a topic like this would be most appropriate for me to start Wink

Even though you're on a cruiser right now, they are allowed (since 2015) in the Novice classes. So you have the opportunity of running 28-35 Novice AND Cruiser. My son just turned 5 Intermediate after a long time on Striders and a year in 5 Novice and I'll be in 28-35 N this year. Here in SoCal, the Cruiser class is always very popular and I would think it'd be the same everywhere else in the Nation. The struggle I find is the Novice class usually ends up being an 18+ Open Novice on a regular club race night. State Races and Nationals are different of course, there will be a 28-35 Novice class there. Hopefully you and your son enjoy it. We did it 3x a week from January-Nov last year and finally got burnt out.

You didn't mention how old your son is?

We are at the races here in the Seattle area every_single_weekend. I have a 5 year old boy and a 9 year old boy that both race. I ride the tracks plenty with them on my 20" Ripper XL, but don't race per se (I did for years growing up). Most tracks are open for riding when sanctioned events aren't going on, so go to the track and ride and have some fun! Go watch some races with your son and if it clicks, you have an awesome VERY family sport, that is about as healthy as you can get. I would definitely say go ride the tracks a bit though before committing too deep, it isn't as easy as it looks :D

If you guys do get the bug, brace yourself... Race fees are usually 10-15$ for a normal weekend, so not bad. But you will spend a bit more on bikes and parts than you may think Wink
He's 8. He's got a free agent too

I will concure on the you will spend more than you think on bikes. Our track operator when we started in 2012 said you can make it as cheap as you want......then I see all the trick shit and now I have 5 complete race bikes with WAY more than I would have thought into them. Carbon, titanium, and instent engage hubs.....so cool.
my daughters cruiser I just did, next is wheels which for what I am ordering are about $1000

my sons old doublecross cruiser I built this fall, now its going on the wall (serieal #1)

bike I jsut picked up for me to ride around at the track on

Pick up a broom or a shovel your first night at the track and you will get a lot of people who will be more than willing to help you with bike set up and answering questions. Just stopped racing BMX last year and it is such a rewarding sport and a blast to just go out and session with your buddies. It's not all about nationals and chasing points. Most of the time it's about late night track sessions and jumping doubles. Keep it fun!

Me

My son.

BMX is a great sport. its character building, and it teaches success and failure on a personal level. When you fail its you, when you succeed its you and not a team. the one advice I give to parents is,DON'T YELL AT YOUR KIDS. Not every kid is going to be a nag rider, just be happy with what they are.

I heard about the new bmx park at Barids creek I checked it out Sunday .  The concrete pump track looks fun. The trails are posted in detail see pic.  I need my 96 connondale rebuilt so I,ll be at at a bike store .  What is a cheap but decent bmx bike now ? Or model ?  I don’t want tge crank or wheels going out fast .  IMG 3740 5

You won’t regret it I raced bmx from 98-2001 as a child in Southern California. Orange y, Coal canyon, Whittier Narrows, cutting edge where some badass tracks. Some of my fondest memories as a child was the time spent racing bmx.

You can pick up a decent BMX bike for a few hundred, just look for 3 piece cranks and wheels with sealed bearings. There are a ton of different brands out there and no real difference between them.

A lot of the +30 crowd have been moving towards the 22'' BMX wheels or a MTB dirt jumper,  doesn't really matter though because  you'll get comfortable with whatever you ride.

How cool it would have been if my Dad and I started racing BMX together.

BMX for me was some of the best years of my youth. Just an amazing experience for a young kid.

Do what your son is doing - get a bike, show up and race! You'll learn from there. I'd run that Free Agent. So cool you kept that. I wish I would have kept mine.

A couple guys had bigger than 20 in wheels on the pump track , it looks fun . It’s all free too .  We had a killer track in a diff part of the woods 98-03 . I brought a water jug & food I,d ride it for hrs.  I,ll check fb 1st I,m not up on current models & what there worth .  The pump track & trails look fun.  I think it would be good practice to for fair races tight & quick .  Michael Hicks AX star rides alot of bmx.

Mosh Lux 5 Star isn’t a bad park bike at all for that price, but I think it’s too heavy to race. MacNeil rear hub isn’t bad either. Can’t tell what the front hub is, but it laced up to a good rim. I can’t tell what the rest of the parts are.
Be careful on a pump track when you’re first learning, you can build up speed pretty quickly and end up on the ground. Definitely don’t carry your weight over the front of the bars or you will get hurt.
Park is a blast, go have fun.

If you are going to get a new bike, go shop Redlines, they are a good price point bike.

Thx for the info . I,m just riding for fun. Sunday 2 guys rode the pump track then took a break .  I asked them could you please ride a little more so I can learn how to ride it.  So they did. I hv the new slayco 96 evs TP199 type knee pads . Medium should’ve fit the calf’s are wayy too small. I cut the bottom 1/2 off to get them on. I never wore a helmet for bmx but I,ll get a used one off of fb.

And here's what I used to race.

Auburn was sick in its day!

Pull your bars back closer to head angle.
lower your seat at least 2 inches or more.

practice flowing with no pedaling. If you can go from the gate to the finish line no pedals your learning right. Once you learn to pump the whole track where you're up to full speed by the rhythm section you're good to go (like almost always third straight now that tracks are so homogenized).

Ride dirt jumps and skate parks.

If your racing past local level practice flat starts, do squats, split squats, plyos (not gay box jumps), and hang cleans.

And stay off the roids. Youre an example dammit.

That’s Bitchin! Only photo I could dig up in the house was a practice day at perris. That’s me on the 277. We even had the same helmet. Raced a lot out at orange Y, coal canyon, perris and cutting edge. Still have a stem pad from cutting edge on one of my old powerlites. Stopped racing BMX once I turned 7 to race moto.  Good times IMG 0733 2

Profeshenal, if you snag that bike you may want to cut down that front axle. Don’t need all that extra to come get you in a fall. Have fun with it.   Haven’t been to a track in years but I pump around the skateparks and dirt jumps on a 22”

As a side note, building dirt jumps is great forearm conditioning for riding moto, get out there and help the kids build some booters.

Same here. I raced dual slalom mountain bikes at the time, so I was just there for gates. We're in Tulsa for my son, now. He's 17-20x and "Futures Pro". The track here is nothing like the tracks in the early 2000's, but there is a smaller "traditional" track down the street that has the vibe of Orange Y with all of the pro's doing Wednesday night gates.

This is my son here in Tulsa.

We got our kids into BMX 2-4 years ago. Thanks to Stacyc for partnering with USABMX. We’re hooked. It’s easier, cheaper and something to do during the week.

I raced my DJ’er a few times in cruiser but it’s a pig compared to the 24” bikes. So I got a frame the local guy is building up. I’m kind of bummed I missed out on BMX because of moto when I was a kid. We have a blast with it and our kids love it.

I would make the kid watch the movie "rad" before doing anything else.  That's all.

Used to race back in the 1980's and stopped around '86. A friend got his kid into it a couple of years ago and said I should give it a go again, so i went to a race to have a look. Oh boy... it's a different sport to when I was doing it! Probably too loo late to start doing the new big jumps in my 50's 😄
