Definitely not to little kids. I was given stuff when I was young. Shane McElrath gave my nephew his race worn jersey and pants last year.

Really? Does he by chance ride a KTM and is oft injured? That's interesting...I've have heard riders not giving out gear or autographs to certain people because they are known to turn around and sell it on ebay.

I fully support not giving gear to just anyone. I would only give mine to true fans, who asked politely and didn’t come across as entitled. I think charging fans for gear (that the rider got for free) is disgraceful, especially by someone as wealthy as this guy.

I have Tim Ferry's left hand JT glove from Unadilla in '95 or'96. Asked for his goggles and he hit me in the face with a sweaty glove from 15 feet away after a moto.

In the early 2000’s, me and my younger brother were walking through the pits at Millville and he was the type of kid that would ask any rider for anything and I was the type of kid that was basically too shy to even ask for a picture. Michael Sleeter was coming in from qualifying and stopped on his way back to his pit and my brother goes “Hey, can I have your goggles?” as we were walking past him. Sleeter looks at him kinda confused and goes “Dude, do you even know who I am?” My brother says “Yeah! Kelly Slater!” Sleeter just shakes his head and laughs as he facepalms. I probably turned as red as a tomato and basically pulled my brother away from that interaction as quick as I could and was so ashamed to even be a part of it. He of course was unfazed.

To his defense, I didn’t know who Michael Sleeter was at the time either but I knew for damn sure he wasn’t Kelly Slater! That shit still haunts me. Grinning

Riders don’t give too much stuff out like they did. You can scoop up some plastic almost all the time now. But gear is hard to get because everyone asks and they don’t want to just give it to the first person or some random person. Not sure if they have them already pre given away now or what. Goggles and shit from most guys go back to the manufacturer and gets cleaned up and set back up like new and used for practice goggles or the guys with less support get them for race goggles. Most guys not getting money to wear goggles get some for home beginning of the season then the race goggles get recycled like I said above. It’s been a while so I may be off now but that’s how it used to be not too long ago.

Lots of riders will give them to a podcast guy now to have a giveaway or for a charitable cause to raise money for someone else. Not sure if any of our rides sell any actual race worn jerseys. Some company’s will make replicas and have them signed and sold.

Can you imagine .

“ Can  I have your stinky, dirty, sweaty old jersey you got for free please boss “ ?

“ Yeah here ya go, that’ll be $100.00 “.

My presumption is this is where you laugh in his face and turn heel ?

Or do let loose a few profanities ?

I’m rather unclear on the correct etiquette in this situation.

No, they shouldn't. The fan that got the jersey shouldn't sell it on eBay either....

Some privateers have in the past, but that’s a different story.

I know that in the UK, some brands are handing gear out for riders to use, but they want it back a couple weeks later.
Not so that they can recoup the costs of it, but they can run competitions/promotions later and get more advertising from the same set of gear.

Won’t it be stained?

Don’t worry about the stains, there’s a guy here on vital that will clean it for free.

I figured I’d get this comment when I wrote that. 🤣

Only if you are Nico izzi but then you would never even get the gear because he would sell 1 item to 30 different people 🤣

It’s up to the person that gets it what they do with it. If they can make someone else happy to have it and they get some money no love is lost. Now the people that hoard just to sell online….that’s trashy.

If He's selling it to the guys that are turning around and flipping it. Then go for it. Why not?

Or just give it to the true fans and say no to the people You know or suspect will flip it.

Fans ,well people pretending to be a fan to get a free thing so they can turn around and sell it is much more disrespectful in my opinion. And at least the rider in question that may be charging for stuff is not trying to deceive anybody.   Maybe he just doesn't want to try and figure out whos flipping the stuff and who is a true fan, so he just throws out a number.

Even if my least favorite racer was doing this, I would have the same feelings about them selling the stuff. I don't think its a big deal.

I don’t know of any pro rider who charges for used racewear. Charging for racewear goes against a lot of sponsorship agreements that have a product and financial element, I’ve known riders be invoiced for selling their sponsorship products.

I have a Herlings shirt, he doesn’t like giving them out as he’s sick of seeing them for sale so saves them for sponsors as a thank you or charity. Same as Roczen, he gives them to his mechanics or charity or something. The coolest thing I have is a Team Australia Tee that I got Team Australia to sign at the MXoN last year, that ones getting framed.
