Everyone can say what they want about "the greatest rider to never win a major championship" but to me the rider at the top of that list wiithout a doubt, is Robbie Reynard.

Sure there is Windham, who we all know is amazing...but he had all the chances and opportunity to win a championship and just couldn't make it happen, Robbie to me was robbed of that chance due to 1. The worst luck I have ever seen anyone endure 2. Possibly not enough Milk as a kid ? I dunno, but the dude seemed to have a body made of glass ?!

I have not been a lifelong moto fan like a DC or some others in here. But If I can pick 3 rides that most stick out in my head in my short life as a fan of moto. Ricky's "broken visor SX ride to second", Ricky flipping down the hill at Glen Helen after pulling the holey, dont even know where he got back to, just know he was hauling ass !!! And RR's ride in moto 1 at Unadilla in 98...you could see he just seemed to hit every square inch of track he wanted to..I'm just glad I got to see that one in person !!!

I have, within the last 3 months, personally seen Robbie lay down faster lap times than Trey. Trey looks like he's going faster but I think its because, as previously stated, Robbie is just so smooth he does not look like he's going all that fast.

I grew up watching RR ride EVERY weekend...

A Story:

Robbie used to go to the line on his KX80 with his boots unbuckled... the gate would drop, everyone would take off, and Robbie would start buckling his boots up while his dad revved his bike.
Robbie would generally be in the lead by the second lap and checking out.
This was at the legendary Motorcycle Raceways, the winter track on the hill.

As a side note, I also raced Nascar's Clint Bowyer on that track every week.

The only time I ever saw Robbie ride was at an arenacross race, it was an extremely tight track but i couldnt believe how smooth he looked and how fast he was going through a barely existant rut on a flat corner. Looked awesome. And that video of him at dilla was amazing.

After watching those videos all I can think about is how much better today's top amateurs are than yesterday's top pros.

bikes and track design are faster ,this day and age. back then, mistakes on a bike are more noticable n carry the speed back up from a mistake is more impressive .

Cunty C,

People like you are what make the internet a joke. I don't recall reading anything here that claimed RR was better than_______(insert rider here). The topic of RC came up because that one specific race/moto gives a lot of insight to RR's potential. Moto enthusiasts are quick to point out, but an average or casual fan might not be able to gauge RR's speed/ability.

How many people can say they even led a lap against RC in an AMA MX or SX race? That number would maybe fit into a small bedroom. Better yet, how many people can say they ran down RC... leading, in an AMA MX or SX race? That number would maybe fit into a phonebooth. There is no doubt that RC "won the war" so to speak and had a career like no other, that wasn't the topic.

This post was filled with positive comments about a true talent that really could have been "that guy", but it wasn't meant to be for whatever reason, but of course, you have to chime in with your BS. If RR and his posse were on here or giving interviews saying "poor us" or "what if", that would be a different story, but that is not the case. You are a complete tool and a clueless one at that. I vote for a VitalMX.Ca where all you "canerdians" can sit around and gossip about JSR or Klatt and not steal bandwidth from real mx fans at this place. Speaking of "average", how is Canada gonna fair this weekend?
I am back. Sorry for having a opinion other than the mass amount of people who probably never seen his seasons. Ya Canada is not a power house on the racing seen.
but I would put my money on JSR all day long if I was looking a solid season out of my rider.
Pitty he did not get the factory ride he deserved in 98 when he was the top privateer in the preimer class (not the development class)
Ow I forgot there was this guy named Damon Huffman who also beat RC hands down at Troy in 97 (both motos).
Came to the great white north for two seasons as a team mate with the same bikes as JSR and could not beat him.
Have a good day..

If it wasnt for Windam Robbie would be the fastest guy to have never won a major title. Well, I guess you can add Bradshaw in there as well. Robbie rode well past what most people would of walked away from in terms of injuries. I cant even fathom having to go through what he has, and Ive had some good ones. Its also nice to see a family as supportive as the Reynards are of Robbie. I remember seeing some Factory Honda techs asking Reynard Sr. about what he was doing with his motors etc. , Very cool! Robbie has all of the tools, just seems to be living Newton's law too often

Member' when Everts said US Racers were cowards....................................................

A high point of kevin's motocross career came in 1999. Kevin decided to race the USGP being held at Budd's Creek, MD only three days prior to the event. European Champion and motocross hero over seas Stefan Everts made a comment concerning the top US racers deciding not to race the GP, rather to focus on the US races and the time off the week end allowed. Everts said he thought the US racers were being cowards. This angered Kevin Windham greatly. Stefan Everts at the time was one of the toughest racers to beat. Kevin went on to dominate the race and left no doubt that Everts had nothing for him on that day. This race was very emotional for Kevin and it took years for Kevin to finally say he was okay with Stefan Everts. Kevin put the motorcycle he won that race on his trophy room, suspended from the ceiling.

WARNING...it is LONG!!!!

Some consider Robbie 'naturally talented, smooth, goes fast, but looks slow, good technique" All those maybe true, but to get that way it takes PRACTICE....Robbie would practice as an amatuer every single day. If he struggled in an area on a track....he did it over and over and over again until it was second nature.

Steve Cox once said to me, that people talk about how your brother and Kevin Windham are naturally talented...he said, WHAT the hell is that. He said to be that smooth on a bike you have to work your ass off..he said anyone can just twist a throttle...they have worked to be that way!! I think he said it best! That is so true! He worked to be the way he was on a bike no doubt!!

As an amatuer, Robbie was one of the most amazing riders to watch on a track. That Unadilla race was the Robbie we knew as an amatuer. He flowed around a track and his cornering is unreal. He could pass anywhere. He fought every single lap, if he was in 1st place lapping someone or chasing the leaders. He never gave up!!! I think that is what carried Robbie through his career. He never gave up when most said he should, when most said how much more can your body take? He loves this sport with a passion I think few understand. Robbie is a quiet guy. He is humble about his achievements, because he felt he could of done more!!!! Most agree, but what he has accomplished isn't really anything to be ashamed of. Many race their whole lives and NEVER win a moto or a race. Robbie has, BUT he always wanted more.

Unfortantely, INJURIES more numerous than anyone could ever count and some sooo severe that I don't know how he got back on a bike, but he did with shear determination. Some call it bad luck, but it is what it is. As an amateur, you can count Robbie's injuries on one hand...a broken collar bone at 5, a broken tib/fib at 14...that is it!!!! Until he turned pro. His 1st pro sx San Jose in June (sx and mx overlapped back then) he cased a triple and snapped his lower arm and never crashed. He simply rolled to the next jump pulled to the side and held his wrist. Everyone was heart broken, but none more than Robbie. He healed and came back flying...he won his 1st outdoor that same summer at Steelcity and became the youngest rider to ever win an outdoor national.

He went to Paris for the Bercy SX in Nov and after flight issues arrived right before the night program, sleep deprived the promoter wanted him to race. So he raced and came up short on a jump and dislocated his shoulder for the 1st time. Sadly this injury continued. No matter the rehab program he did it never stayed in. He had surgery and it never came out again, until the 1st US Open SX in 1999 (?). Robbie won night one and was feeling great! He went into night two ready to take the big prize home. In the Man event, he was on the inside of the 1st turn and slapped his shoulder against a pole. It popped out and slammed back into joint. resulting in NO movement of his upper arm muscles, he couldn't do a bicep curl or raise his arm over his head....he had nerve damage. The neurologist did all the needle testing and said the nerves were dead and that he had NO muscle fiber response and would never have full use of that arm. Don't ever tell Robbie NEVER....he worked his butt off and went back to that doctor a month later and could scratch his back, do a bicep curl, raise his arm over his head. The doc said I have no idea HOW you are doing that, but you must be using your back muscles to compensate. He still has a numb spot on the outside of his upper arm, but he proved that Doctor wrong. During and after this time the other shoulder began it's looooong run of constant dislocations. He would have it come out, duct tape it and go race moto two. No injections or Doc Bonard back then. He was detemined to not quit!! He had 3 surgeries on that shoulder and numerous treatments to shrink ligaments and tighten it. Nothing worked until he found someone to do the same surgery as done on the other one....bolt it into place!!!!

Robbie also had ACL tears...his 1st time having one tear was at Pontiac. He was told he hyper-extended it. He raced the rest of SX with it and had an MRI and found out his ACL was gone. He decided to race the outdoors without it. He did well, but with 2 races left in the season he crashed and tore the other one. He went home and told the doctor to fix them both. He said we will do one now and one in 6 weeks...Robbie said I don't have 6 weeks. They BOTH need to be done now. 8 hours of surgery he had both knees repaired at the same time. He rehabed and came back in 6 weeks...way too fast as we all know, but Robbie wanted to be back on the bike doing what he loved. YOUNG and stupid...YES!!!!

In Jan 1996, Robbie rode a local AX race to warm up for the season opener the following weekend in Orlando. He crashed hard in the whoop section while leading and dislocated his shoulder and was taken to the hospital on a back board. They cleared him of any spinal injuries and sent him home. He raced the SX opener and complained of a stiff sore neck. The following Monday went to the doctor to have an MRI done and found out he broke his C-2 vert in his neck. (and the c-spine he had at the ER the week before showed it but they missed it!) This was Robbie's worst injury ever! He was in a neck brace and isolated to little movement for the next 12 weeks. I am sooooo glad I was away at college during that time! Once released he rehabed hard, bulked up with lots of muscle to strengthen everything around his neck. He looked like a football player to me. At 18, he didn't know how to train and he was following what some pro's were telling him to do. It didn't work for Robbie. He later learned!

Robbie's injuries continue, with a shattered leg in Minneapolis with just dabbing it on the ground landing on a jump. The doctore wanted to amputate it, but instead he spent a week in the hosptial for compartment syndrome. A broken arm at High Point, a dislocated wrist during practice, another dislocated wrist, broken bones in hand and shredded ligaments in AX this year, and a broken hand at Washogual. He just tore his ACL in his good knee (the other knee has been without one for many yrs) and he had it repaired today. His artrthis it worse then most 70-80 year old men, but I can tell you he loves this sport more than anything!!! And you will continue to see Robbie throw a leg over a bike and race. I was thrilled to see him race this year at LL's and win.

His injury list is long...his race wins as an amateur and pro is what I wish people could remember. His generous spirit and his determination is what I am most proud of. Robbie never quit. He didn't want a big retirement send off last year..(I tried talking him into it..he doesn't like the attention)...even though I knew watching him race Steelcity would be the LAST pro race I saw him race. I have picture of his last lap as #17 and as a Pro. I was emotional. He has moved on in his life and is happy. He is a track owner, holding mx schools, trainer and good friend to many riders (amateur and pro), and will always be a racer!!! If you are ever in the Oklahoma area and need a place to ride...go check out Robbie's track. www.reynardraceway.com You never know who you will see there, but you can bet there is a Reynard out there working his butt off! STAY TUNED FOR SOMETHING EXCITING COMING TO HIS TRACK NEXT MONTH ON OCT 22-23 FOR HIS FINAL ROUND OF HIS FALL SERIES!!!!!

Yep, I am a very proud sister and wish you could all know him and have seen him race the way I did. It was something special! Sorry for the length I am always long winded. I only went through the injuries because I don't think people realized what he overcame...what he went through. Most would of quit long, long ago, but NOT Robbie!!

Thank you for the kind comments and I told him to go check this post out...lots of great video while he recoops from his surgery today! Get well Bro and I love you!!!!! You have to admit you have the BEST sister ever!!!!!!!!

Lots of inaccuracies there...gives the impression Windham proved to Everts he was better and waxed him after Everts calling them out...

Few facts...

No1 Everts was the World Champion...not European.
No2 The season was over in the US
No 3 Everts won the first moto, Windham won moto two... they tied on points.. Kevin did not dominate the race.. Everts beat him the next weekend in Brazil at the MXDN.

RRsis - good point about how much practice and effort it takes to ride like Robbie .. thats why I like watching Pourcel, Everts, Reynard, Windham, Ramon... it is so hard to ride that fast that perfectly...

Thank you all for posting the video's and stories. RR is a true legend of the sport.

A couple of questions:

Did RR race RC much when they were amateurs on 60's, 80's and 125's?

I am a big fan of an Australian legend called Craig Anderson (Chad Reed's cousin, who raced in the US a couple of seasons in 03, 04). He was/is extremely talented, with a stand up style, much like RR. Am I right in saying that he beat both RC and RR at Loretta Lynns in 1992? Does anyone remember this or was there?

To whom it may concern, including all European crybabies concerning Stefan Everts...

MX4evr simply quoted what Wipedia spells out... read it...

It says that K.W. ..."dominated it" I remember the results the same way... sorry... The U.S. wasn't even there in Brazil at the MXDN... No comparison to topic...

Question is Damon Huffman 1994 US west supercross champion/ factory Kawasaki and factory Suzuki rider. Over RR. plain and simple Huffman.
The same Damon Huffman that came to Canada on the Blackfoot team for two solid seasons. And JSR ( the King ) defeated him both years on the same bikes. They even let Damon ride the 450 and JSR was on the two stroke 250.
Same result JSR champion.
If JSR had that US factory ride he would have been the first Canadian to win a AMA championship after RC hung it up.

Your out of your mind! No way would have JSR won a AMA championship. He was fast up North and saw him beat Dowd a couple times. But when he was here at the Nationals he wasn't even close to Dowd. BTW Dowd and Reynard won races as Privateers, how many did JSR win????

AMA 125 West Supercross Championship in 1996 and 1997,
2005 Motocross des Nations team championship
2nd in points for the 2008 supercross season.
1999 winner of the United States Grand Prix of Motocross held at Budd's Creek, MD

Don't count KW so short.

You really are Nutty. Thought you said you were leaving this topic? This thread was never about RR is better than so and so and hopefully it doesn't get sideways with JSR is better than so and so. Take your hijack and please start a new thread about JSR shoulda coulda woulda because your analogies don't even register. If not please send a large quantity of whatever you are smokin down here so everyone else can relate.

No, they were seperated by age by a few years and never raced in the same classes at the amateur level.

Am I right in saying that he (Anderson) beat both RC and RR at Loretta Lynns in 1992? Does anyone remember this or was there?

Hattica might be able to clarify this, but I'm 99% certain Robbie raced the Schoolboy classes in 1992 and won 6 of 6 motos (stk and mod). Matter of fact, in one of the Schoolboy motos, RR crashed BIG in the first corner. Asshole over bellybutton, you could say. It was gnarly he even got up after it. He dropped the hammer and took off after the pack (that was by now half track ahead of him). A lap later he had the lead and was running away with it. He won by well over a minute. A month later he was in Acapulco Mexico rubbing elbows and "trading paint" with Jeff Matiasavech at the 1st and only Acapulco SX by Fox and damn near won it had Matiasavech not used RR for a berm every chance he got.....and if RR had weighed more than 120 lbs.

Still waiting for that full story to get written.

The legend of Robbie Reynard (and lest we forget Robert, Liz, and Cherie too) will live on in the moto community like that of Doug Henry, McGrath, RC, Everts, Windham, Bradshaw, Lechien, Bailey, and many many more great examples of personalities and legends that makes this sport great.

Stewart will be back, bank on that. Huffman was never the same after he broke his femur in the US. I rode for Blackfoot in '04 when Huffman was up there and Huffy was pretty much on pace with JSR but to me could have cared less about racing. That was his last year racing I think. Comparing the '03-'04 Huffman to the 90s Huffman is not accurate at all.

Anyway, Reynard is bad ass. No doubt. Carmichael had his crashes just youtube it, but somehow he stayed alive and won a hell of a lot of titles. It's just the way it goes... Look at Ezra Lusk stats and see how many SX titles and wins might have been subtracted from McGrath if not for injuries/crashes for Ezra... but it is what it is.

JSR winning in the US, no way...

Oh yea, Stewart will be back.

MX4evr simply quoted what Wipedia spells out... read it...

It says that K.W. ..."dominated it" I remember the results the same way... sorry... The U.S. wasn't even there in Brazil at the MXDN... No comparison to topic...

BMan-
Pretty sure the USA did contest the MXDN in Brazil, think it was Carmichael's first race on Team USA.

It was RC's second MXoN, as he raced in the mud at Foxhills the year before. In Brazil, he maybe made two laps before having his bike crushed after crashes in both motos...

He did a little better when he moved up to a 250.

I love this picture.....very fitting.
Reynard is a bad ass plain and simple, anyone that can't see that isn't looking at reality.

That photo is taken at the famed Motorcycle Raceways on 59th and Douglas in OKC.

I remember John emailing it to me after he'd taken it.

And Cherie, very good post.

**AND FOR ALL OF YOU REYNARD SUPPORTERS...

RRSis, The memory I have of Robbie is not of his injuries, even though they were many and tragic to his career. One day at Unadilla ( I forget the year ) I saw Robbie ride a motorcyle like I've never seen anyone else ride. He was using lines no one else thought of or couldn't get to, seemingly never hitting a bump. As the other guys worked their way around the track Robbie was going twice their speed and looking like he was on pavement. It was awesome.
There are two other rides I put in this class in my mind. One was the Ronnie Lechien ride at Southwick the day after he flew in from a Prom and didn't practice and absolutely demolished them in the first moto. I don't think he made the call for the second moto. The other was a Bradshaw ride also at Southwick, where Damon worked over Stanton who was so dominant at the time. His aggression and speed that day were unreal.
These three rides are all vivid in my mind to this day, more impressive to me than any RC, Stewart or MC ride I've seen, and that's saying a lot.

Post a reply to: How good was Robbie Reynard...
