I've basically given up on all of the medical care in the US. Its a sad state really.
What's it all come down to? Money, of course. The $$ come from owning the tech, not doing the procedure.
Anyone remember that Dr. that was annihilated by his peers for suggesting that ulcers were caused by bacteria and could be cured with a simple anti-biotic? Glaxo went ballistic thinking of how much Zantac sales they would lose (was once biggest selling prescrip in the world)...
On the treatment side, this isn't one of the treatments that would have been restricted from government spending...I get that.
Is there another reason they aren't doing this in the US? Is it because the way experimental treatments are handled in the US (very restrictive)?
That's not an issue even on the table for current research. And if I'm reading Matt's post correctly they're going to use adult stem cells from his own body, so it's clearly not an issue.

Just to clear a couple things real quick.
There is tons of misconception when it comes to stem cells and research, especially in the US. There has never been a ban on stem cell research in the US. There has been issues with bans and federal funding. Not the actual research, just who pays for it. And no, people aren't just getting pregnant, having an abortion and using the cells. It doesn't work that way. There are hundreds of thousands of abortions every year in the US alone, and all the cells are tossed out. Why not use them for something useful? But, yet the religious right in this country has its own issues with reading comprehension skills.
To be honest though, I don't really care about fetal cell research. It has shown tons of promise, but far from anything viable in the near future. Adult stem cells have shown to be easier to work with and less side affects, chance of tumor risk etc.
The procedure I am having is adult cells. My own cells from my own bone marrow.
The bottom line is pretty simple though. If anyone really thinks there is a "cure all" coming for spinal cord injury, cancer or any other disease really, I envy your ability to look at the bright side of life, but you're rather naive on how the world really works and who runs things.
