I think this was the first motocross race in history held in triple-digit heat!
We were there from 0900 until the 450 podium speeches. It was hot. We were going back to the pickup between motos and running the AC. Saw lots of people stroking out but that was mostly due to alcohol consumption and lack of any kind of well being to begin with 😂
Definitely not the first time in triple digits...I've been to Hangtown where it has happened several times...
I was at Troy in '97. Yesterday was toasty but far from unbearable.
I went to a Carlsbad GP with 45 minute motos that topped a 100 and that track is around 7-8 miles off the coast so most likely the humidity was higher than yesterdays race. Mike Bells head was flopping side to side … brutal to race in those kind of temps.
I think the biggest danger is when it’s warm and high humidity.

It was somewhere between 105 to 110 and was dangerously hot. Not just the riders, there was a big concern for the fans also.
JuJu said it wasn't that bad 🤔
It was crazy hot but was surprised they cut motos. Also hats off to the guys walking around 8am with a warm draft beer no tee and no sun cover.
Yep, I remember that Kenny.
Who would have guessed that a Dutch dentist honed on sand tracks would dominate there on the hard packed adobe concrete like surface in brutal heat 🥵 FIVE TIMES! 😲
OP obviously never experienced the Swan MX track in Tyler Texas.
It was 106•
You could clearly see the heat Tomac was coping with after moto 1. Being one of the fittest dudes in the sport, it speaks volumes how hot it was. Deegan had the same issue after moto 2. I'd rather have AMA taking measures then having major incidents like we had in the past (Josh Lichtle unfortunately comes to mind..RIP)
I wish riders were allowed to rehydrate with an IV in between motos. It would really help the rider and it would be more safe.
Yep. You can buy them for $20/liter or less, so it’s not like it has to be super cost-prohibitive for any of the riders.
I get that back in the day they raced longer motos and probably equally hot and humid weather, but if you can improve rider safety without having to change the on track part of the race, it seems silly not to.
I don't know but....it gets hot as hell .... at redbud at times...selling wet washcloths for $10....rite out the cooler...
I remember being there as a kid every year. Not only was it hot but it was humid too! Sticky lol
So why can't we have a national in TX?
I think AMA banned it because its able to mask drugs in a system. Even with that being said it wouldn't be hard for AMA to approve IV bags to use and distribute them to riders at the nationals.
weston pieck making fun of the race-shortening on IG..........
Pit Row
thought the same thing. hell, it was in the 80s just a few weeks ago here. It's smoking hot right now but no hotter than the race this wknd...
It was the hottest Hangtown I can ever recall and I have been to most of them in the last 30 years. We have had some pretty good weather recently. A couple hot ones, some really nice weather, even some light rain a few years ago.
Our seats this year got coverage from one of the VIP awnings by 1pm, so I loaned our 3 umbrellas to some tweakers down in front of us (one of which was wearing a long sleeve black Raiders jersey, 🤔). I specifically said, you can "borrow" these. 1 moto later they wandered off. Needless to say I am never seeing those $5 Home Depot umbrellas again, lol
Dude lives in lake Havasu. If it gets below 118 there, the locals start wearing windbreakers. 😄
As someone that lived in MN for a time I remember when reports came out that Vikings coaches called Korey Stringer soft before he died of heat stroke.
I hope he gets the attention and relevancy that he's craving.
That's a carryover from the USADA no needles policy. I believe it's supposed to be 24 hours leading up to a competition
Who is going to administer the IV for the guys that can't afford to bring a nurse?
Hot take for someone’s whose overall career average outdoors was 16th
Westins a bad dude, but for the people that complain about shortening mud races, and in this case, hot races, they need to get with the times
Safety should be a priority, and is it life changing to remove some time off of a race?
Las Vegas '85. Between motos the factory riders got to go back to a box van and a lawn chair, maybe some Gatorade under the umbrella.
I agree its different today than it was when they made that rule. I have a friend who has an IV rehydration business and they have a setup that they take to outdoor music festivals all summer around the country and they do over 1000 IV's everyday they are there. All the AMA would have to do is hire a company like theirs, set up spot/tent in the pits for the riders and team members to go to for IV's. The IV rehydration business is growing quickly and I'm starting to see them pop up all over here in FL
They should b at every round. Think about the tracks with multiple days of amateur racing at the nationals. Millville & Red Bud they get to the track wed practice Thursday race Fri & Sunday. Red Bud has Fri & sat night racing + Fri, Sunday pro track. Friday it’s always the toughest track of the series . No iv s is a old stupid rule. One could leave & get a iv from a local clinic. Plus fans in the heat not everyone can handle it . I Love the extreme humidity & heat I hit the track all day on the hottest days.
Lots of people missing my sarcasm in the OP. I've raced in plenty of crazy-hot races myself, including in Africa and insane east coast humidity.
It's no secret that people these days are used to AC all the time. I remember pictures back in the day of riders at hot races and all they had was a baby pool and maybe some cold towels. No cooling vests, indoor cooling centers and motor homes between motos. I know it was brutally hot, but the coverage got a little ridiculous.
