Some of you will say "Yeah, no sh*t, dude", but aside from the top 5 or so guys, I never think of these athletes making a ton of money... and certainly not what they deserve given the risks involved. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that at least some make more than I expected when listening to the latest Dean Wilson episode on Gypsy.
Around 55:35 (on Spotify), he said that he was fortunate to have his mom keep him pretty disciplined with his money starting at an early age. He said that since around 2010, he's been putting around $13,000 a month into an account. Assuming that it's some sort of IRA or 401K yielding an average of 8% interest for the last 15 years, that's almost $4.55 million in one account. That's on top of his investment properties and other assets that I presume he has. No bad for a dude that's only 33 years old, albeit he risked his life and body to get it.
He absolutely wasn't trying to brag about any of it, and I wish more riders were more open to talking about. I think it could actually improve negotiating leverage for a lot of riders if there was a better understanding of who is getting paid what, but that's maybe a conversation for another thread.
I know Vital is 50/50 on Gypsy, but it's a great interview and worth listening. I mean, how can you not like DW15?
He had the skill to get it too, that is what most of us lack, not the brains.
Deano has to be one of the raddest dude in this sport. was a contender for so long, then ala Forkner, kid couldn't stay healthy to save his life. So he accepts this, takes the deals that come to him and makes a helluva career out of things.Wish him nothing but the best.

He deserves it, I can never forget him being impaled in the ass at that SX race, was it Indy? can't remember exactly which, but he had like 12 feet of bandage in that wound when they removed it as well. Ouch!!! Glad he got paid well

I'm glad to see he had a nice career financially. I was heartbroken when he got up at Seattle 2012 holding his shoulder. I always wondered how the Jeff Ward Racing deal would've gone if that team didn't fold. How much factory support was he going to get?

Do you think that riders are very hesitant to speak on how much $$$ they made/make due to being judged in a somewhat negative or jealous way by the motocross community and even fellow racers?
The thing with this sport, is a lot of the top tier riders, especially ones that came from nothing, aren’t much different personality wise than us C class warriors and those guys in the LCQ’s.
Look at RV for example. Dude just wants to have fun and drink a beer.
However I think some of them feel awkward and maybe almost ashamed (not that they should, they earned that money) when talking about making boatloads of money, knowing that a lot of their fans, and fellow racers, are middle class folks paying bills.
Anyways, I love Deano and am glad he’s made some solid bread in his career. He deserves it.

Love it when I hear about these riders being smart with their money. Larry Ward, the guy in my avatar, was smart with his, and all these years later the last I heard, he was doing pretty good for himself.

Years ago then we were all up in Canada at a race in Calgary, Matt Goerke told me and Dean that we sounded like a coupl’a dudes form California…it was funny. But, looking back on that now? It’s even funnier.
DeanO, Kenny and Chad are 3 racers that I’ve noticed their accents kinda come and go when they travel back home. I think it’s pretty cool. I’m also kinda stoked for the guys that come here and get an opportunity to speak their native tongue with friends and competitors…like seeing Tom speaking French with David and Marvin. That’s gotta be nice when they’re far from home and missing it.
So according to math, since he has been 18 he has had $156,000 dollars a year extra to invest after taxes, agents, injuries, training, every year? What is that 250k after taxes? Maybe, math is hard but even a cool million a year contract doesn't go far when you factor in two coast living, trainers, girlfriends, health insurance, agents, lawyers, practice mechanics, dad's "help", sprinter vans, and hangers on. I call bravo sierra, he probably invested that much some years... but not every year. He's done OK, I hope, but not to that extant. Otherwise why is he racing still with his alledged crippled unwalkable knees. It's one or the other maybe, but not likely, did he make it rich, or is he still struggling to keep going to earn a living in athletics with crippling injuries? What or why was a former AMA champ racing British arenacross this year with shitty knees if he is so wealthy? Is it somewhere between, I hope for him.
Accents are cool! A friend of mine, born and raised in Connecticut, lived in Lake Tahoe, Ca. for 16 years and lost almost all of her east coast accent. Until she went home for two weeks and came back to Ca. with a Conn. accent. There's three guys I ride with, one from Tennessee, one New York, one New Zealand, and me from west US. It's funny to listen to our four accents all together.

Good for DeanO!! Him, the family he’s started, his parents and sister have probably all benefited from DeanO for the sacrifice they’ve made for him. He was a factory guy for probably 90% of his racing career and since he was smart he won’t have to worry about shit.

Deano has over a million subscribers on IG and YouTube. He probably makes that much a year on social media alone. Add in his early career success and it’s really not hard to believe he can invest that much yearly.
He’s got some properties on the FL gulf and a very busy landscaping-contracting business. The dude stays crazy busy. He’d started all this before he was finished racing for Monster in Canada.
Good for him, I met him at a house party at my friends in like 2011 in menifee before he, he was neighbors with them by Heritage High school, he was super cool. Told me some stories about JLaw hitting a bong in between motos in the YOT rig in ‘07 and then going out and starting 11th and finishing 11th and JLaw telling him it was a consistent ass moto 🤣🤣🤣
Over the last 30 years, a good friend of mine has lived in Japan, Virginia, Southern California and South Texas, but he still sounds like South Philly.
