Man, Duffe mentioned they are running tall gearing, 3.79 actually. That 250f is cranking out so much damn power and torque it is basically a 450. That gearing is stupid, long gear ratio in the tranny and that thing is easy to ride lol

I'd be curious to see ratios of the other top 250 riders with factory transmissions. I'm thinking a lot of it has to do with just the speeds they're carrying around the track compared to your average consumer, along with the engine mods of course.

None of the final drive ratios work out that way playing around with, the closest being 14-52 at 3.71. I bet he's talking about the primary

53/14 rounds to 3.79.    Not really particularly tall.   Final drive ratios don't really mean much if you don't know the internal ratios.  Also, these guys are using 1st gear in SX at times.

That’s what I am interested in. Duffe mentioned they had more oomf and compression to give for Denver and the internal ratios would make the bike a dream to ride

The factory teams have been playing with primary gear ratios for decades and it's been a good secret because nobody can see them. A slight change in the crank (pinion) and clutch (spur) gear brings everything up as long as you have the power to pull it. I believe it's why MCs bike sounded so different in the 90s compared to every other CR250 on the track. Anybody got the clutch basket out of their YZ250f?

Got to go work but anybody notice the drone shots of the starts? Even if a privateer gets a good jump, by the shift the factory bikes just walk them...every body has an ECU and motor work

Back a few years ago I helped out a WC SX rider a bit and he said the amount of work done by factories on 250's was insane. He retired but was going to the 450's, which he raced outdoors, And said it was cheaper as he needed 20-30k to get his 250 up to speed from stock. Including engine suspension etc.

Piston, piston pin, rod, crank, valves, entire transmission…. I suspect there’s quite a bit that they don’t want anyone to see.

On the other hand, most of these parts are very refined already.  I have to wonder how much of it would be visible to a normal human, at least without having both parts side by side…

That wouldn’t surprise me to be honest. Tommy searle did a video the other week with 999 laser (a decent club level rider) and they compared lap times from a stock triumph 250 to tommys race bike ( some work done to it but no where near as trick as star). Both of their lap times were about 3 seconds quicker on a short track on the race bike than the stock.

I’ve read that some of the Cosworth MX2 engines overseas were upwards of $60k

I stopped by the booth at Indy about 15 years ago and they had a bunch of YZ250f stuff (when they were still carbureted) and they wanted 3500 for DLC coated shim buckets, I can believe it!

Is it just me or do the Star bikes seem like they run a longer swingarm? Their bikes seem long. Rear tire seems just past the rear fender.

Dan Reardon said his Gieco 250f was quicker than a stock Honda 450...

Makes you wonder what's inside the crankcase? Not that we were allowed to know following Loretta's 😉

His rear wheel is adjusted as far back as the chain adjusters allow...

It looks like other teams have extended adjustment further...

So OEM keep making the bike turn quicker and more agile while teams are beefing up and extending swing arms. Interesting

It’s more for putting power to the ground and achieving traction rather than handling.

There have been some really slow stock 450s over the years. 2008 YZ450f comes to mind, also Hondas from like 09-2016.

Power to the ground and traction via extension of swing arm will affect handling. Majorly. Everyone knows kick the axle out in the sand and on tight courses you can move it in and run the forks higher.

I haven’t dug into the difference in the swing arms they are running from previous models vs the new one and flex characteristics ext. love the little details.

I ran Hondas in 12 because they were the lightest bikes by far. But man, that stock exhaust and ECU killed those things. Super choked up off the floor

I thought I read somewhere they ran the chain adjuster out for gearing. It might have been here on vital. It’s been a couple years though.
