So my current rides are both 2019 YZ450FX's, I race hare scrambles and just fun ride all around the country. My original FX has been from Utah to West Virginia. My only gripe is the suspension is too stiff for the rocks and roots I'm racing on now. Fun riding or anything out west it's perfect. I bought a low hour roller last year for parts and it was so nice I ended up buying an engine from Australia to make a second bike. My wife said my race bike is getting older and gave me a green light to replace it, but I'm kinda in a weird spot I've never been in before. Other than the suspension, and occasional slow starting, I don't really have any complaints with my bike. It's engine is all original, even the clutch and timing chain. It's been bullet proof more than any other bike I've ever owned. I kinda want to try a new gen 450, or maybe another 2 stroke, but then I see the prices and I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. Maybe I'm just getting old, I would have never hesitated to get a new bike before ๐. Any words of advice from other middle age riders, should I keep the same bike or bite the bullet and "upgrade"?
Here's a travel photo from before I had an enclosed trailer.

You always need and deserve a new bike.
You only needed the titleโฆthe long paragraph was waste of your time..
As mentioned above, The answer is always Yes..
Iโm pretty sure itโs a well known fact that nobody ever gets to old age and says:
โMan I wish Iโd just bought less new bikesโ
Your family is already disappointed. Buy the bike.

This made me laughโฆbought new bikes for my son and I last week. My wife couldnโt be more disappointed..
If I add the whole fleet I have 6 motorcycles currently ๐ .
Thinking pretty hard about it, but modern 4-strokes are pretty had to beat on reliability, performance, and ease of operation. Mixing fuel for my waverunner gets old sometimes.
I went from a 19 250fx to a 25 250fx. Chassis is much improved but the suspension is moto stiff from factory now.
My wife told me to buy a new bike for my son back in March because he destroyed his CRF50 clone bike at a race. I straightened the swingarm back up and welded it, reassembled the bike, and told him to test ride it. Came back 15 minutes later crying and pushing the bike carrying a foot peg in one hand. The swingarm was fine but he had ripped the shock apart and broke the foot peg bar. My wife said get him a new bike, so he's got a new crf110.
I'll go against the grain here and say that it's not the end of the world to keep what you have, if you are happy. If you were having any doubts about your current machine, that would be a different story. I'm currently in a similar situation where I get the urge to get something new, just for the sake of something new (also, I'm somewhat conditioned to do it.) But my main bike is dialed and somewhat fresh, so I just want to enjoy it. Also, I don't want to start over with set-up and mods. It all comes down to your situation but I think we are programmed to "need" a new bike. I've gotten to the point where I want to enjoy a bike. It's annoying to mod and set up a bike just to sell it. But to be fair I have a few bikes (and a lot of bicycles that I ride) so I don't pile hours on my MX bikes. If you do, then I'd lean more on a new one. Just wanted to give another vet rider perspective. Good luck.
Get a new bike, even if you piss somebody off in your family. They will still be pissed off but youโll have a new racin scooter!
Buy the new bike and sell me your lower hour FX.
I had a couple 2019 YZ450FX models a few years ago, put 260 trouble free hours on one, 230 or so on the other . Fantastic bikes. I would prefer it to my newer green bikes...
I only went green just because the FX was a little cramped, but I see that I can now get the works connection peg lowering brackets.
. I am hoping to find a nice lightly used one because the Yamahas in my area command top dollar .... and the kawis are nearly free
Iโve reported this as inappropriate contentโฆ๐

Ive never owned a yz250x but I cant see there being to much discrepency between the 450fx and 250x in terms of reliability and performance.. I'd love to ride one with the hitlis, apex xc head, and a fww. I'd throw a hydro clutch on it and get suspension done and I'd like to imagine that would be a pretty manageable/ easy to operate setup.

There's a couple of people with electric bikes in my hare scramble series. We do 2 hour races, so far I don't think any of them have made the full race, one guy even had a spare battery $$$.
Have you considered trying a 250FX?
Done with 250f's, you spend way too much time trying to get more power from them. 450's you detune a bit with the power tuner app and rock on with stock everything. I also prefer the wide ratio 5 speed vs a close ratio 6 speed.
No!
You should get two new bikes.
Yes, Get a new bike. It's good for the idustry and economy. also new bike day is awsome.
