How many of you guys have foregone buying a Yamaha because of Deegan?

I have.  A couple of years ago, I was looking to replace my R1M with something a little less intense (creaking old MX bones and sport bikes don't get along well), leaning towards an MT-10 SP. After the LL debacle in 2022,  I vowed to never purchase another Yamaha product ever again.  I ended up purchasing a Kawasaki H2 SX SE instead. The incident also made me a lifetime "rat-faced boy" hater, regardless of how fast he is or how many championships he wins. The fact that he was booed when he clinched the championship last night makes me think that a lot of people agree with me.  My Deegan complaints:

1) Felt like he had to cheat at LL, even the he was the odds on favorite to win. Winning an LL championship when you have a factory ride all lined up won't be much of a milestone in his career and isn't worth cheating over.

2) Deegan's, Star Yamaha's, and the AMA's treatment of Brennan Schofield was disgusting.   They negotiated a deal, then immediately reneged on it.  To cap it all off, they unnecessarily had sponsorships by a Yamaha dealer pulled.  If this isn't asshole behavior, I don't know what is.

3) Unnecessarily aggressive riding.

4) Says dumb shit like "I was the first American" finisher.

5) Sticking out his tongue while simultaneously throwing devil horns on the podium.  What a dork.

Congrats. Your righteousness is noted

Not only that, but did Hannah take out a teammate? I can't recall.

Don’t know, I was born in 87 so I was not around when he was at his peak, and I have not watched that much of AMA 70/80’s racing to point out what exactly he did over his whole career or not.

Just that it’s obvious that we live in different times today and what happened 50 years ago might not be used as a measurement for today’s standards.

Yes, Bob would talk smack…yes Bob would say,”When the gate drops, they’re no longer my friends.” And Bob brought it to a lot of people on the race track…ask Kent.

And another thing…when you’re racing for a 5-6 digit race bonus…or a 6-7 digit title bonus…

When did we become a sport of such whiney little shits that forgot how this sport works?

The dusty old Bob Hannah argument that people often want to bring to the table is using a example of a time that now is close to 50 years old.The sport worked in a way back in the days and now works in a different way.

In the 60’s the riders were smoking on the gate and drank beer between the motos, but those days are long gone, just like other things that was a standard in the past.

With the massive TV crowd numbers now days comes larger sponsors in to the sport, with those sponsors comes a great amount of money for the riders but along with that comes responsibility.

A responsibility to act professional, both in work ethic and in behavior. To act clean and represent your sponsors and employer in a good way.

That’s just the evolution of a professional sport, and it’s a small price to pay when you look at the money they earn and life they live compared to how the riders had it back in the 60-80’s.

Are we going to discuss the "massive" crowd of empty seats in Denver vs. the common two night sell outs of the 70's while we're at it?  Because this sport, while now televised, is a mere shell of what it was in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.  Fewer participants, fewer spectators, fewer tracks.  Look at the farce the "World" championship has become, where it's more important to hold up a 3rd world country for money than it is to actually pay the participants.  Throw in our motorcycle equivalent of the WWE, SUPERmotoCross, and you can see how the Deegan personality has become important.

Yep, society has certainly evolved.  And it hasn't been good for this sport.

I have been following the sport since before they even had a 250 sx title (125 back then). I have seen a lot of "next big things" come and go without leaving much of a stamp in the moto history books. Damon Bradshaw and Mike Alessi are good examples.

Holy cow, if those guys had social media back then they would have been just as irritating as Deegan.

I doubt Deegan will get away with his "hang it all out" riding style once he is on a 450 and in a deeper field with seasoned riders.

If he gets a few injuries along the way and more young talent comes along I would expect a team to lose patience a lot faster than someone like AC that never did really meet the expectations a lot had, but kept a ride because he was a good ambassador for the brand.

There are a lot of riders that were really hyped up after a 250 sx title that either took a long time,or never had anywhere near the same success on the big bikes.

People forget how good Plessinger was on a 250. Even Webb had a couple years that did not live up to expectations. Shane McElrath was a 250 sx title threat.

And let's not forget Eli Tomac, and how brutally fast he was when he moved up. it took him 4 years before he won a 450 MX title, and an unbelievable 8 years before he won a 450 SX title.

I am not wishing misfortune or injuries on him, but if Deegan experiences some of the same struggles adapting as some of the riders mentioned above had it will be interesting to see how he handles it.

I am betting it will not be pretty.

Oh the memories.

I remember well, Falta and the outright criminal gang of ChayZed riders wreaking havoc.

And, ask Brad Lackey about borderline criminal acts by other riders, and the fans hanging over the fences.

1978 LA Col. is the best one from 70's I can remember.

1986 Anaheim  is one to ad to your play list too.

1990 Seattle is another one of my favs, only because I was there that night.  After Larry won - the crowd reception was great.

I'm genuinely curious if any other factory team would be interested in hiring Deegan given the opportunity? Is his transition to the 450 class with Star Yamaha? (I'm assuming so?).

I know last night was a bit over the top, but it makes you wonder, does a team want to hire a rider who gets boo'd for winning and telling the crowd to suck it? Or are they looking a little further down the road and waiting for someone like Davies to hire?

I guess my question is, does his current image and attitude help or hurt his chances to be hired?

I know a lot of people think what he did last night was nothing short of tasteless. But looking at the big picture the moto demographic think what he did is “cool”. Bobby and star prob want to puke but see the money he generates. And at the end of the day it’s all about the money. I think he’s fine like him or not the majority of these fans do favor him.

The only thing Bobby would puke from is all the Champagne flowing.

Hopefully he gave Cole an earful of his normal Bobby ribbing's for leaving the door open like that.

I have seen 86 RJ vs DB plenty of times, and some random races. I’m heavily in to vintage racing and builds now days so I have seen more old races than most of my age. But I would never stick out my neck and claim that I know something about racers I never followed up closely.

But I will fresh up my memories on the other two races you mentioned.

The move itself was not the most egregious thing ever. If that’s against Jo, Juju, Shock, etc I think it’s fine to a majority of people. The fact that he did it against his own teammate, who he was clearly faster than at that point, then tells the crowd to suck it…like come on fellas. You seriously think that’s acceptable?

Shit, even if he goes “yeah I got a little bit aggressive there and forced the issue a bit early, my bad”. That would’ve been totally cool. Instead he (at least to me) knew he did something questionable and then proceeded to be very immature about it on live TV.

Some might like that, I personally do not. Makes it hard to root for a guy.

Motocross is a contact sport. Always has been.

Nobody will remember his response to those that booed him. They will remember he won a title.

You weak asses want to hate on him, boo him, discredit his wins, and on and on. Then when he claps back you act offended. Grow up.

Who’s more offended? The people that think Deegan acts like a douche or you being offended other people are offended. You spend so much time here arguing with people over their opinions of Deegan. Let it go bud. Ask yourself when was the last time someone with as much talent as Deegan pissed off so many fans. You really think people are just looking to hate him or just maybe he brings it on himself.

There might have been more people in the stands back in the days, hell here in Sweden all the races would be packed by public back in the 60’s.

But I still think that the races goes out to a larger public now days with tv, streaming and then allt the people that goes out on off-roadvideos.org the day after the race to watch it.

The GP’s is not a measurement how the sport is doing as a whole, it’s just a indicator of a poorly ran race unfortunately.

Look at all the feeder classes that race with the GP classes and you get a different picture.

All evolution is not for the better, I can agree on that. But people can never convince me that talking shit and racing dirty is better than acting humble and racing clean no matter who acted like a duche 50 years ago and took his competition out.

I love seeing Jett race Eli and Sexton knowing that neither of them will try to take the other rider out and just go for clean racing and speed.

uh no. But saying "I hear ya out there and hate that he went down - absolutely not what I intended...." woulda shut the whole stadium up. Instead he says "Suck it" and sticks his tongue out. You tell me which would be the wiser choice.

My thoughts exactly. He could’ve handled it so much better and it would’ve been just as easy.

Jesus man, you can't be this immature. Unless you're a teenager, then all your posts and Deegan fanboyism makes so much sense. Yes, the professional racer is supposed to take the boos. Its part of the job. Millions cheer you and millions boo you. You dont tell the crowd to suck it on TV

For him to push back and tell them to suck it. There was nothing wrong with his pass, and there was no need to pander to the sea of boos to appease their frustration.

Had Deegan said that he didn't intend to let it go down that way, they would have still booed him because with many of the haters, Haiden is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Seems like his formula for antics is to be more outspoken when winning and to trend more towards sportsmanship when losing. It also seems like he has a good sense of when he can get away with throwing fuel on the fire and when he should play it cool. Most 250 champs go on to sit in that p3-10 place when they move up, and if he is one of those i doubt he’ll stoke as much controversy. If he’s battling for wins I’m sure he’ll pop off, since he seems to mostly run his mouth if his results are backing it up.

Imo the move on Davies looked like Cole was used to riding close to him at the test track and thought Deegan would give him an inch to stay wide. I wouldnt be at all surprised if Davies moves on and decides that, as someone well served by nonchalant focus, a physical rivalry and trading blows is more trouble than its worth. Especially with a guy like Deegan who thrives when he can get riders caught up putting mental energy towards distraction that he grew up thriving in

Yep- it was his moment in the spotlight of this championship to say whatever the hell he wanted while holding that #1 plate. He earned it!
