I think Herlings will race for an other manufacturer in 2026 or retire.

Motocrosser Herlings has doubts about his future at KTM: 'The love has to be mutual'

Jeffrey Herlings no longer on the orange KTM he is so familiar with in 2026? That is a possibility. "I'm not saying it will happen and I'm not saying it won't happen, but it could very well be that I'll be riding somewhere else next year."

The five-time world champion's contract with the Austrian motocross brand expires this season. The 30-year-old Dutchman would prefer to finish his career at KTM, where he has been riding since 2009.

"But I can't deny that things aren't going well with KTM. I don't know if it's possible to keep me from a financial point of view. We may have to look further, because the love has to be mutual."

When asked, Herlings speculates about his own future in Oldebroek, where he participated in the second race of the Dutch Masters, the open Dutch championship, on Saturday.

Upward trend
It was the first time in a long time that motocross fans saw Herlings back in action on Dutch soil. In October last year, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee, which kept him out of action for almost half a year.

Herlings had announced in advance in Oldebroek that a place in the top three would be "a super day". He succeeded. Herlings came second behind Frenchman Romain Febvre, who is second in the world title fight. It was his first podium finish this season.

He had not been close to that since his comeback at the Grand Prix of Sardinia on 6 April. Not even close. Fifteenth (Sardinia), ninth (Trentino) and seventh (Switzerland), results that do not seem to fit the stature of the 107-time GP winner, but which do not surprise him.

"I've only been doing this for five weeks and I'm really still getting back on track. You can see that in my results. I only trained five times for my first GP. But there's an upward trend," says Herlings, who mainly saw the race in Oldebroek as a training.

"If you skipped an entire winter, didn't test and couldn't prepare, it's hard to suddenly be behind the starting gate again after six months."

His right knee is starting to feel better and better. "Sometimes I'm still a bit scared when I have to put my leg on the ground in a corner, but that's normal, I think."

Herlings is mainly focusing on the second half of the season. He doesn't want to think about his sixth world title (his third in the MXGP), let alone the record of ten titles of the Belgian Stefan Everts.

"I'm not going to get that anymore. The world title is definitely not in the cards this season, since I didn't ride the first three GPs. Hopefully I can book some more victories in the second half of the season and improve my own record."

Pieces of the puzzle
And with that he may be able to extend his contract with KTM or force a switch to another brand. "Contracts are often only concluded in the second half of the season."

Herlings understands that KTM has two talented riders in house with his compatriot and reigning MX2 world champion Kay de Wolf (20) and with the Belgian Lucas Coenen (18), who became the youngest grand prix winner in the MXGP in Switzerland last week. "Where they can also continue. We'll see how the pieces of the puzzle fall into place."

For now it's mainly a matter of "building up and getting better every week". Herlings also deliberately rides more calmly. "Unfortunately, I've visited the hospital too often, and then you don't take the risks you used to. When you're 18, you think very differently than when you're over thirty."

I could be wrong but i think lucas coenon is taking over at ktm now. I believe thats the reason he moved up to the 450 so early.

How about Fantic.
It could be an all dutch team.
Maybe Louis Vosters goes big for 2 seasons with Herlings.

That would be awesome!

On the other hand, I rather see him 1/2 years on Ducati.
Further development of the bike, aiming for top 5 in the Championship and win some more GP's.

I think retirement looks like the most viable option for him. To me it looks like Herlings doesn't have the passion to ride at highest level anymore and he's jus fulfilling his contract

I believe Herlings has been told KTM will not be renewing his current contract and that’s why we read this in the press now. With Coenen and de Wolf KTM can have riders for the future.

Rumours are strong that Louis Vosters is making moves to aquire Herlings. Yamaha could also make sense as they really need a contender in both MXGP and MX2. Rumor is that Everts might go there next season as he is out of contract after 2025.

KTM underpays their own youth riders, that is why Jorge Prado ran. Herlings started making money when HRC offered him 2million and KTM countered that bid with 1.7/1.8 million. Before he was in the same shitty place.

Indeed it is very low. Kay De Wolf earns from hearsay 50k without bonuses. Riders are risking their lives for peanuts. But same is going on at motogp it seems.

That is mind boggling to me if true, GP guys were making more 40 years ago.

You're not going to tell me that guys like De Wolf are riding for 50k base salary...

With Herlings being out at KTM, I can see a few things happening. If I look objectively, his options being able to pay him are: Yamaha, Ducati, Fantic, Husqvarna. Honda (Gajser) and Kawasaki (Febvre) are locked in. I don't see Triumph going after him in their first MXGP Season.

Yamaha needs a Championship rider. Renaux is capable, but injuries..

Ducati aims high, but it would mean that they have to let go Guadagini, Seewer should be locked in for two seasons

Fantic. Louis Vosters is known for having the capital to run a team with multiple high calibre riders. His goal is to win a World Championship, so he would definitely go after Herlings.

Husqvarna. Team owner of Nestaan, Kay Hennekens is a private sponsor of Herlings as well. Herlings and de Wolf both riding for Nestaan Husqvarna would be awesome

Saying Herlings is out at KTM sounds like a statement. What’s the situation, Herlings thinks he’s still worth €1m a year (figure I just plucked out of thin air) but KTM don’t think he’s worth that or they just have no money?

Gajser contract at Honda is up. He said it many times himself, also said some months ago in one instagram history he don't know if is staying. I could see him wanting to try something different, but also when he is riding so good this year, is difficult to imagine going away

My bad, it sounds like he is out at KTM. I think it depends a bit what Gajser and Coenen brothers will do. The financial situation at KTM is not the best obviously. Herlings his base salary should be quite high, not sure if they're still willing to pay for that.

I can see Herlings on a Fantic for Vosters. The bike is already pretty dialled in looking at what Glenn and Andrea are doing on it. Plus the Dutch connection and sponsors. And Herlings could stay with Red Bull.

Husky would be an interesting one. But also possible.

So combined their base salaries are let's say $120k.

Here's where I'm throwing out a no way Jose.

I in a million years can't see Mirts doing all that work for such low salaries.

So combined their base salaries are let's say $120k.

Here's where I'm throwing out a no way Jose.

"Mirtl doing all the work", this is something that really needs to get straighten out. The Coenens and Lucas Mirtl have/had a weird simp, adoration, glorifying relationship with Mirtl because he made big bucks for his riders in the USA and they had or still have IDK, IDC the American dream. He was the same the other way around what is normal he saw potential US Clients for his portfolio with value. But the guy who works and made the deals for the Coenens but also for a ton of other riders such as the French Valin, Benistan, ... is done by Jeremy Debize for Wasserman. A agent who doesn't try to be a celeb between the celebs, like some others.

Now you can ask yourself a few question why Mirtl, keeps in touch with the Coenens, even if they are not and never has been his clients. I also think to remember that in one of the case files Wasserman asked to stay away from the office and their (his former) clients. Luckily the Coenens where never his clients so maybe he can get away with this as a technicality. Also getting yourself allot in the same picture with someone isn't "doing the work".

We've off Course have that other piece of information that we can be looking at. Despite earning huge dough according to many, they got or needed a loan from Mirtl. One he gave directly from the account of his clients Jett & Hunter Lawrence and the "Lawrences Donuts".

Right, that's what i to tell for a long time but nobody really listen. I spoke with Jeremy Debize at Saint Jean about the whole situation. An he confirmed to me he's in charge of the bros. I guess he should know.

This is also the case here, they rather believe their own stories build on Instagram pictures, instead of taking notice of the few people who sometimes take their time to spill some beans.

You guys are being a bit sensitive. The only ones I've seen claim Mirtl still represents the brothers are Mirtl, Cooksey and UpTite.

I have a hard time believing anyone would break their agency agreement and sign on with an independent Mirtl, but this is motocross and I've seen worse business decisions. lol

Would have to buy Coenen's contract first i guess, he's contracted till 26'. With Fernandez out and Zanchi presumably out too, they could accomodate both Coenen's given Lucas could be alongside Tim and Sacha be alongside Valerio but as of now, that is quite a stretch ...

KTM underpays their own youth riders, that is why Jorge Prado ran. Herlings started making money when HRC offered him 2million and KTM countered that bid with 1.7/1.8 million. Before he was in the same shitty place.

I'm guessing the so-called facts in this post are untrue. (I don't  know for sure). If so, this person should be suspended for posting,  perhaps permanently...

I would say hes not far off of what he says. I have spoken to a few team managers over there that have told me KTM doesn't pay anyone well (number thrown out was between 25K and 75K for de Wolf before his championship). Herlings and Prado were a bit different obviously.

Thanks for backing my story.

Italian media are reporting today that Wilvo will likely run the Ducati MXGP team in 2026. Gajser was previously rumored to be joining Ducati, but now with Wilvo entering the conversation, there are people saying that Wilvo could run the factory Ducati team with Seewer and Herlings. This has led to speculation that Gajser might now be leaning towards Yamaha instead. Interesting summer coming
