March 31st the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) submitted the 2025 National Trade Estimate (NTE) to President Trump and Congress.

https://ustr.gov/about/policy-offices/press-office/press-releases/2025/march/ustr-releases-2025-national-trade-estimate-report

In it you can find everything about tariffs, trade barriers and so on. For instance Vietnam applies average 12% tariff, EU 5%.

April 2nd Trump presents his big boards to the world, with left column entitled "Tariffs charged to the USA including currency manipulation and trade barriers". Vietnam is listed as charging 90% tariff, EU at 39% and so on.

One hour later the calculation is deciphered by randos on twitter, surprise surprise, it has nothing to do with tariffs.

April 3rd USTR recognizes that these so-called tariffs were indeed calculated only based on trade deficit, which explains why they're 5 to 20 times higher than the real tariffs applied by most countries. Tariffs are not taken into account in the formula used to calculate tariffs presented by Trump and used as a justification to raise insanely high so-called "discounted reciprocal tariffs".

https://ustr.gov/issue-areas/reciprocal-tariff-calculations

Trump and US government keep doubling down on claims about foreign countries, "worst offenders" raping, abusing, ripping off the US for too long while they know their numbers don't show anything of the sort since they're just about trade deficit. Which means US buys more from Vietnam than Vietnam buys from US. They can't explain what's wrong with that nor why imposing tariffs on the very modest Vietnam exports to US could help balance the trade (meaning 100M Vietnamese with an average salary of $600 could now somehow buy more US products like $150 trainers or $40k American cars)

Now ask yourself, how many people believe Vietnam applies 90% tariff to rip off the US VS how many people know Vietnam applies 12% tariff?

How many people believe EU rips off the US VS how many people know EU applies very moderate tariffs (between 1 and 5%) and that US make more money tariffing the EU than the other way round?

So out of the 57 countries listed, there is not one country that charges the US a tariff?

Trump said tariffs on Mexico and Canada were related Fentanyl. Is that a lie?

Wow, you guys are so smart all of the sudden. I’ll have to go back and see how many possible lies you caught the previous administration in.

I wonder if the national debt figures are all a lie also?

I answered your question, feel free to point out any inaccuracies in my post.

Most countries do apply tariffs, like the US do, you can go through the whole country list in the USTR report, it's all there. And yes some countries do not apply tariff to the US, like Australia, but they're still advertised as imposing 10% tariff so are slapped a so-called "reciprocal" tariff of 10%. What is there to negotiate with them I don't know.

TLDR

The "tariffs imposed on the USA" presented on "liberation day" are about 10 times higher than the real tariffs as presented by the US government 2 days before. The justification for the so-called "discounted reciprocal tariffs" is based on numbers that have nothing to do with tariffs imposed by hostile countries. This is the propaganda you are being fed to accept rising prices, tanking stocks and more taxes.

If Biden (or Kamala) was re elected what was their plan in dealing with other Russia and Ukraine?

Why? The Original Topic was about a political action - Tariffs. Why didn’t you report the Original Topic as “political”?

The purpose of these tariffs was to help bring revenue to the US. There are posters that have talked for and against it. Some of those that have talked against it, have relayed that the current administration is an enemy to the US and his plan is destroying the US. I asked what was a viable plan, and if he wasn’t in the presidency, what would the other candidates have proposed? They’ve also mentioned Russia, and I inquired what the other candidate’s plan was for dealing with Russia.

Actually, it hasn't been as bad as I thought. Usually by now the thread would have gone much further off the rails and be shut down.

I am also into drag racing, and was over on a popular drag racing site and they were far worse than the mxers on here. There were a large group of guys going after every Canadian member on the board saying things like we are tired of Canadian's leaching off the US, cheating the US, calling them drug peddlers and pedophiles, and saying that the US military will be coming after them soon to kick their ass.  Crazy but real.  This whole new reality of unhinged people deranged by propaganda and lies is escalating fast and needs to be addressed.

I agree to a point. I haven’t noticed any posters on here going after Canada. Maybe I haven’t read enough.

And Burn1986, the whole infiltration of Fentanyl from Canada to the US amounts to 1%, and while that 1% is still too high, Mexico is the culprit with 95% or something close to that, coming in from those borders. Just another fact getting in the way of another story being bandied about by Trump. The real facts are out there for all to see about these tariffs and the effects are on fast forward-hold on cause it's going to get bumpy. I'm thankful for the protests I am beginning to see as US citizens are now waking up to the reality of their government. Canadians and Americans are like peanut butter and jelly, and I believe our close ties will recover, but as was said earlier in this thread, tearing down is a fuck of a lot easier than building up. It takes a village to raise a barn but one knucklehead with a match to burn it down-it takes zero intelligence to tear shit down.

So nothing should’ve been done anywhere?

I guess the “word” was that fentanyl manufacturing was greatly aided in Canada in conjunction with Mexican criminal organizations before crossing the southern border. Looks like the Mexican president is making strides unlike Trudeau did in Canada.

It amazes me that you feel that any action to keep this drug outside the country is wrong, and you feel Mexico has acted completely reproach-free in its dealings with the US.

Again, what would be the appropriate response? Would the other presidential candidate (Harris) have handled this better? What was her stated plan?

Does it matter? So I guess Mexico’s current policies are more valuable to US without any changes? I mean, they were completely honorable in all of their dealings with the US? There was no need to even question Mexico since they have been such a wonderful neighbor! It’s funny how you guys will go to the point of defending every other country then the US. Mexico. I don’t know. It sounds like we’re dealing with Russia a little different since there’s a bigger threat there. The Russia Ukraine thing could easily draw us into a war (which the previous Dementia administration let happen. So freakin irritating that they just let Russia do whatever they wanted to Ukraine. Neither Harris or Biden literally gave a f-ck. Neither did any of those other wimpy-ss countries. EU/NATO? What a joke).

So many here are focused on tariffs and they are ignoring the bigger picture.  Tariffs are just a piece of the plan to re-industrialize the American economy (Trump's goal).  Deregulation, shrinking the size of government, tax cuts etc. are part of the deal. All pro growth, all private sector and consumer oriented,  If you think the road the U.S was on before 2025 was getting you ahead you are strongly mistaken.  Additionally this county 's policy's DROVE business out of this country (read EPA and taxation/regulation). This county IMPORTS way to much Capital, Industrial and Consumer goods (mostly from Mexico, Canada and China) and that screws the American worker, our economic health and national security. Not only that many countries will not take our goods and in the case of China they are stealing our goods.  China is a thief to intellectual property that we lose billions to every year. I remember years ago where China was the U.S.A.s "Most Favored Trading Nation.  Whomever coined that phrase and bought into it screwed this country. The fact that countries that will not lower their tariffs shows that those countries want to destroy our industries. So we either take back our industrial base or we let other counties hold us hostage.  Strong economies equate to strong countries. Again, look at the big picture.

1) eliminate tariffs and let capitalism work like it’s supposed to.

2) guns and fentanyl are both inanimate objects that cannot inflict harm.

This stuff isn’t hard.

We complain about the EPA but don't talk about rivers catching on fire, our dilapidated railways causing entire towns to be evacuated after crashes, fracking causing earthquakes and polluted water tables. Our infrastructure is nowhere close to being up to the task of today's manufacturing demands we have outsourced. An infrastructure investment must happen first before we just tax ourselves into forced self-sufficiency. Bringing back a roaring industrial era is more like a 20-30 year plan.

The rest is complete hogwash and you continue to post trumps claimed tariff rates which have already been discredited and proven as false. Tax cut??...  You are getting hit with the biggest tax increase in the US in a long time.. you pay these crazy new tariffs!  Stop posting propaganda! We are also the fastest improving state in the nation going from the bottom 10% to the upper 50% according to NAEP scores. According to NAEP we were 2% above the national average in math and 1% above in reading for 4th grade. We aren’t where we want to be yet, but trending in the right direction.
