I just had my right knee done on Jan 3, a TKA.  My recovery has been horrible...  I'm 5 weeks in and cant get past 75deg flexion.  The pain is fucking unreal.  Doctor is now talking about putting me under again and "breaking the knee loose".  I'll be back to just like I was immediately after surgery and starting all over.  My knee wouldn't move...  And still doesn't.  Very reputable surgeon done at Mayo Clinic.

It's so frustrating, this is my 4th knee surgery and all of the others, I recovered in record time.  Not this time.

That sucks, keep fighting💪

Not the first time I've heard this story, which is a big part of why I keep putting mine off.  Sorry to hear Press that sucks. Good luck hope you can start making progress soon.

How’s the swelling? Are you taking the meds so you can do a good PT session? Did they take post surgery pics?

In Phoenix they are doing knee replacement by cutting to the inside(medial) instead of over the knee cap.  Better recovery,  less ligament and soft tissue injury.

Here's my before and after. I'm 4 weeks out today from replacement surgery. They had to cut and scrape a lot of arthitic bone out. They also removed some hardware and had to do bone graft to replace bone that was removed. The first 2 weeks were gnarly. There were a few nights where the pain was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Like a lot of us, I've had many injuries but this takes the cake on pain. My rehab has gone well and I was walking without the walker within a week or so. I actually have more range of motion now than I did before the surgery but it's been painful getting there. I do rehab twice a week at the PT place, and do things at home everyday. I'm still experiencing pain throughout multiple areas of my knee, leg, and hip and there have been multiple times I have questioned whether I did the right thing, but everyone tells me it does get better. IMG 2545.jpg?VersionId=C3XA260Hj6RzSVIMG 2544.jpg?VersionId=czjL2a1KazsNVA 87EU6e3DU4HO Each day does seem to get a little better, it's just a long process and as someone who doesn't like to sit around it's been a struggle.

How old are you? Do you plan on riding again? Thanks …keep working!  I have had both knees reconstructed for ACL & meniscus damages, I”m sure the TKR is more painful but the first few weeks are brutal….

I'm 47, it's not the years, it's the mileage as Indy said. I definitely plan to keep riding. I'm probably more obsessed with riding now and than I was 25 years ago. I've had ACL and meniscus both done previously, and TKR is way more painful for the first few weeks.  But at the 1 month mark for me, it seems less painful than the ACL reconstruction and meniscus surgeries. I hope to be riding by the 3 month mark.

Thats what I want to hear! No doubt I’m not done riding after I eventually get it done. How bad was your knee before the TKR? Were you still riding, Mtn Biking, limping while walking? I don’t think I am quite there yet, but some days it hurts and some no so bad…. I just had Gel shots a few months back, had them last year also.

Swelling is actually pretty low.  Full on narcotics, still taking them.  Pain hasn’t changed.  Dr just rescheduled me for Monday.

Here are my before and after xrays from last May.  I jacked up my knee in Vietnam in 1969.  Never had anything done, just gutted it out.  Around 1978, I jacked it up again racing.  Again in 1982.  That time was at Red Bud at the Trans USA.  Got it manipulated out by a doc.  No surgery required.  Just locked up often.  In 2012 I had meniscus surgery and the doc told me TKR was next.  I hid from him for a long time. Finally last year I broke down and said ok, do it.  After the surgery he told me I had two ACL tears that were really old and had healed themselves.  I remember when that was. Did the PT and I went through the two weeks of hell that everyone talks about.  Got to 122 degrees and graduated from PT.  No real pain from the knee, but now I'm really feeling pain from the broken foot I got in 1984.  I haven't ridden in about two years and look forward to getting back on my bike in a couple of weeks.  I'm only 77 so I should be good.  LOL

My knee was shot. Doc said I was way overdo. I've done gel shots, cortisone, etc for years. It was finally time to get it done. For the last few years I've had a really hard time sleeping because of the arthritis pain so it was really effecting my overall life. I walked with a bad limp. I was still riding dirt bikes a lot, mountain biking, going to the gym, and snowboarding but I paid for it. My knee hurt 24/7 for probably the last 5 years I just dealt with it because I felt I was too young for a replacement.

Thanks… I”m not that bad yet, but 5 days of walking around Key West didn’t help it….finally had to rent a scooter…. All the drinking didn’t help much either😂… it’s weird, bicycling and riding seem to make it feel better …if I don’t do anything it gets more painful…

Post 1.5yrs TKR, 61 yrs, slowSmile started riding arpund e months out, no expectations just wanted to ride, knee was fine but leg was patheticly week, hamstrings etc... finding the peg was sort of a hassle. Kept riding not pushing just taking what the day would allow. Now fully good to go, hitting jumps i have not hit before due to protecting the bad knee and knew the swelling would hurt for the ne t week or two. Now, no swelling or pain while riding moto or MTB.  Is it perfect...no, Im limited at 110 on my own, can get to 115 after loosing it up, crossing my leg like figure r, gives so.e pain on the inside, thi k its mostley muscle tightness. Been doing PT regularly and started yoga. 100% happy i did it.

I had to do a 2 surgeries to get the TKR. This is after years of surgery’s trying to save what was left.  I am now 9 weeks out.  Getting to almost 0 and 140 degrees.  But the knee feels so much better and more stable.  The surgeon used the Stryker Robot which I think helps.  I was surprised some surgeons are still manually cutting and fitting.  Problems now are getting my quadricep muscles firing again.  But it’s getting there.  1 3IMG 9372 1.jpeg?VersionId=UIMG 1014.jpeg?VersionId=NfGe o QZ1CpbYTx.vYsCbMIMG 9312 0.jpeg?VersionId=Y45ihgTgraUY8nx

Weirdest thing post replacement.  I was riding the Peloton, and stopped to ask my spouse if she has worked on the bike and lubed it all up. She of course had not.    Pedaling with the new knee was just so shockingly smooth, I didn’t even realize the extent of the bones grinding before the surgery.  Hard to describe, but so much happier now with it done.

Do your guys wobble around ? And does a replacement tighten it up ? Mine moves around quite a bit, I feel it the most when I'm swimming or bodysurfing, it kind of clunks and knocks. Doc said no acl, mcl, or meniscus. It still works "good enough" although it is getting worse. Good luck Bad10 let us know what they say / recommend. Here's a couple videos that show the movement. Your guys move around too correct ? Curious to know if the guys who've had replacements had theirs tighten up after surgery.

Yes. Pre surgery I could not pivot on my left leg without it popping.  Now it is so much more solid.  And getting better with exercise.

Guy I was doing rehab with was having the same issue. They did the manual manipulation under sedation and he was up to 120 degrees the next week. Hoping the best for you.  It may not be a bad idea to get an second opinion before you go.

I just got home from Gen Helen. I had my right done in 2018, I was just turning 61. Get as good a doc as you can. Someone that does athletes and is a knee specialist. What is actually most important is your physical therapist and making sure they know your goals. Most people in the medical field will have a knee jerk reaction to moto and say no more. My surgeon said go ahead, he could repair anything. My PT is a sports based clinic. He has worked with the US Olympic team gymnastics, LA Dodgers, UCLA, MLS and so on. He also did some rehab with the Mace brothers that were racing nationals. I told him I wanted to ride again and he didn't even flinch. Most other PT places just look at someone in their 60s and figure being able to get up off the shitter is good enough. He said he would rehab me like I was going back to work as a fireman. I'm fortunate in that I didn't have any excruciating pain. I was on a walker in few days, hobbling around the pool at two weeks and hammering rehab in 3. I was back on the bike in a little over 3 months, I've taken some direct hits to the knee crashing and didn't hurt any worse than if I landed my other knee.

When life outside of moto is miserable, you'll be ready for TKR. That's what made me decide and I should have done it a year earlier.

As always YMMV.

None of the above and it still snaps pops and aches on rainy cold days.

Back surgery is July 1st so hopefully can start getting back in shape for riding again
