Dungey still the last one to successfully defend an SX title

The tomac fandom has always been weird to me, he has great rides and is fun to watch but as far as championship wins and mental strength he is far behind the elite champions. Dungey beat him 3 straight years before retiring who in turn had been beaten by villopoto 4 straight years but somehow Tomac would beat Villo? Tomac has lost sx titles to Webb, Sexton, Lawrence and even Jason Anderson not to mention mx titles to ferrandis and Osborne.
He has 7 national titles from 26 attempts that’s a 26.9% strike rate in comparison Villo won 9 from 15 equaling 59.4% and Dunge won 8 from 19 at 42.1%.
He is exciting to watch but let’s not re-write history too much, remember all the Elito Mac threads? How many times did we see Villo or Dungey floundering around outside the top 5?

Yup and no matter what Eli does at this point, he’ll always be below Dunge on the all time list for me because of the head to head. Both have astronomical amounts of wins and titles, but the one time they went against eachother, the Diesel came out on top. And as amazing as those 5 motos were in 2015 MX, who won the title that year? Kinda like Mahomes and Brady

And Dunge still has 8 titles to Eli's 6, retiring at 27yrs old while Eli is still going at 32

Mc, RV and RD were way better than their competitors at the time and won titles back to back. Jett is extremely fast but he because of injuries has not been able to successfully defend a 450 title. Since RD we have had Anderson, Webb, Tomac, Webb, Tomac, Sexton  and Jett none of these guys have been able to step up and dominate therefore we have the most past champions on the starting line today.

Something about that math just bothered me. Still does to be honest.

In 2017, Dungey won three races.
Tomac won nine races.

Dungey took the title by 5 points.

Tomac had two races where he was completely mental and blew away the championship.  2017 SX was one, and there was a lites SX where he was points leader but Damon Bradshaw'd the Vegas race and Roczen took the title.

2013 MX, RV has him covered.

Go back and look and I’m sure you’ll see that RV actually had more bad races than you remember. RV started as RC was winding down. RC dominated because he did the whole program. ET arrived as RV was leaving and by then everyone was doing the whole program. Throw in some epic years by Dunge, some weirdo things for ET at Kawi and you don’t have as many championships. He did 3 in a row in 450MX and 2 SX titles. He’s been robbed of atleast 2-3 more.  Some of you guys don’t give enough credit to the dude and fawn over RV in a weaker field. In 2013 Tomac had a  faster  lap than RV on his Geico Honda. I was a huge RV fan when he raced too.

Edited to say he also did this as probably one of the worst starting elite riders of all time. Has anyone passed more riders to win?

Yes.

I feel this is what's made him more popular now than those 2 ever were. What's not to love about a humble rural kid with all the talent in the world gradually piecing it together as his career progresses. With adversity, confusion and ultimately triumph. His story is far more interesting than RV or Dungey, but they were certainly more solid wire to wire. He even said on Gypsy (paraphrasing) that he just didn't have that self belief week in week out that he could be the guy and it impacted him mentally.

The amount of shit that gets thrown at Dungey because he doesn't ride like wreckers or checkers is so weird. The guy is a class act, got his ride by writing a hand written letter to Decoster then plucked from the B class. Has put his head down his whole career and rose to the top. Then comes back after retiring and holds his own against the new crop of hotshots.

But, son of mountain bike legend from rural Colorado is more interesting? Weird.....

IMO that's a little off.... and I'm a huge fan of all three.

Dungey was one of two to have an unobtanium boot deal with nike,  a mainstream target deal, and was on a wheaties box.   We might not see those things again.

I'm a big Dungey fan and always rooted for him against Villopoto, but I will say Tomac is more interesting just from a riding standpoint. Watching him in Beast Mode is one of the coolest things in our sport's history IMO.

Dungey had incredible rides but his style just wasn't as exciting to watch

Personal taste I guess. Career wise and riding style I think Tomac is more captivating. Dungey I would say still has a stronger supercross legacy, but just nowhere near as exciting. It's very interesting to me how a guy with Tomacs talent didn't win a supercross title until 27.

I don't care about mainstream shit really. The way the fans in the stadium have roared for Tomac in these yamaha years is something else. And from a social media perspective the amount of Tomac love is overwhelming. He's the guy

Huge Dungey fan here.

I've always considered him to be the Universal Speed Limit in moto. Guys could be faster than him at times, but their longevity was inversely proportional to the amount of speed difference.

In other words, if you beat him by a minute and a half, you've got approximately 5 motos left in your season.

Can't say it enough that I'm a big eli fan, especially what he's doing now after a major injury.

He didn't win earlier because Dungey was the man in 15' 16' winning the most races enroute to two in a row....17' eli was on fire but had terrible races too which cost him.

Man I’ve thought many times over the years about how awesome the racing would’ve been in 12, 13 and 14 if dungey would’ve had a better supercross bike like the 2015 model. Not saying anything would’ve changed with who won the titlles, but I personally believe it would’ve been an epic battle of the Ryan’s.

Actually the record books do count them, just go to the ama's supercross record book page # 120 & 121, sorry.

Of course the regional SX championships are recorded and tracked, but when counting National Championships they are simply not included in the tally. You're just wrong on this one.
