He better stay in the industry, you don t get hangers and a** kissers working in the fire dept. He s been spoiled, and working as public safety is a whole new world! Shift work , people that don t appreciate your line of work, Dangerous line of work. But if thats what he wants good luck to him. He s gonna be coming to a reality check.

being a Fireman is a great job, good pay and benefits Congratulations to Ping on his new Career..
Good pay and benefits? Like I said, its not as good of a job as most people think. But if you love it, it is worth it. I didnt love because of the hours mainly. I didnt like going 24 hours without seeing my wife and kids(which is more like 36 because when I got home, the kids were gone to school and then I am waking up when they are getting home). But, I have friends that I went to fireschool with that are still diehards.

If I were Ping I would do the same thing. Face it, the guy raced motocross professionally. Traveled around in the industry making great friends. So to do what he wants to do now, considering his past, makes perfect sense. Industry jobs are probably great for a while, but probably aren't as cracked up as they seem to be, judging by articles and interviews I've read or listened to. If he doesn't like it, I'm sure he's got enough connections in the industry to line him back out with some work.

Does anyone have any idea if he is going to continue with his "Ask Ping" column?

Great move. It is a great career and you can still go to the races. He is a good guy and I am sure it will be great for his family.

Awesome! Probably will also keep his gig with RacerX as well and continue to be an Industry Insider.

Good luck to him. Can fully understand wanting a stable career.

Is he going to continue writing for RX?

Ping has a young family and he wants to sound more time with them. He's also got a great gig lined up that he's been working towards for years. We are sly really stoked for him. And yes, he's going to keep writing for Racer X and Racer X Online.

I just hope he and BT101 or William Hahn or one of his other guys gets a win before he takes his leave from the team, they have all worked really hard for it.

Excellent pay and benefits out here in California. Lifetime medical for you and your spouse and some are retiring with 100% pay. My dad was a paramedic for 25 years. Becoming a firefighter/paramedic in California today is almost impossible. Good job Ping, you are going to love it.

Ping has star quality. I predict we will see him on a few upcoming episodes of Jersey Shore, where he will be known as "the incident".

14 days a month. Good pay. Bennies. Every station here is short handed, cause of budget cuts, so extra days where you make even more money is the norm.

I never said it was a bad job being a officer , emt or fireman is a great career, i have friends in that line of work and i am also, guess my point being is that he is used to getting free stuff all the time and and some people can t get used to working shift work holidays, alota weekends, shift work has caused alota of divorces That line of work is very admirable, Trust me i dont know his salary or his personal business, Being a fireman or police officer is dangerous, benefits and retirement are a plus, but i m sure he has a sweet gig at TLD.

I don't think people understand, there isn't a lot of money and "benefits" from working in the industry. It is kind of like riding as a privateer, your there for the passion not to get rich.

I am sure he will still have all the free swag and stay in touch with all his industry friends. I am sure he isn't turning his back on the sport.

Believe it or not, I don't think working some weekends and holidays is going to be a big deal for a guy that has been to a minimum of 16 SX races and a handfull of outdoor MX's when he has a family and two kids at home. Getting on that plane to go to another race sucks after years of doing it.

Industry guys are salary guys, I bet if you take salaries and divide it by actual hours worked it is PEANUTS per hour, There is no such thing as overtime, time and a half or double time or holiday pay.
Been there and done that....you'd be surprised how much money time with your family is worth after traversing the industry and traveling for years....I walked away and love the time I'm getting with my daughters right now....priceless. Good for him.

I walked away from a nice little TV gig after Vance was born a few years back and have not regretted it one bit... Except when I call someone by their wrong name for two hours.

The line is very long and at one time you had to be from a certain demographic to meet the city quota (to put it politely).

Sounds like Ping already has one of the best things about being an emt/firefighter. He has the second/part time job. I know quite a few firefighters and almost all of them have a side gig.

This is the best comment in this thread!!
Shoot they probably recruited him, have you ever met a fireman that likes to lose?
It is my understanding that affirmative action is legally dead and that the fire industry is all about who you know.... Sound familiar? a team manager job in moto is a true 24/7 babysitting gig, I'm sure he'll adjust just fine to working less hours. Whoever said it is a dangerous job... come on, sure he's a team manager now but he still rides and may even have the time to race again now.
Congratulations Ping.
